Because she is singing about a feeling of a memory she has and she is sad because she doesn't know why she has that feeling and memory.

It’s also emotional because of the real story of Anastasia, where she was murdered with her family in 1918. She was only seventeen, and never got to live her life.

Derek is so freaking good looking. And he nailed this role.

So wonderful! It was a whiplash to see Matt Lauer introduce it before his career took a swan dive off of the Empire State Building, certain never to be resurrected.

I saw this on Broadway and I loved it it made me cry

I love this has the transformation to the pretty dress. She is amazing!

This was one of the last good Musicals they had at the parade. I am just heart broken I never got to see the play in real life ( or any part than this online ) before they close.

I’ve seen a high school production of this musical with a friend of mine, and it was so wonderful, they did a great job.

at least they did the costume change. On the tour version, she doesn't even change at all! But yeah, i'm with you on the pink. it looks good on her and maybe they were trying to give a nod to the color she wore as a child but for fans of the movie who obsessed over the gold dress the pink is a bit of a a letdown.

I finally saw a piece of this musical! They sing great, but the choice of costumes confuses me. It was necessary to dress them so stereotypically, otherwise they would not understand who it was? At the balls, at that time, the high society did not wear such kokoshniks, there were hairstyles. And the men were in military uniforms or suits, but not in fur hats and caftans. The only way to justify this is that they wanted to depict one of the last balls of the royal family, which was costumed and they really wore such costumes there))

It's a run through her memory. Not that she was at a specific ball. But it's a musical piece so they're all dancing and singing.

If these are memories, then she will remember what was her environment, but the peasants in kokoshniks were not this environment. Otherwise it can be justified by a memory from the masquerade ball. 🤷‍♀️ Yes, you can say that I’m nitpicking, but after such interpretations, those who don’t understand think that bears roam the streets in some countries, other people eat dogs, etc. 🙃 By the way, in the cartoon itself, in Anastasia's memoirs, people in outfits appropriate for that time were dancing. ​@@ANGELBRIGHTLIVE That's what I thought - the outfits were different in the movie, so after reading your first comment, I figured "Those red uniforms and the white one on Nicholas II must have been the period-appropriate ones, then...". Not to mention I doubt everybody was wearing white, there had to have been several colors like in the movie.

@@DeltaSilver88 Yes, the colors of the military uniform of that time were completely different. I'm guessing that the costume designers of this musical decided that since the action in the song takes place in December, and December is the snowy month, so they made all the outfits white for the picture.

It has to be with the lighting, at the play all the cast look like ghosts. Here they used the costumes of the play with sunlight

И в приюте её назвали Аней, поэтому большую часть фильма (в том числе в представленном отрывке) её называли так. Под конец, когда все выяснили, что она и впрямь Анастасия, её так и стали звать Анастасией. Никто её Аней уже не называл

Anya/Anna is the name they gave her at the orphanage when she lost her memory. They didn’t know her name was Anastasia.
