The property was theirs to sell and keep whatever portion they desired, but they decided to lie to the Holy Spirit about it. If they didn't even sell and give any of their property they would still be fine. God hates lies.

After listening to a sermon on Acts 5. There are a lot of different interpretations. Some say they're not believers or Christians. Others say they denounced their faith. My takeaway is Ananias and Sapphira were being a hypocrite. They desire/pretend to look more mature than they actually are. Ananias envies Barnabas who sold his land and gave away the money to the church. Instead of asking God for a generous heart, he instead craved the applause of men and sought glory for himself. This was a reminder for me that we're sinner, we need a savior and grace. Thank you, Jesus!

The point is the lie. They could have said we are giving 90% percent and it would have been fine. I think the lie here is also pride. They wanted people to believe they gave everything when in fact they had not.

If you didn’t fear the Lord before you should after hearing this story. And this might just be the smallest demonstration of his great power

Just read it in the scripture before & after watching this. It's a very clear but scary message.

Let's be clear: The issue wasn't that they kept some of the money. The issue was they LIED to Holy Spirit who knows all things. Unfortunately, they didn't know or understand that they were under NO OBLIGATION to give. None. All they had to do was propose in their hearts to give what they freely and joyously wanted to give, give that amount and be blessed. Instead, they lied.

I read someone’s comment who seems like they really understand this scenario. That if Ananias and Sapphira got away with their deed it would show that 1) Dishonesty is profitable 2) People would think you could truly deceive God.

Oh Lord, forgive us and increase our faith. We all deserve what Ananias and Sapphira received. Lord, this was a fearful thing to watch the words of Acts 5.

"Ananias & Sapphira sell a piece of property, as the others had done. They show up and they lay an amount of money at the apostles’ feet minus what they had kept back for themselves. The sin is not that they didn’t give everything. In fact, they weren’t commanded to give anything. God didn’t command them to sell their house, sell their land. The selling was voluntary.

Even today if you cannot don’t commit, just ask God to help you do what you want, don’t ever say I will, but rather say according to your will.
