Why does my face look wide you might say? Its a couple things... First, I'm using an 85mm lens here. Usually I use a 18mm or 35mm prime. So lens compression is doing it's thing. Secondly, the anamorphic adapter I used (Sankor 16 essentially) has high distortion. Things in the middle are wider than the edges when close to camera (in my case, about 5 feet). Just take a look at the computer in the background. Looks thinner than usual. So if you're going to use this lens, you might want to reduce the stretch to correct objects close to camera. Just keep in mind your edges (like the computer in the background of my set) will get very thin.

Caleb, there is good and bad stuff (you generally have great quality). The bad thing is, which you would now if you were part of the group, is that the anamorphic store is a complete rip-off. Also people don't trust vid-atlantic, they have cost some people there scopes by breaking. Best way to as for now is rapido in terms of price/value. Slr magic is simple, but lacks in quality. Better to get the rapido.

The squeeze ratio changes when doing the so called "double focusing". I can imagine that you didn't use your variable diopter. And even if you did: some scopes have not exactly 2x squeeze ratios. Also a lot of smaller anamorphic projection lenses tend to compress more at the sides. Another fact why the computer is looking thinner is not only the the slight overcompression caused by your scope but also the fact that vertical "oval" bokeh makes everything out of focus seem more thin. That's also one of many many reasons why it's preferred by professional DoP's if you look at it from a artistic view. You really rushed this video for no reason since there are some misinformations and also a bad promotion to a person who is selling really bad products for ridiculously high prices on Ebay. Instead of promoting him you could have promote Rectilux from the UK. Also as I mentioned somewhere else: You should have joined the FaceBook-Group "Anamorphic Shooters" and dig through the posts there and eventually come in contact with some really talented and informative people who would have loved to help you out with gear and product recommendations. Next time don't let anyone push you to do anything. Do your research properly and bring stuff out when you are ready for it. You are doing such a great job otherwise but this is a step into the wrong direction by trying to put out content as fast as possible (not saying that you didn't invest time into this one, it just wasn't enough specifically regarding this topic).

Just a point: you can shoot 2x anamorphic just fine on 16:9 sensors. You simply use the 4:3 area at the center of those sensors by cropping or zooming. In turn you loose a bit of resolution. Many cameras, like the BM Ursa Mini are like that.

Caleb! This video is killer! I dove down the anamorphic rabbit hole about 3-6 months ago and basically came to the conclusion that it was just too complex for the little bits of pay-off I got. This video would be super handy to someone like me a few months ago who is just trying to get the hang of why someone cares about anamorphic and how a basic set up might look. You've got me tempted by those SLR Magic adaptors haha. Thanks again for all the time and effort you put into this channel!

I've been following you for years now, I love how you condensed so much information well and into one single video to get people up and running. One thing that I think you missed, and I could be wrong, is that if you've learned a lot from Tito's videos then it would have been appropriate to give his channel a shout-out. The man has put so much energy into what he does and with your pull, it would have been placed well. Maybe I'm wrong but if not, maybe show some support for everything he's helped with. Love your channel regardless and I'm always sharing it with younger videographers just getting into the game.

Once I got past the flares and the distortion of your face, it's the tonality that this old lens brings that I really liked, even more than the bokeh/blur and the flares. I've heard cinematographers say that different lenses today are like what using different film stock was like, and I really like the character of the tonality that this lens brings to the image.

This is so great. PLEASE do a video where you build out one of the Kowa or Isco setups with single focus. Or make a guide. I'd buy it!!!!

More on this would definitely be welcome, especially with the GH5 which is still holding its own in 2019.

Amazing video! But I think you have oversqueezed your footage, making your head wider than it should be. A lot of these adapters will advertise a squeeze ratio (like 2x) but that will only be at infinity focus and for closer focus it might only be something like 1.8x or even 1.7x. So for anyone reading this, don’t just blindly follow numbers, use your eyes, look at your footage and evaluate it :) If it looks right, it is right, no matter what the numbers say :)
