Analyzing The Telemark Turn After Four Winters Of XCD Skiing

Ойын-сауық

I’m still fairly terrible at skiing, so maybe it wouldn’t be any major loss, but I want to preserve my current understanding of “the turn” in case I ever get good enough to forget what it felt like to be a beginner telemark skier. Hopefully the video helps someone, or at the very least maybe you’re a big enough nerd to enjoy this stuff!

I love the analysis you are applying to this! I tend to do the same and yours makes me think about it in different ways. If I can make one suggestion (and it’s not an “I’m right,” but more “see if it works”) is to lower your hands, and out in front - whether or not you shorten your polls. I have found it helps me with “intentionality,” balance, and being more dynamic in the turn. Would love to be out there skiing with you one day. Skied the Oak Creek side of the Flat Tops a (long) while ago.

A great video GoTeleOnTheMountain. One thing for sure, you are NOT "fairly terrible at skiing" and I hope you edit your intro to say "This is my 4th season of freeheel skiing and I want to openly discuss my current understanding of the turn." Everyone develops their own style and technique over time and while improvement is a noble pursuit, satisfaction should be the primary goal.

Thanks for the encouragement. I certainly don’t wish to prescribe what skiing ought to mean and look like for everyone else. In such a niche sport, I pretty much just want to connect with other folks like you who share the same thrill since we can be few and far between.
