I'm just glad that they flat out stated that the JPN government does paint itself as victims. The passive aggressive xenophobic and nationalistic tendencies of the JPN make them often gloss over the wrong they do. Make no mistake, US is corrupt. I live there. I know the corruption is real. Maybe all governments are. But no one especially is innocent after WW2. Especially not the German and JPN governments. It's only after acknowledging the wrong you do and changing that you move on. Not after always pretending someone ruined your life and you someone did nothing wrong.

@@entidade_000 I guess you are referring specifically to the social anxiety issue. I got out of Japan around 2019, so 5 years has passed since I have direct contact with Japanese society. Honestly I think I have no major reasons to believe that it has changed, but by no means I think that anime reflects everyone in that country. Social anxiety there is real, but different people experience it on many different degrees. Also, some people can navigate it, cope well with it, some cannot. As a foreigner trying to fit in that society, and as my japanese proficiency increased, I progressively experienced more japanese culture (which was very cool) and interactions but at the same time I was exposed to that side of japanese society too, I experienced some of that social anxiety as well, but I had my ways to cope with it.

That ending bit about the importance of not ignoring or blocking out your suffering and shame was beautiful. As painful as it is remembering our lowest or worst points, sometimes it’s accepting that very pain and shame that can shape us into beacons of hope that people can look to.

Indeed, there are many times when life can be nothing short of absolute HELL. But only through overcoming that hell will we ever lessen our pain while improving our and the lives of others, and you can’t overcome something until you confront it, no matter how much agony it may put you through, just know that it will improve things for you and others. And to quote Japan’s distant cousins, the Chinese, is one of my favourite proverbs, one that take to heart and follow every single day. “The hottest fires forge the strongest steel.”

Part of me agrees, and part of me feels South Park characters do not lend themselves well to this kind of analysis, given how they are cartoons that only exist to parody and be funny, with little to no real depth. The plots of episodes can have deeper meaning and reflections on real events, but the characters are just absurd. Cartman has confessed to huge crimes, like when he revealed in front of the whole town how he arranged for Scott Tenorman's parents to die, and fed them to him in chili, and he suffered no repercussions. South Park is a town full of idiots.

@@Babbleplay I used to think this until you rewatch the show and see that there are several character arcs and phases that change them. It’s just subtle since the parody and tone of South Park always has to have an absurd bent to it of which addresses the insanity of the issue they’re satirising. But there are character arcs and analysis especially in recent seasons. But in a broader sense. Watch blooms video on the psychology of Eric cartman just for a taster of this.

I was overwhelmed and tired... And then, for some time, I began fantasizing about getting run over by cars. Every time I needed to cross a road on my way to work, the thought would cross my mind. I didn't want to die or anything... No... I dreamt of being incapacitated, with being left in hospital for months so I wouldn't have to go to work anymore. Then I watched this show, and it felt like somebody understood. I never told anybody about those thoughts becuase thet were weird. This anime always reminds me to keep moving forward. I’ve been struggling with severe depression for years and self-deletion has always been on my mind. But I re-watch Paranoia Agent and I’m reminded that I cannot just wallow in misery and fantasies forever. The whole bit at the end about how “living is suffering” and “the safest place in life was the womb” is something I have to occasionally remind myself. But I also spiral into a lot of self-loathing because I’m just tired of trying so hard sometimes, you know? But I think Paranoia Agent, despite its cynical impression, is a story about hope and moving forward in spite of pain. Everyone is tired and suffering and weak to the whims of fantasy. But everyone is also capable of surviving, of changing and moving on. And we’re human- we’re going to fluctuate between these two modes. I think it’s worth noting that escapism isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Like a lot of things- in moderation, escapism can be useful in keeping our stress low. Paranoia Agent is critical of that escapism becoming our entire world and using it to mask our reality. Are you escaping because you want to relieve stress or because you don’t want to face the real world? TL;DR- Paranoia Agent means a lot to me and has kept me going whenever I find myself thinking about self-deletion. This video is an excellent break down of its message and how meaningful the anime is underneath its sardonic surface. RIP Satoshi Kon, you were a genius.

The topic of shame in japanese culture was also something shown in the movie Godzilla: Minus One (SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN IT) The protagonist of the movie, Koichi Shikishima, is a kamikaze pilot who faked mechanical issues in order to save his own life. Then, when Godzilla attacks the base Shikishima is on, he attempts to fire his plane's guns on the monster, but freezes in fear and gets knocked out. These actions lead Shikishima to be deemed a coward by multiple characters, and plagued by guilt, Shikishima attempts a suicidal attack on Godzilla with his plane at the end of the movie. However, over the course of the movie, Shikishima had begun to care for a woman named Noriko and an orphaned girl named Akiko, and this, mixed with the urgings of Tachibana, a mechanic who survived Godzilla's attack on the base and blamed Shikishima for failing to act, that he must let go of his guilt and live on not only for himself, but for his new family, leads Shikishima to using the ejector seat Tachibana had installed on his plane, returning to Noriko and Akiko. It doesn't have anything to do with the video, but i just thought it would be cool to mention, and Godzilla: Minus One is an absolutely amazing movie that i highly recommend.

The whole message of having to face reality is the healthier and better path to take, which ultimately leads to less destruction, reminds me of Shutter Island. The protagonist is delusional and lives in a fantasy because he doesn't want to face the harsh reality of what he did. This delusion ultimately caused him to harm others and cause property damage to the facility that's trying to help him. While that film is focusing on the individual, Paranoia Agent is more focused on a populace refusing to face reality.

Btw, what with this dive into Paranoia Agent and the recent release of Alan Wake 2 with such fanfare, I hope we get to see a video about the Dark Presence. Or maybe one on Mr. Scratch and how he is portrayed in both American Nightmare and Alan Wake 2.

  • @keithfilibeck2390

there isn't much, Mr. Scratch isn't real, and the Dark Presence doesn't actually have will, only in so much as it has what people THINK it wills, as they fall into it, Scratch himself is nothing more than just negative aspects of Alan Wake combined with rumors about him, he never existed and has no real agency, Alan Wake 1 and 2 is about how you can create narratives for the unknown, and what if there was a way for them to be real, to compound in complexity, but the true horror is that they have no origin, there is no monster, there is no willful cosmic force.

I remember watching this when it came out. I was at university and going through a bit of a depressed patch. On some level I related to the themes of stress, large workloads and cutting myself off from socialising. The opening song sort of became my unofficial theme tune to that part of my life. Hearing you say that it’s your favourite piece of media is amazing. I did the same and came back to it multiple times to get to grips with its messages. I needed to under why it resonated with me so much at that particular time in my life. It’s probably my favourite of Kons works and holds a special place in my heart. It has a ghostly, liminal space kind of feeling for me. Empty but calm. Terrifying but comforting. I’m glad this series was there for me at a time in my life when I needed it. Thanks for the video.

I was young when I saw it, but I am now an adult in a PTSD treatment. Trauma is painful to face, but the more you void it. The more it shows up and wrecks your life. It's so smartly written.

You know, when I was little, I watched this show thinking: "These are all really bad people being attacked by a vigilante, surely." and then when I was grown up thinking: "Oh, these are all bad people being attacked by themselves because of they're bad." Makes me realize I'm probably going to be stuck being stupid for my whole life lol

I've made this suggestion in the past, and I'll make it again no doubt: the villains in the fallout video game franchise, particularly those before the bethesda takeover, and even more particularly those within "New Vegas", would make for excellent video topics. I can almost guarantee that "analyzing Evil: Caesar aka Edward Sallow from fallout New Vegas" would be a smash hit. If nothing else, it would certainly make me personally very happy to hear your thoughts on this particular character, and those around him (he influences basically the whole franchise to such an immense degree that he has a profound effect on everybody in it." Getting stuck into fallout: New Vegas would be a great time investment, but certainly worth it in the long run, I believe. Regardless, great video as per usual. I'm still not convinced you're not an omnicient evil tentacled eye in real life though. You can't fool me!

For next Analyzing Evil I vote for the "Empire of Ursus"(or all the anit-infected nations) from Arknights. An evil empire that works the poor to dead, causing the said poor to become "infection"(called in that world Oripathy). Which the empire uses to excuse themselves to hunt and kill the poor. They also use children in labor camps, which is what happened to FrostNova form Reunion.

Cue paranoia agent being the most unnerving jab to my already scared psyche; I don’t know why the opening just scared tf out me and though I didn’t understand the full context of what was going on the weirdness and tension freaked me out.

This was beautifully explained, especially one of the biggest examples of the show and Japan's chosen ignorance of WWII. I believe I was around 13 when I watched "Flowers of War" for the first time, after being a die-hard anime fan and a huge appreciator of Japanese culture. So you can only imagine this weird sense of confusion, anger, and somewhat disgust when I realized that their government never seemed to acknowledge the atrocities they've committed from experiments, the assault of Nanking. Not even a drop of shame when it came to the comfort women exploited. The biggest takeaway from their culture is Honor. There is no honor whatsoever in this grand delusion of innocence.
