    @isaacgalewsky369

    the two are inseperable. While you can make sprite animations look really cool and flavourful, it's impossible to convey the amount of information a modern fighting game wants to convey.

  • @Arkalidor

    @Arkalidor

    7 жыл бұрын

    The two ARE separable... Under the name "graphics", I put textures, detailed models, which is an entirely different matter than the number of frames per second. Now, of course, there's the matter of graphical power, how many calculations does the engine need to make to create each frame. And that is precisely what I'm getting at: the lower the detail on each frame, the lesser calculations are needed, and in turn, the more frames a specific engine with finite capabilities can render on the go, making the animation that much smoother.

  • @isaacgalewsky369

    @isaacgalewsky369

    let me clarify, in fighting games it's not "just as good" to have an excellent aesthetics with sub-par graphics as the visuals need to convey more information than in other games. also the information i mentioned in my last comment isn't displayed by the number of frames per second, but by shading and slight model turns to indicate precise position.

  • @Arkalidor

    @Arkalidor

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hmmm okay, I see what you mean. I tend to think that it's still a matter of animation rather than graphics, but I get that without a certain level of detail, the animation is just not visible, and thus does not convey the necessary information. Fair point.

    +thesatanic6: Sorry, but no, graphics do matter in that case because if the animation is stiff or awkward, the game will feel like it's stiff or awkward to play. Have you ever played an MMO with slower animations (like GW2 for example) and then play an action-based JRPG with quicker animations like a Kingdom Hearts? The biggest difference in how one feels more sluggish than the other boils down to visuals and animation. By your logic of "graphics don't matter only the pure gameplay does," you're saying that you could have a complex working fighting game with just two cubes. I'm sorry, but you can't.

    Well yeah, 2D graphics like XIII are pretty expensive and there was no way they could afford that again. 3D is much cheaper fortunately, it would have looked better had they added a style to it to try and resemble 2D (like XRD or that chinese fighter with Terry and Benimaru as guest characters, it's models but they resemble 2D sprites with their shading and frame movements)

  • @cius2112

    @cius2112

    +Berry Box Not a real big thinker there are ya? Let me explain this to you. Ok so you know how they had been using the same sprites for like a decade and a half right? And they pretty much just created all new sprites? Now mind you think about what I said before. They had been using those previous sprites for along time. Making adjustments here and there add a character here and there, right? Why? They are already created you don't need to spend money to create them again. All you would need is to make some adjustments here and there and add some new characters. Trust me that is a lot cheaper than creating that many totally new 3D models. Now this is the part where you learn the truth. The big suits upstairs have decided that 2D is the past and the game should be 3D to appeal to mass audiences. These big suits have no experience in the gaming industry and have given SNK a pathetic budget in order to create a 3D fighter from scratch. And that's why it looks like shit.

  • @xLithiumFlower1

    @xLithiumFlower1

    8 жыл бұрын

    It was made 3D because of the new team (younger team which has experience in models and not sprites) and director working on it and again. They're aiming for 50 characters, there's no way reusing sprites was going to work for a goal like that, that'd be severely awful for them and they'd be limiting themselves badly from such a decision. They're bringing back a lot of old characters and a lot of new ones, there's no way in hell they can afford to make sheets for so many characters given the cost, time, and experience needed for them. Let's also mention new stages for the games (old games barely reused assets) and that makes it a lot more work you have to do, don't think reusing shit is going to cut it there either. If the gameplay is good and works out better for the team then I'm all for it, I'd love 2D sprites but I know they can't really afford to do that anymore, you have no idea how much time goes into making a single set for a character, not to mention color separation and EX versions.

They sold 81,25% of the company last year, and Sony is acutally funding the game (that also explains why KOF XIV is an Playstation exclusive). They dont have much money to work with, then they decided to make a 3D game, becuase its easier and cheaper to work with. Thats why this new game looks like that. Somehow this video is just now being recommended to me, and I’m just now (five years later) seeing your comment, but as a gamer who also cares about graphics since I am an artist, I have to say: Garou’s graphics are quite nice, honestly! I’ve recently fallen in love with Garou. I hadn’t played a traditional fighting game before it, but now I love it so much that I’ve even added it to my stream schedule and play it on Fightcade with a friend every week. The game’s animations definitely flow very nicely and are very clean. Even the voice acting is surprisingly good. The reason I say surprisingly is because Terry in every other King of Fighters and Fatal Fury game sounds worse in my opinion than Garou Terry. Sure, Garou Terry can sound a little drunk sometimes, but Terry’s lines in other games other than KoF14 (and funnily enough, Smash Bros) sound too over-exaggerated or forced and like they tried too hard.

I expected you would talk about contrasting important gameplay elements against aesthetic (especially background) elements as in games like Contra (NES) where bullets rapidly change their color to "glimmer" and stand out against a busy background, or compare games like Call of Duty and Team Fortress - where the former blends important elements into the background to make a muddy mess that emphasizes pretty pictures over gameplay and the latter reserves specific colors (saturated blues and reds) for gameplay elements like players and capturable points so that they never blend into the scenery. Make another vid like this one! :) If you got 250k+ hits for this, imagine what you could accomplish with strong points.

    Hey, I'm one of those guys who, upon finding such a cool channel cannot believe how he didn't spot it earlier. I'm seriously impressed by the sheer amount of insight you provide in your videos. Fantastic job! Even though I grew up playing fighting games, especially SF and MK back in the 90's all the way to mid 00's, I cannot remember when was the last time I have played any of it, but in terms of visual features, I agree with you, SF3 is my favorite as well. The point I wanted to share here, and I hope I won't sound dubious, is next: beautiful graphics is more important than the high-end graphics. For example, comic book style, cartoony graphics can be much more appealing and can be hell of a lot more atmospheric and vivid than real life photo-realistic based graphics with ultra sharp details and realistic visual representation, because it offers more room for exaggeration, which is a major artistic element, hence it can conjure up things more expressively and most definitely make our imagination running wild. Cheers!

    Hey Core-A! What you're talking about is actually aesthetics, not graphics. Graphics are the technical capabilities that the game shows off, while aesthetics are the choices that go into color palette, animations, character and setting design. For example you mention Street Fighter III at the end of the video as your favorite graphics in fighting games. However, the graphics are clearly worse than that of say Street Fighter IV. But perhaps there's something about the aesthetics and how that information is communicated to you that pleases you more in III than IV. Though I've never played any of the KoF games, I can guess that the negative response to the new trailers is due to the aesthetic not meshing well with the actual gameplay, even though the graphics are clearly better than older gamesi n the franchise, which is also something you mentioned. Great video, just thought I'd make that correction.

    +Kevino Put another way, graphics are your toolset, and aesthetics is how a designer uses that toolset. A pro with lesser tools can create a better product than an amateur with a wider toolset.

    +Kevino I agree this also goes for games that were highly successful that did NOT make major graphical "improvements" to there games for example King of Fighter series. Funny you did not show the timeline of classic KOF series how the sprites remained the same, but altered gameplay was improved each installment. It comes down to aesthetics, and "good" graphics do not matter in fighting games.

  • @JimmyGunawanX
    @JimmyGunawanX7 жыл бұрын

    We also need to consider the actual implementation of 2D and 3D graphics for fighting games. KOF 2D is way ahead of KOF 3D. Street Fighter 2D and 3D are both explored and evolved nicely. Street Fighter Alpha 3D was not great, but decent back then. Tekken has always been 3D, like DOA also, it is good that way.

    In a more general sense, I think good graphics indicate that a certain level of love and care was applied in making the game; it wasn't just made by soulless developers looking to cash in on your nostalgia, it was made by people who cared enough to do the game and its characters justice

    Good stuff as always mate! These vids are rly well made. I started playing fighting games like 22 years ago with SF2, Primal Rage, Ninja Turtles etc on my Sega Mega Drive. Once the Dreamcast was released FG graphics got to a whole new lvl - DoA2 & Soul Calibur were so much ahead of it's time graphically wise and I gotta say that I am rly impressed how much the graphics have improved in FGs these days. I wonder how far the developers can push next gen graphics - let me say in 10 years from now - SF8 and MK12. Thanks for sharing this and keep up the good work.

    As far as graphics in fighting games, I'm gonna call an obscure one and say Touhou Scarlet Weather Rhapsody (plus the Hisoutensoku expansion) probably have some of the best graphics in fighting games ever. The high-res energy projectiles plus the sort of pixel-y character designs just fuse so well for some reason.
