    Hi! An art student here, watching your process of learning ASK's style was definitely enjoyful! I'd say you did a pretty good job replicating ASK's style. Here's my take and critique on the few notes you've probably missed whilst studying ASK, hopefully it helps! Let's talk about colours first, 1. The "green" composition that ASK had done was to tone down the warm colours in order for the bright warm light to shine on the hair. Adjusting the entire piece to a warmer side will take away the focus for that part as it's not as contrasted, plus an artwork with only warm colour will not feel as warm when there's isn't "cool" side to the piece. (Because there's something to compare to) 2. The choice of saturated greens that ASK used across that piece was to again, establish contrast and focus using color accents. (A new colour element that is used sparingly in the piece) 3. Notice the shadow colours in the hair has a tint of "coolness" or blue in it which was also used to strengthen the warm feeling of the piece. Next, we have the hair structure. 1. ASK's hair look dynamic and feel dynamic is thanks to the interesting shapes drawing at the early stage of sketching. If it's very hard to digest the shapes you can try simplifying it into three levels, Lvl 1 Silhouette, Lvl 2 Medium Shaped Details, and Lvl 3 Small Details (the little holes that you see around the hair, apply this thinking to the colouring too!). Your approach was great, but it lacked a good silhouette shape and lvl 3 details hence why it looked stiff. Finally, we have composition. ASK was using a center focused composition, your piece took that away with an elongated canvas on the left (try cropping it to the middle with the character focused and you'll see a difference INSTANTLY! Your lineart is perfect and I don't think there's any issue with it. Overall, amazing attempt man.

    I would say the lineart is great on a technicality standpoint, but ASK does have a fluid feel to it that only time and practice can bring, is not something that can be replicatedon a few studies alone. Also the blending in some parts isn’t as smooth transitioning (look at her nose and neck) and that probably contributes to the feeling of stiffness.

    Hey there, thank you for taking the time to write this out, I am really grateful for the opportunity to learn. Colors seem to be my weak point as I am always taking colors directly from references as I am not confident enough with the rendering phase to also be picking my own colors. I will keep your advice in mind as I draw going forwards. I think I can learn a lot more if I am more aware.

    About what you said regarding the line presence, I think ASK's lines and poses have a distinct flow, which is quite difficult to achieve unless you practice it So I think poses and the flow of the lines (aka line confidence) are important to achieving that presence

    also, in the comparison part of the video, in my opinion the style is very similar to ask's. i think the only big difference is that ask seems to put like a LOT of little details, which makes it pretty realistic. and in no way am i a professional artist, but i think the flow of the art you created felt very similar to that of ask's. the character dynamics resemble each other, and the coloring is spot on. again thank u so much for making this video it was honestly so needed 😭😭

    You mentioned feeling like your lineart lacks the same presence. For that image you showed of theirs near the end, I actually think the main difference is actually that your lines are too neat. For that artwork you were trying to replicate, it actually has some very subtle messiness to the lineart - some parts seem to have been drawn with little smoothing on it and some of the lines (especially prominent in the outer lines of the hair) actually seem to have places where the lines are drawn twice. Not sure if this is exactly what makes the difference but to me it definitely seems like something that could influence the impact of the lineart

    Amazing video!! I think your line art versus ASK has less S curves and more C curves. I think adding more S curves will break up the symmetry. For example, the bangs in your line art look like they are only made up for C curves. And possibly adding more negative space and tapered strokes in the parts of the hair that are really floating in the wind because leaving them not tapered makes them look like they have volume but they shouldn't since they're pointing up. I love your videos, please continue to make more!!! Videos like these that break up art into their basic pieces are so helpful to me

    So I just recently found you and your breakdown really helped as I am currently trying to improve my rendering skills too. I think the way to "fix" what you say makes the back portion of your girls hair not pop, is to remove more detail. I think if you took out some of that detail and darkened it, you would see a difference. From a lot of the refs of ASK's that you shared, they have done that. The further the hair from the head, the less detail it needs.

  • @Churroization
    @Churroization Жыл бұрын

    I'm not that familiar with ASK's artwork, but from the examples given in this video the way they draw hair seems to be weighed down by gravity (as well as being voluminous), perhaps overly so. Whereas your drawing of hair seems less affected by it. It might be composition as well. When I look at ASK's hair the hair flows in a way that makes it look cohesive to the art as a whole. Even the loose strands don't detract from the overall shape of the hair. With your art the character has messy hair, but it also goes everywhere so the viewer's attention would be less focused. This isn't a bad thing though, it's really just preference in the end/what you want to achieve. Anyway thanks for this analysis, it was interesting to see the breakdown of techniques. I wish you well on your art journey!

    your attempt was pretty close! really loved how it turned out. I think one of the reasons why it still looks a little different is the contrast on the eyelashes? ASK seems to make the eyelashes very soft-ish, with lighter more tones around the corners. Sometimes ASK's lower lids are so light that they merge with the skin. Also, most of the time the artist has a more washed quality to the iris. While you put contrast (the darker shading at the top) on your character's eyes, ASK has maybe only one saturated colour and a grey-sh version of it on top. Great analysis video! Subscribing for more :D

    beautiful art this is the first time I see your work and ASK's (I've seen a few of his pics just never looked at the artist) really the difference in rendering seems to be just line texture. ASK has most lines with this graphite texture. Another thing is ASK seems to draw hair like its a liquid the pose of the character and flow of the hair aside, the biggest difference between your drawing and ask's is yours looks much smoother both great tho

    Hi mimi! This is a great video, and coming from an artist of 11 years, I think your rendering was successful! I totally agree that forms was what was "missing" from your study of ASK's hair, and I think what might help would be to paint the hair instead of drawing the outlines. By paint, I mean ASK seems to ignore the lineart and focus more on blocking in forms. In my eyes, they use a loose/messy lineart as a guideline, but mostly use the painting method to draw AND render which allows the forms in their drawing to look clean and intentional. To better explain what I'm talking about, take the silhouette of just your hair and then take the silhouettes of ASK's hair shapes. If you compare the two, you can see ASK uses BIG clean shapes in the hair (thin strands are there but subtle and don't interrupt the main form), while your hair form is more "branched" out and doesn't have as clear of a form. This is not to say your style has issues, just explaining the differences! I look forward to seeing your next study!

    Thank you for the feedback! I went into my own piece knowing I lacked the knowledge on forms so I thought that drawing the lines first might have helped (same thing with the piece in the beginning too). Painting directly seems rather daunting so the truth is that I have been afraid of trying it out properly. I will definitely be trying out a more painterly style soon though, I really like the look of those more than clean renders.

    Possibly, their style is very painterly so it might be a while before I am proficient enough to showcase something. I am working towards that direction though so even if not them directly, there should be something similar in the future.

    5:46 how to do the gradient? Like is it a gradient layer or just lightly going on with an airbrush? Idk much about digital art 😅

    In CSP there's a gradient tool for if you want the gradient to be more uniform (since airbrush may change size/opacity depending on what your settings are) so it's good for circles/rectangles etc. If you want more control use an airbrush. If I recall correctly, I think I used an airbrush for the one shown in the video.

    They are all default brushes from clip studio paint. I'm not sure if they can be moved into another software but these are really basic brushes so I'm sure you can find similar ones in the software you use.

    If you look at all the different tiny tool related windows, there should be one called Tool property (it's below the list of preset brush sizes, and it is also where all the sliders are), beside the brush size slider, there should be a button, if you click on that you can see the pressure settings. If you want to customize more stuff, there's a wrench tool at the bottom right corner of the Tool property window which opens up something similar to photoshop's brush settings menu.
