This hits home ..we found out that my wife was pregnant a week after my mum passed away from cancer in 2017. It hurts to this day that i could not tell her and that she never met my kids. Time flies - tomorrow, our son will turn 6 😮

Congratulations the three of you. And ignore those who say you should not have a kid. This is one of the few things that brings me and many others hope. Seeing good people do good and get the good things they deserve.

@@rdklkje13 Sure! My personal opinion on the matter is, if you feel like you would be happy having kids, then by all means, have them, and do not feel bad about it. We have an innate drive to procreate and that's the last thing we should consider giving up. There are so many other things to consider before getting to that point, like consumerism, excessive meat eating, flying, etc.

Congratulations! And yes, please, a video about how to decide whether to have children amidst the climate and ecological crises would be great, when you’re ready for it! Especially if you invite someone who has come to a different conclusion to join you (not debate, both-sides style, simply in deep, compassionate engagement). Also, more room for tears would be fantastic. We cannot engage with these crises in active, sustainable ways if we don’t make room for mourning what isn’t. What isn’t now, what wasn’t done in the past and what may never happen. Something that’s particularly tough for males in many cultures, yet a sine qua non if we are to stand a chance of somehow still creating a habitable future for ourselves on this planet.

Now at the end and while not really the done thing but, in for a penny and in for a pound, I might as well reply to my reply.....I'm reading your book to my 5 year old for his bed time story! Just started the Wind chapter which prompted the question "does the wind from my bottom cause climate change?"

Congratulations, to you and Pixel Mummy. She's a lovely, quiet little baby and I'm sure she's going to give you a lifetime of joy. Yes, that issue related to Climate Change, it is a sticky one to justify bringing new life into the world. Perhaps I can help a little there. Back in 1980, when I was still at school, my father worked on a contract for the British Climate Research unit, designing and installing computer programs for their data. To test the system, he asked for some data, which the scientists there gave him - and his programs started to provide some disturbing results. He questioned the scientists, asking them if this data was 'real' or just a few figures they'd plucked out the air for him. They told him the data was real and, at his prompting, explained what would start to happen to our climate if nothing was done. My father, quite shocked by this information, came home to tell me what he'd learned. From that point onwards, I decided I would not have children if and when I married. I did marry, and I resisted that strong biological urge until I was 29, whereupon the world got together and decided to ban CFCs. It was at that point that I believed the world was finally going to act, finally going to listen to the science community's desperate warnings, and that the national leaders of this world would come together to repair the damage to the environment. So, I had one child, and one only. I admit that I do feel guilty, at this point in time, that I have brought him into the world. Yes, that's true - but! If the world acted for the good of all once, then it 'can' act for the good of all again. And that is my one hope, that the world's leaders 'can' act as they did before, in unison, just like they did on that day to sign that pledge to save the ozone layer. It may be that, sadly, millions will have to die before today's national leaders stop thinking about themselves and their precious images for 5 minutes... see past themselves for once in their lives, and really start to see what their indifference is doing, not only to other countries, but to their own as well. I don't believe the UK government is capable of 'leading the way' with regard to making a good example for the world to follow, incapable of developing strong, new, but 'fair' environmental progress for us 'all.' Bickering, jealousy, indifference, greed and total ineptitude seems to be their particular flavours of the day right now, with the left hand not knowing what the right is doing. And I don't believe either side of the Commons is any better than the other. But I believe there are a few countries out there that may be ready to take decisive action very soon, and make dolts and laggards out of every other government in this world, showing themselves as the true example to humanity. As the great James Webb telescope looks out, searching further and further afield, studying space like no other telescope before, so we find more and more planetary that appear lifeless, barren, hostile. And so it seems to me that with each new discovery JWST makes, so we find ourselves more alone and more burdened with the responsibility for preserving this absolute jewel of a world, for it may be incomprehensibly rare, and we never find life beyond the microbe anywhere else in the Universe. And that's worth fighting for. It may be tomorrow that one important, influential national leader wakes up, realises this burden of responsibility upon his or her shoulders, and makes the change the rest of us have been waiting for, the change that finally turns the tide and paves the way to a new future. And that's why Pixel-Baby is so important, because it keeps us hoping that one of them cares enough to make a future for her and all the other little babies that I currently grieve to see whenever I go into town. We can't just give up now, throw in the towel, lose our place in this world, leave it to rack and ruin, let the astounding efforts of our visionary forefathers just fade away, and let who knows how many species just vanish like smoke on the wind. We have a duty to keep on working to keep a fragment of life alive and kicking in this unremarkable little corner of the Universe - so that remarkable little children like Pixel can grow up to wonder at them all, like we did as remarkable little children.

Congrats Simon! I lost both of my parents in 2022 while writing my thesis and we did not know anything about neither of my parents conditions. My dad died within 2 days of his heart diagnosis, my mom died within a week from her ovary cancer diagnosis. Me and my siblings never got to say a proper goodbyes to either of them. Life is such a fragile, precious, temporary thing.

Welcome to this troubled, but still often wonderful world! 🌱🌈♥ May you grow up to a time that is already better again, or may you be a part in bringing that about!

I saw somewhere that everyone in the world could consume resources at the levels Americans did in the 1960s and not oversubscribe the planet. For some it would be a minor inconvenience, but for most it would be a huge step up in quality of life. So it's not really that 8 billion people are a huge problem (or even 11 billion when we hit peak), it's how we distribute resources and consume as a whole. That is what has to change.
