An unusual tree in a UK Tropical Garden: Pseudopanax Crassifolius
So, there's this tree called Pseudopanax crassifolius, also known as lancewood or Hōreka by the Māori people.
These trees take their sweet time growing up, staying in a juvenile state for like 10 to 15 years. While they're young, they're all about self-protection mode. They grow tough, yucky-tasting leaves and look almost dead to keep animals like possums away. But once they're mature enough, they finally grow a trunk and a canopy. And guess what? Their leaves become less tough and super tasty, now that they're out of reach from those pesky predators. Nature's survival strategy at its finest!
In my own experience, I've got one of these trees in my garden, and it's been through two winters already. I planted it in a raised bed that's sheltered from the wind and gets plenty of sunlight. The soil is clay, and it shares the space with some bamboo and other tropical-looking plants.

Hii ,khu vườn của bạn nhiều cây trúc giống khu vườn nhiệt đới rất đa dạng ❤👍.
There are two varieties of Lancewood. The first one you brought up is the Fierce Lancewood, which is less common in the wild.
Brilliant find, very informative 👏
Very interesting, well done on your find, for 20 quid bonus.
