regarding the spinoff where maya is the main character, there is this part in the light novel that focused on the backstory of the Maya and her sister. that being said, i think its part of the yotsuba arc which will be adapted as a movie (they just announced it)

the first two seasons it made sense he was the main character. He is a bland straight man though, so an audience stand in. I haven't finished this season but i completely agree
