An Unremembered Legacy | T-62 Main Battle Tank Part 4

Although designed to combat the latest tanks the West could field, the T-62’s first combat actions would actually be against other Communist nations. In late August of 1968, T-62s of the First Guards Tank Army crossed the border between East Germany and Czechoslovakia as part of the Soviet Union’s invasion of the latter in response to liberal reforms by the Czech government. The invasion did not meet serious resistance by the Czechoslovakian Army, and following the repeal of earlier reforms, Soviet troops would remain in the country until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. As most of the tank units involved in the invasion did not come from the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany, the overwhelming majority of tanks involved in the invasion were T-54s and T-55s, which made up perhaps 80% of the tanks in the invasion force, with the remaining tanks being T-62s or T-10M heavy tanks.

Few years ago in Syria, one T62M with "Brezhnev eyebrows" protection on turret, recieved TOW hit into that protection on turret, and had zero damage to tank itself. Video was on YT until recently by the name "T62 Stalinium"...

Doesn't sound like a direct TOW 'hit' but perhaps a glancing blow or close proximity detonation. Of course, it all could have been an early model TOW from the Vietnam era or some Soviet ATGM. Regardless, there's good reasons to keep your front to the enemy in a tank.

Absolutely the best medium tank ever put into service. Sadlly T62 supposed to battle with M60, not leopard 2, but with good tactic, it still can throw a punch.

T-62 reminds me of the saying "nothing is more permanent than a temporary solution, or in this case a stop gap solution".

  • @ivanstepanovic1327

One of the reasons why other users were not so keen on buying and producing this tank was because it was a stopgap solution until newer tank is made. And it was more expensive than the T-55. So, why invest so much into T-62 (which had a lot similarities to T-55) when it was not meant to last that long, with later models pending? That new model was supposed to be T-64, with larger gun and composite armor. However, it was even more complex and expensive, so T-72 popped up as a cheaper and less complex tank. That is why other tank manufacturing nations within Soviet bloc waited and went straight for T-72 from T-55. Another tank manufacturing nation was Yugoslavia, though not a part of Eastern bloc. They acquired license to produce T-72, but the tank they made had some differences and was dubbed M84.

If you are going to parrot wikipedia, you could atleast do it properly. 1. T-62 wasn't considered a big enough improvement to warrent the retooling of Polish and Czech tank producers. The T-64 wasn't known about, nor would it be offered to export, that was the T-72. 2. The T-62 didn't have the same amount of variants, because you could just reuse the T-55 based ones. 3. The T-72 license wasn't aquired untill decades after the T-62 was offered.

We Vietnamese also has T-62s, exact numbers unknown but it is estimated to be around 70 or 200, depending on the source. This used to be the most powerful MBTs we got until the arrival of the T-90S/SKs.

In many ways, I like the T-62 more than than the T-72. The carousel autoloader requires too many design concessions for my liking, and the T-72 doesn’t bring some of the T-64's strongest features to the table. The T-72 was an attempt to hark back to the reliability and low production costs associated with a mechanically simple design, but the T-55 and T-62 already filled this role. The T-72 came to prominence for political reasons as much as any other, instead of relying on the merit of its design, and we see the lingering costs of the Soviet selection process in its enduring legacy today.

Dude, T-64 has literally nothing to offer over 72. Initially 72 was considered the simpler and cheaper tank relegated to motor rifle support role so 64 and 80 were getting all the premier electronics but that was equalized by the dissolution with T-72B. Note how T-64 didn't even get Kontakt-5, it was effectively phased out in favor of 80. 5TDF has almost as bad a reputation as Leyland L60 - a maintenance queen and oil hog but at least not horrendously underpowered. The 64/80 MZ carousel cuts off the driver's access to turret unlike the 72 AZ and it is a somewhat larger profile. Finally, T-64 design started at 36 tons and went up to 43 tons which is quite a lot in relative terms (especially since it uses half-width torsion bars) that must have affected mobility and reliability.

Russia giving Donbas T-62 because they dedicated their newer tanks to faces NATO tank: "Oh they given their puppet trash". Wow, the double standard.
