An Unbreakable Twist on an Easy Math Card Trick!

Ғылым және технология

Is the math card magic trick we showed you last time too easy for your friends to break? Then learn a devious twist to the original trick with Darren and Charlotte to make it virtually impossible to see through!
Fitch Cheney’s Five Card Trick is a mind-blowing math card trick any two people can perform in a heartbeat. However, the original trick has a fixed position _suit card_, which anybody with a sharp eye and a sharp mind might identify and use to figure out the trick. Our solution? Make that suit card change positions every time with some more clever math. We even provide GitHub Python code so you can practice both versions of the trick by yourself!

For future pt.2 and pt.3 or more, it would have been nice to have more background on the reason I clicked on the video which was to see an interesting card trick and the twist on it, since this is the first video I watched as it simply showed up in the feed and I didn't come from the first. Maybe show the card trick again at the beginning and then show your change to it. Take this however you want, I just noticed you have a small/new channel and would give an honest opinion, I think you guys have a lot of potential.

Agree, got this video in the feed, around 2 minutes in I realized there is a prerequisite video. After watching that, it's indeed a cool a trick.

I think if you show it to someone they next want to try to do the choosing from the 5 stack. In that case I don't think it's 'decodeable' with the remaining 4 cards. At least not without playing with extra positioning like putting a little bit higher/lower, etc.

You're right, the trick would sometimes be impossible if the person you show it to decides to choose the fifth card for you. But as long as you get to choose which card to keep and which cards to place, it'll work perfectly. Good observation, though; I wonder if there's a way to modify the trick so other people can choose the card and you can still make it work...maybe that's the subject for a future video, haha~ -D

@@SudoScientific hey, I came up with a way to make it work if someone wants to choose the hidden card, but for that to happen, one more card is needed in the trick. To do this, consider that Clubs are the opposite of Hearts, and Spades are the opposite of Diamonds. If the first card you put down is the lowest or only card in that suit, whoever is decoding must switch to the opposite suit. After this, there are 4 cards left: If the second card you choose is the lowest, the suit remains as it is, and you add the other 3 cards as in the original trick. If the second card chosen is the second lowest, the suit remains but you subtract the remaining 3 cards (same as in the original) If the second card chosen is the third lowest, you add it but change it to the other suit of the same color. If it is the highest, you subtract it and change to the suit of the same color. Example: 2D, 2S, 8S, 8C, QD and the hidden card is the 7H. The order could be: 8C 2S 2D 8S QD The 8C is the lowest of its suit, so you should switch to Hearts. 2S is the second lowest, so it keeps the suit and subtract the last 3. The last 3 are Small Medium Large = 1 (subtract 1 and it becomes 7H). This method allows multiple orders for the same result, in this case it would also be possible for the order to be 2S 8S QD 2D 8C 2S is the lowest of its suit, so switch to Diamonds. 8S is the third lowest, so switch to the suit of same color (Hearts) and add the last 3. The last 3 are Large Small Medium = 5, add 5 to 2. 7H.

Nice! Your system seems to work flawlessly, and I think it's really clever! I was thinking as well; a simpler solution (to explain, definitely way harder to use in practice) is to assign every permutation of the 5 cards (differentiated by size) to a different card in the deck. With this solution, you could even go up to a deck of 125 unique cards-there are 5! = 120 permutations, and the guesser could eliminate the five cards they were shown. You'd have to find a nice way to memorize every permutation, though. I definitely like your solution better in some aspects. -D

@@SudoScientific Nice! I didn't think about the possibility of representing the card whitout relating it to the other 5's. Sure, a nice way would be to use the first card to represent the suit. Lowest = clubs ..... Then the other 4 to represent the number!
