The Munster edition, published in 1864-1869 in St. Petersburg, combined portraits and biographies of Russian figures who glorified Russia in different fields and at different times. Russian Russians, wrote A. E. Munster, and not a single Russian figure should be forgotten by us. Russian Russian Portrait Gallery was published in the wake of the rise of national consciousness and interest in all things Russian.
