Thank you so much! I also couldn't agree more with the comment about the "other character" the music delivers some of my favorite plot points (my god the third movement of the liz suite says more than a lot of the words)

I liked the part of the editing you did with footage, and the itunes page sort of faded together, it looked really seamless

I was watching Hiding in Public's Persona video, when he gave you the shout out, and I saw Mizore at a piano in the background. I stopped what I was going, and came here instantly. Liz, and by extension, Eupho, mean the world to me due to how much they've helped changed my life in the past year. The first time I watched Liz was before I watched Eupho. It made me cry so many times for so many different reasons. I loved it, and immediately went to watch both seasons of Eupho. I feel in love with Kumiko, and later her relationship with Reina. Shortly after I got my first art commission for an anime character... Reina. Eupho and Liz have done so much for me, and I feel so blessed that I got to watch your video tonight. Seriously well done, and I appreciate your efforts with this. Thanks for being a music nerd.

Beautiful videos thank you so much for making this. I was in a similar place. A very dark place, when I went and first saw Liz. I don’t want to say something as dramatic as it saved my life, but it was such a profoundly beautiful and emotional experience that helped me immensely and has stayed with me ever since. So I appreciate you sharing your story and how much this film means to you. On a more technical side, I appreciate the analysis as well. I fell in love with this soundtrack but had no idea how Ushio made the unique sounds in it, so I enjoyed learning about a prepared piano. The soundscape of Liz speaks to me in a way no other music has done. The prepared piano is so unique in that respect. It really captures what it FEELS like to feel. The little twinges, the churning throbs, the low droning, the choked harsh pinpricks, the soaring high frequencies that rise and fall, the bubbling building underneath. All blended together. Emotions don’t feel like a sad violin solo. They feel like a storm of different temperatures, textures, frequencies and oscillations all at war. The prepared piano, Ushio’s score, captures this “feeling of feelings” in a way I’ve never experienced which led to a deeply captivating and immersive experience. Combine this with Yamada’s intimate, rich, emotive story boarding, as well as the art direction and you have a sublime experience. I think your piece at the end was really good by the way! You really captured the essence of what makes the Liz soundtrack compelling.

I feel a very unnatural yet comforting connection to this video. I really enjoy your overall presentation of the topic and I appreciate your emotional investment to the music. I'll definitely stay tuned to see what else you have in store in the future. Thank you so much for making this!

Thank you so much for adding the personal message at the beginning of the video, I really felt what you were saying. For a while I was going through what you were in regards to being shut in, skipping meals, anxiety, ect. Although I watched something different (Violet Evergarden) around the time of the Kyoani incident, I too was hit with immense grief by the end of the series. Again thank you for making this video, but I think you critique yourself too much. You do a wonderful job at making videos and your narration always hits the point in my eyes.

I've found a great plot analysis from a youtube comment written by​ Nicolai Marquez: ''People often praise it based on the production values, and how it elevates the simple story of two girls drifting apart. But the movie is so much more nuanced and understated than that. And is precisely because of the production and how delicate the animation is that we are able to see even the thought process of the characters just through their faces and body language. But yeah, there was A LOT of though put into the characters in the movie, and also in how the movie plays with parallels almost in every way it can. I remember I had mixed feeling about that "I like your Oboe" scene the first time I watched it. I couldn't help but think that Nozomi was being an asshole. The second time around though, I realized that she was... well, being an asshole, but not on purpose. She realized that she was putting up a wall all of that time, and it was amazing. Realizing that the characters feel a certain way without the movie telling you directly that is one of the best achievements of this movie, and why I think is such a masterpiece. Also, It shows that to get through peoples walls isn't easy, and that Nozomi actually said something honest because Mizore got through her.But she didn't say it in the confession scene, because people don't work that way. She was still nervous there to acknowledge her feelings, but she still does at the end of the movie. She'd already thought about it for a while. Also, more parallels. At the beggining of the movie, in the walking scene, Nozomi is always on the front, and as they're walking up to the classrooms, we see many times how Mizore "looks up" to Nozomi, both in literal and figurative way. At the end, when they're finally "on sync", they're leaving the school, and Nozomi is still on front, but that means she is "looking up" Mizore now , because she has gained a new understanding of her, and she admires her now. This movie is just kind of perfect.'' hope everyone like it:)

I know this comment is almost a year old but I rewatched Liz and the Blue Bird in English dub the other day and just to add to how amazing it is, I really understood a second time around how the movie portrayed character thoughts and motivations so carefully like a perfect jenga tower; it's the first time I can remember as well where a film was so good at using its medium for characters it even utilized what others can see as an achingly slow pace because that's how Mizore is, that's how she sees the world, very thoughtfully, guarded, and anxious- the groundwork of the movie itself is built on character expression Also in having the chance to compare dubs, Liz is one of those rare movies where I feel the voice acting in either elevates the story, atmosphere, and characters in a way only those languages and the cultures tied to them can In Japanese for instance Nozomi replying "I love when you play Oboe" she says it in a reserved way unlike her usual social butterfly self, as if Mizore's mannerisms have rubbed off on her and she's still processing how she feels in that same deliberate way the pacing has given us, she cares but she doesn't want to show it so readily when she's only just hit her realization point and has to figure it out for herself and is considerate of Mizore's feelings In English the same line is spoken with a passion that's trying so hard to hold back from spilling over everything Nozomi feels, as if yet again Mizore has rubbed off on her but in the manner of the courage she gained to confront Nozomi with her feelings in the science lab, but her voice doesn't dare spill everything out yet because it's still messy and unrefined, she needs to put her emotions together yet with that one line delivery you see her unravel as much as in Japanese The first is a great embodiment of Japanese reservations, the second is a great embodiment of Western expressiveness Liz and the Bluebird is a masterwork that offers infinite interpretations and few definite answers much like other films of its level

As someone that has been struggling with anxiety recently this hit pretty hard. I relate to a lot of what you said in the beginning, but I think you have a great way with words even if you don't think so. Fantastic video and analysis, I think we can all tell that you really put your heart and soul into this. Thank you!

I'll say I still struggle with it constantly, it's a constant battle but it's just important to keep fighting. Listen to your body and know you're not alone in it. This video alone made me start bawling just hearing you outline and put into words why the track was so perfect.... With regards to you not doing videos and whatnot after the arson I had a similar response in that I watched Tamako Love Story the day after and then didn't touch *any* anime for the next month just because it immediately reminded me of the horrible event. Thank you for this video. Thank you for having the idea of it, working on it, finishing it and putting it online. There must have been a lot of self-doubt between all of these steps, but you found the strengh anyway, thank you for that. The part about not having the right words and other people being better and everything was especially relatable to me, as i struggle with that a lot. I kinda have that exact feeling after watching this video actually, wich is quite ironic haha. This video resonated a lot with me and made a difference to me, and i'm sure i'm not the only one, so you can be sure it was worth it. I think i'll try to work on a tribute of my own, even if it's not much. Hang in there.

Thanks for your analysis of the piece and of liz! I could never vibe to contemporary music as properly or as attentively until I listened to the bgm while watching the movie. I think contemporary music in liz really brought out the natural ambience of sound, and it was pretty surreal to experience it. It's similar to how I felt when watching Joker 2019, where the music provided a very telling idea of how the characters were feeling. prepared pianos are so cool!

I love seeing the technical breakdown on music and sounds, it's a very unique thing, something I've only been introduced to on your channel. I really like listening to music but I can't say I'm passionate about it(or really anything) the way others can be, but still seeing the breakdown of a piece, how it was created, and insights on what it was trying to convey with the different parts from someone who is more qualified to understand that than I is enlightening, and I will always continue to watch your videos.

Ah well I'm sorry to disappoint you haha, I'm glad you were still able to get some enjoyment out of the video regardless. I'll be honest and say that after listening to it, the piece she plays reminds me of something but I can't remember. I tried transcribing the melody and looking it up that way but google proved to be wildly unhelpful. I also asked a buddy of mine who is a bit more familiar with piano rep and he didn't know either. It sounds a lot like a warm up, I'll keep looking and try to figure it out though (unless you find it first, in which case please tell me hahaha) :]

Thanks for making this video. I also watched this movie during my more extreme sides of being a shut in then shortly after bought the blu-ray to show my brother. Like you, depression and anxiety keeps me from doing things I care about, passing time only makes it harder to improve in my own writing and music. I was first exposed to Kensuke Ushio’s music in A Silent Voice, so I immediately recognized him on Liz and The Bluebird. His ambient sounds and organic noises resonates with me because it sounds raw or amateurish which allows someone like me, who lacks complex aural skills, to feel connected to the sound or timbre rather than the the harmony/melody itself like in Jazz or Classical. Your video helps me understand what I felt about Kensuke Ushio’s music. I didn’t know about timbre concepts like prepared piano, originally, I thought he recorded ambient noises to achieve his sound. Once again, I’d like to thank you for putting this video out.

What a great video! I actually hardly know anything about music, even probably less than most of the basics, but I still love music and can recognize how amazing tracks can be just by hearing it alone. I was able to learn more about music and its process watching your video. I love this movie and bought it immediatly as soon as it came out. I love KyoAni and Sound Euphonium. I found your channel from the Land of the Lustrous pieces. I especially was intrigued with Cinnibar's theme. I didn't even know what an erhu was and I love the instrument now and I think I can even tell when it's being used. I would also like to hear the song you made, it really does sound like you're using a "string" instrument and not a piano. Overall, I'm glad to see you making a video again and now I want to watch this movie again (along with listening to the soundtrack)!

You can create a jp itunes account then use jp apple gift cards. Or if you're just looking for liz you can buy physical then download it onto your computer

I think the easiest way is to buy it physical and have it shipped to wherever you are :] There are a few stores you can buy from online or ebay. Those are probably the easiest. Or if you have access to Jp itunes, you can buy it there

Your videos seem to be well made but I dont know jack shit about music composition and such and a lot of things you say are lost on me and cannot fully appreciate your videos. Is it possible to make some sort of into video of some sort related to anime?

It is definitely possible, do you have any thoughts on what you'd like to learn about? Just start from scratch or a little further in? This is something I've thought about a bit before but get kinda stuck on where to begin. During videos I try to build up context rather than do lengthy explanations on certain concepts. I try to show what it's like to think from a composer perspective and kinda what we think about when scoring. I do want to do my best to make things accessible though so I could definitely try and make a little guide video explaining some concepts or techniques that I bring up frequently. Thanks for the idea :]
