An Outsider Learns About the Seventh-Day Adventist Church

The one nugget almost everybody know about the Seventh Day Adventist church is that they go to church on Saturdays, but what else do they believe? I went to an Adventist church in Oregon to find out.

My former neighbour is an Adventist pastor. I was invited to a video presentation at their church. During our weekly drives, we had plenty of time to chat. I have never met a kinder, more humble and knowledgeable family. He has something nice to say about every denomination and is very well read about so many aspects of theology. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Well... look at this... "we suppose that the Antichrist, the head of all these men, is the Pope of Rome" -John Wycliffe(former Catholic Priest/Reformer/Protestant), Foxes Book of Martyrs, p.90 "The Pope is... the true Antichrist, of whom it is written, that he sitteth in the temple of God,among the people where Christ is worshipped... " -John Huss(former Catholic Priest/Reformer/Protestant)(1372-1415) "The vicar is in the place of an a sent chief,-what is such a vicar but Antichrist. I know and am certain that the papacy(Catholic religion system) is the kingdom of Babylon" -Martin Luther(former Catholic priest/Reformer/Protestant), ("Works" vol.ii., p.385) "Yea, we doubt not to prove the kingdom of the Pope to be the kingdom and power of Antichrist" -John Knox(Former Catholic priest/Reformer/Protestant), The Works of John Knox "He it is... that exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped... claiming the highest power, and highest honor... claiming the prerogatives which belong to God alone." @@ChapP2811 All of those comments are true. The SDA Church is not exclusive to that idea, but carries the torch in teaching about that system of the Catholic Church being the beastly power controlled by the Popes and ultimately by demonic angels. The RCC states that tradition holds priority over the scriptures. Isn't that just dandy?! We are to follow God's Law rather than man's laws and requirements. God does not force His way upon us, while the RCC does.

@@ChapP2811 All of which sums to a big, giant, tradition, and I have no more mandate to agree with the affirmation of a consensus of certain heroes of the faith on the full nature of the Catholic Church than I do the gentleman at the table next to me at Applebees, unless I am persuaded by Scripture and sound logic. And while I can see enough to convince me that the Catholic Church is likely in error, I have yet to see one appeal to Scripture for it's 'plain idolotry( judged by it's own doctrine, across history and at present) or 'anti-christian' nature that doesn't reduce to the world's biggest round of 'Is not! Is too! Uh uh! Uh huh!', ad infinitim. Plenty that can be easily turned to sin, but nothing( including veneration of Mary and the Saints) that is plainly, openly, by it's own reasoning and claims, the thing itself. Even we non Catholics believe that God works not only for others but in us through our prayers. Catholicism, as far as I can tell, merely differs in being a sort of Armenianism with special claims. The heat of the argument stems from a time in Church history when God might frankly have said to the Church/es 'You have the reputation of being righteous, but are not. I council you to preserve what little remains'; Protestants argued against each other with scarcely less heat than against the Catholic Church itself. Leave it in the past.

This is the 3rd post I’ve seen by you criticizing the church, and I’m sure you’ve written many more. Matthew 7:3-5 (NIV) 3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Real Estate Unplugged the vegetarian diet is encouraged predominantly for health reasons. Eating healthy gives you a clearer mind, and a clearer mind means a stronger relationship with God. Christ said that our bodies are temples of the Living God, thus if you want God to live there, you need a clear, sound mind. I hope this made sense. As they mentioned in the video, being a vegetarian is not a prerequisite to joining the church. It’s something people do to improve their lives and their relationship with Christ.

  • @MoonDragonGurl

Adrian Pritchard lately there has been more and more research done looking at vegetarian diets as well as documentaries. Results are showing that not only is there a smaller global footprint, but if done properly, it can even reverse various diseases (not all). I’m not saying everyone needs to follow a vegetarian lifestyle. I was just trying to explain the reasons why Adventist’s encourage vegetarian diets. I know plenty of vegetarians that don’t eat balanced diets, and as a result suffer from obesity and other health complications, but if done properly, it can make a world of difference. But you’re right, it takes a lot of planning to be mindful of eating healthy, which isn’t always practical or financially doable, so I completely get it.

As a former Adventist coming to this channel, I really appreciate this discussion. On the surface, Adventism appears very mainstream protestant with the exception of special priority on health and seventh-day sabbath. However, there is a lot under the surface that causes countless very messy situations between people and a bad taste resulting from a very performance-based and critical approach to church that often results in a feeling of inherent hypocrisy. There are many apparent self-contradictions in the theology. A very Arian influenced Christology while affirming the trinity. Salvation by grace through faith and not works, in contrast with investigative judgement, remnant church, sabbath-keeping as a judgement priority, and probation. Ellen White carries next to equal authority as the Bible itself, yet a complete rejection of the early church and outright anti-catholic rhetoric. (pope is anticrist). Since a major dispute in the late 1980's the Adventist church rarely discusses these matters directly and has transitioned away from the traditions that used to be so closely associated with the church without ever addressing the root of the problem. Instead in my experience, these issues are actively concealed while the undisputed protestant theology is what is made to appear forefront. I look forward to a continuation of this video, an excellent discussion as usual.

Oddly enough, I have met only a handful of formers whose leaving had anything to do with a bad experience or hurt feelings. I, as well as thousands and thousands of people who have intentionally left the SDA church have done so because we carefully studied and read our Bibles and found that their unique, core doctrines do not line up with the Bible.

@@OneSingleJoy Thanks for your response, don't get me wrong, I know many wonderful Adventist people and the church experience is often wonderful. However, some of the very central theologies of the church can result in some very negative things when taken to its full conclusion. My critique is that the extremists are not the average Adventists, but the founders, instilling some very flawed perspectives into the very foundation of the denomination. I'm glad that so many Adventists are able to practice the faith in a positive way, but I've also seen the worst of the church manifest itself in widely varied congregations all over the United States, far more than can be considered the fringes.

I've had very bad experiences in the Adventist church, but didn't think that justified leaving. I was also advised when I left that I should not confuse problems with people with problems with the church, but that hasn't been my motivation either. Matt has done a phenomenal job on this channel of describing much of the potential issues of perspective that can skew understanding of God and the presuppositions that can influence a flawed understanding of the Bible. I came to the conclusion that you have to accept a wide variety of assumptions that can't be supported historically or biblically to arrive at the conclusions of the Adventist church. And a very real result of that is that it can really hurt people as well when put into practice completely.

Did your friends tell you that the church teaches them that in the last days Sunday worshipping Christians will persecute them? Did they tell you that the SDA Church teaches that worshipping on Sundays means you're worshipping a sun god?

I think there can be a balance, @DiscoFalcon. You have valid points about some believers reading into every current event ... and somehow turing it into an eschatological event. Yet we still look forward to His coming, living each day as if we could die tonight. The reality being that -- biblically -- it doesn't seem as if the timing is correct for Jesus' return. So much needs to occur before that ever happens.

  • @cklester

    @cklester

    4 жыл бұрын

@DiscoFalcon The Bible is very clear about eschatology and end-times revelation: Revelation 1:1-3: "This is the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants what must soon come to pass. He made it known by sending His angel to His servant John, who testifies to everything he saw. This is the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and obey what is written in it, because the time is near." Notice that Jesus says those "who hear and obey what is written in the words of this prophecy" are "blessed." His Word. People do get quickly get off the rails, but it does not require "a strong emphasis on eschatology." It just requires... flawed human beings. You'll find those in every religion on planet earth. Let me know if you ever find one without them. "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy." (Acts 2:17-18). The church will have prophets in the end. They will be "focused on living gospel-centered lives" because they have a relationship with Jesus. They will be able to communicate the three angels' messages of Revelation because they know prophecy. Sounds like Seventh-Day Adventists are right where they need to be. And who is worried? ;-)

@DiscoFalcon We understand that. What we do not encourage is placing exact dates of Jesus's return to this earth, cause that's not up to us. But what we do believe is in preparation for the the end times when they are at the fullest of their power. When it comes to the doctrine of the Rapture, we believe in it, we just don't believe it'll happen in secret and before the tribulation. The tribulation for us is a time where both the church will get tested for how firm it is to stand for the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and those who are not in full submission to God will unfortunately be on the receiving end of God's judgments as they fall on the earth. Do we still need to preach the gospel? Absolutely. But it's more what the SDA commonly refers to as the Eternal Gospel, which is found in Revelations chapter 14:6-12. We still need to preach. We still need to serve our fellow man. And most of all, we also still need to make our walk on this earth a lot closer to how Jesus carried out his life, when not speaking publicly - with prayer, diligent study, and grateful obedience to God's Law, because we were saved by Christ.

This is going to be interesting. This was really a soft introduction to Adventism. We as the Seventh-day Adventist Church have an amalgamation of doctrinal belifes that are borrowed from older Protestant denominations stretching all the way back to the 1st century church. Depending on how deep this next sectiongoes, you'll see things that from Calvinism, Lutheranism, and Arminian/Weslyan. We are not the only church that keeps the Sabbath, we are just the largest Protestant group to do this. To a lesser degree the Ethiopian Orthodox Church still retains Sabbath and is larger with about double the membership with over 40million adherents, and even some Catholic congregations have Saturday Mass along with some Protestant groups starting to have services on Saturday and Sunday, or coming to the conclusion that no day is inherentlhy sacred. But to break it down Adventism has only two unique doctrines that deal with eschatology(as Matt mentioned at the end). These doctrines are the investigative judgement and the Heavenly Sanctuary. Other doctrines are found in other denomination to lesser or greater degrees, even if they aren't popular, like the state of the dead, dietary restrictions, dress reform and more. There are few teachings held exclusively by Seventh-day Adventists, but the denomination does have a number of distinctive doctrines which differentiate it from other Christian churches. Some of their views which differ from most Christian churches include: the perpetuity of the seventh-day Sabbath, the unconsciousness of man in death, conditional immortality, an atoning ministry of Jesus Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, and an “investigative judgment” that commenced in 1844. Furthermore, a traditionally historicist approach to prophecy has led Adventists to develop a unique system of eschatological beliefs which incorporates a commandment-keeping "remnant", a universal end-time crisis revolving around the law of God, and the visible return of Jesus Christ prior to a millennial reign of believers in heaven. There are some variations with individual people... the Traditionalists, Historical and Progressives. We also have a strong emphasis on health and education which is why we have the largest Protestant based School and Hospital system in the world. It's interesting that Matt when to Oregon which is one of the few states that has an Adventist population of over or near 1% SDA(Seventh-day Adventist) population.

We Adventists to be blunt did a makeover around the 50s and 70s to make is more PALATABLE to the general public. Some members liked it some didn't. One of the big things that has to confuse those outside the SDA church is the personal opinions of so many SDAs. They seem to be all over the theological map-and there’s a reason for this. Back in 1979/80, Desmond Ford and Robert Brinsmead were theologians/pastors who said that some SDA theology was wrong. And during the 1980’s, a growing movement of discontent began. There was a desire to damp down the use of EGW, to push aside the anti Catholic stance, to change to a contemporary Evangelical style of worship. And thirty years ago it happened when Celebration Center opened in Colton with a contemporary service with electric guitars, drums, words projected onto a screen and barely an EGW word mentioned. And the movement spread all over North America. So, today, even sometimes in one town you can have a liberal congregation that is very different in practice and theological emphasis from the conservative congregation also in town. So, you wind up with liberal Adventist’s claiming they don’t believe in EGW as authority, Bible only etc. And then you have the conservatives that absolutely reject those liberal viewpoints. A good example of this split is women’s ordination. The Pacific Union conference allows, against the wishes of the world church, the ordination of women as pastors. Churches within that union do have ‘ordained’ pastors whose ordination is not recognized by the world church (the General Conference). The world church has threatened disciplinary action for these ordinations, but hasn’t carried it out. So, you have a very schizophrenic church with members often giving their personal opinion and not the actual doctrine of the world church.

Thanks Matt... I can't wait for the theology questions! I was raised 4th gen SDA! Dad was an SDA Pastor... The Adventist belief in the doctrine of the Investigative Judgment is decidedly anti Christian. Ellen White is to Adventism what Joseph Smith is to Mormonism.. New revelation and gnostic knowledge from the 'Prophet's" visions is what drives their theology. Adventists started out as anti Trinitarian sect and still aren't able to confess an orthodox belief in The Holy Trinity. They teach that Christians may not reach salvation unless they keep the Jewish Sabbath holy.. (How ever they happen to define it at the time)..Nice bunch of guys btw.. no wonder there were 3 of them.. backup in case you start asking tricky questions.. Ellen White wrote that it is a sin for a Christian to say he was saved because he could never be sure he would make it through the Investigative Judgement. Adventist theology is remarkably Pelagian. The theology does not rightly divide the Word of law and Gospel. When discovering what Adventism REALLY teaches and practices, one can't distinguish between the voice of Moses from the voice of our Savior. Amen. I’m a former SDA and I couldn’t agree more. My parents and a young me left the church when I was 10. Forever grateful that 17 years later I was saved and rescued out of an atheistic worldview. For the first time I was introduced to grace. And the true gospel. Although I left the sda church when I was a kid, years later I still had to unlearn a ton of stuff I remembered. Ellen G White is a heretic and there’s so many false doctrines within the church. AMAZING people but a church that is heavily works based and foundations built on a false prophet

I wasn’t raised Adventist so I haven’t had the full experience of its educational system but I understand where your comments are coming from. The conservative side of adventism has a certain way of producing those who reject it because they eventually figure out that it’s demands are impossible to meet. Such is the case in other flavors of Christianity I’ve been in. When I came into the SDA church I was taught the traditional “you’ll never know when your name comes up” version of the IJ, but as I’ve done community work for the past eight years I’ve seen that that interpretation of the IJ is unfruitful. Since focusing on the Gospel and the cross I’ve come to reframe the IJ in terms of the light of Christ and his ultimate purpose to shine through a united church body of all Christians. It’s obvious to me that there’s a pre-advent process but Adventist have been so weak on the Gospel for so long we forget that “there’s no condemnation/judgement for those in Christ Jesus”. God at some point weeds out those who say they are Christians but never lived for him, making their own flawed concept of God an idol.

2 Years old comment, but oh well. I am not in a denomination at all as a Bible believing Christian, but has spent some time in Adventist churches in different areas in my home country which is Norway. I can say that all three places I've got to attend sermons in the Adventist churches was all very based in reading and teaching the scriptures. And the Adventists which I've spoken to has all had very similar view on theology and the Bible which I've attained through long time spent reading and studying myself. They have the most Scripture based teaching I've found in churches so far, and that goes for all 3 of them. And the Bible is pretty much open and used throughout the sermons no matter which Adventist church you attend. They have their thing with Ellen G White, but never has a sermon ever been about her or any of the books. Only the Bible and Yahushua, they do go by the name Jesus Christ as usual though (well, Jesus Kristus in norwegian). Only outside of sermons in personal talk between myself and Adventists have I heard about Ellen and her books (which isn't really an occurrence that happen often). But no matter which Adventist church, or who I talked to. They all Used Ellen G White's books like any other Christian would buy a Bible Commentary to use alongside the Bible (to help study). Her writings have no authority over the Bible, and as a non Adventist which has spent much time in their churches. I am quite sure they all will agree on that statement. I am open for corrections though. I went to the net. "Cult this, cult that". Much because of old time history and the great disappointment when the Adventist Church predicted a time for the second coming which didn't happen. But should someone really be stapled something such vile just because what happened a long time ago? And what I've read and heard that disappointment really pushed forward the Adventists to study scriptures even more, also together with other denominations. It seems it humbled the church a lot, and it clearly shows today in their teachings. Their theology is really sound and rooted deeply in letting the Bible interpret the Bible. Has there been trouble up the years because of the view that sunday keepers where commandment breakers who risked receiving the mark of the beast back in the 1800's. Yes, definitely has. Wasn't a nice view to have, while Evangelicals on the other side threw back that Adventist was a cult. And looks like that label has stuck still to this day at some degree. Do Adventist still hold the view that those who worship on sunday and do not keep the sabbath are not saved and can not enter God's kingdom? So far all the Adventists I've spoken to do not hold that view now in the 20's century. Mostly in the conversations the most popular view is that there a people in all churches that God can use or do use for special purposes, and also other churches that take great part in building up the kingdom. This is just an observation from a Bible Believing Christian without a Denomination, that also do keep the Sabbath at the best of his ability. (Job at a store is such a bummer, every second Saturday...Bah). Do the Adventist churches to this day deserve to be put into the category of cult? in my personal opinion, no. Neither do I think they even deserved it back at the 1800's, but I need to read more before I can come to a firm 100% conclusion about the older time Adventist church.

As a former Adventist, this video does not tell the truth about their core beliefs. Let me list a few: 1. Their REAL source of authority comes from their prophetess (EGW) and her books, collectively called The Spirit of Prophesy. They believe she's a prophet with the same pedigree as Ezekiel, Isaiah and other OT prophets. As a matter of fact, in most Adventist churches, she's the only author the pastor will quote in their preaching. if you count the number of times her name is mentioned, it will rival that of our Lord. 2. They interpret the Bible through her writings. Any other sources will be regarded as "Babylon." 3. They believe in salvation by works. The official name of that doctrine is called Investigative Judgement, of course there is NO shred of biblical evidence to support this. 4. They believe that Christians who worship on Sundays will persecute them in the end times and that if you go to church on a Sunday you are worshipping a sun god. 5. They believe that salvation is tied to the day you worship. The sad thing is that most evangelicals are on guard for the Jehovah's Witness, Mormonism and other cults but are completely clueless about Adventism. They do not consider you to be part of the body of Christ, that's why they proselytize believers AND non-believers alike! They are cults and exhibit signs of cults. Please be aware of them. Don't let their "health message" fool you. That's how they rope you in! Check out Former Adventist Fellowship.

The plants completely closed from 1 hr before sundown on Friday to 1 hr after sundown on Saturday so a HUGE magnet for SDA employees.Probably the most generous and caring company and people I have ever been associated with. My big contention with the religion is that they used Ellen G White's writings as "interpretations" of the Bible. If she said a passage meant something that was final.

Catholic here, love these videos. The SDAs have a "history" of anti-catholicism, but as far as I know it is the healthiest - a theological debate. All the SDAs I know are very warm, very lovely, most of them black actually here in the UK at least the ones I've met. It means we get on that bit better when it comes to music. Lovely to see this exchange and it's important for us to learn about each other, and, ultimately, love one another.

Most out there are very unchristian like when it comes to what they think about SDA's. The bible says you will be known by your fruits, so thank you friend for a Christ centered video of Seventh Day Adventist. I grew up in many denominations, and have to say when I choose to become an SDA, it was their uplifting of Jesus their all in all, and their uniqueness of searching the scriptures, and end time theology. (Everything must be biblically based). Another view that drew me to this church was their view that GOD has people in all the denominations, and He will judge them by the light they have received in their lifetime. I was like....that's a GOD, and church I can follow. Anyways, thanks again for the 25 mins of knowing we have brothers and sisters out there ministering by their fruits. GOD bless friend.

Love that you made this, Matt, and it’s cool seeing people’s different perspectives, too. I’m SDA and while I probably have much less of a theological background than the other guys in this video, I have interviewed a few hundred of them on Humans of Adventism. Top thing to keep in mind for anyone saying “Adventists are _____”- we’re a group of people. And like any group of people there are a lot of variations in what our priorities are and how that looks in our lifestyle. You can meet an Adventist that’s die-hard into veganism, you can meet plenty of others that see it differently. It’s more like we have pockets and subcultures (like everyone else) within the umbrella of “Seventh-day Adventist.” Even the weight and authority of people like Ellen White (excited for that discussion in your next video) varies quite a bit between individual Adventists. And since our church isn’t fully a top-down structure, that’s kind of ok. That experience changes from church to church and between subcultures for sure, but there’s a pretty big variety of people that are “Seventh-day Adventist.”

Quarterly is interesting. I'm from Georgia and mainly have gone to Southern Baptist churches. 2 of those actually only did the "Lord's Supper" (Communion) on certain holidays (Easter, Christmas, Pentecost mainly.) I even have been to one that only did it on Easter to commemorate Jesus' last meal with the disciples. Although I know it's not all Southern Baptist churches, because I know I few that do it weekly, monthly, etc. The church I attend now is just a simple by the Bible type of church. We try to follow the bible's teaching on things and try to follow what the apostles did. Typically its worship songs (usually 3 songs, almost always contemporary) Communion every Sunday, usually right before or right after the sermon, alter call (again contemporary.) Has a Baptist influence due to that being what the Pastor was familiar with before becoming a Preacher. I guess the main "Doctrinal" thing we have is a big "Come as you are" type of mindset, you can dress up if you want but no one cares if you do or don't (The Pastor even wears t-shirts and blue jeans practically every Sunday) and a heavy emphasis on serving the church and others (Not "required" but its what Jesus would do.) By the way, I love your videos Matt, especially where you tour other churches from different denominations, it really helps break the stigma that unfortunately so many Christians have where "It's my way, or the highway."

Christ is Risen! This was a very awkward video having so many people involved. I'm interested in seeing the next part. The concept of restoration churches is almost a comical one, but I'm guessing the people originally involved had never interacted with or possibly not even aware of Orthodoxy.

It's interesting. Being a catholic convert we still sing protestant hymns like how great thou art and amazing grace

Thanks for another peek beyond the doors of another church I've never been to, Matt!
