An Obituary: Mercedes-Benz W210/Chrysler LX Platform 17/7/95-22/12/23

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

With Chrysler ending the production of its W210 based (mostly) LX platform cars in December 2023, I decided to celebrate the life and work of the Mercedes-Benz W210 and W211 E Classes, Chrysler 300C, Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger with my 1997 Mercedes-Benz E230 W210. 28 years of loyalty and service has sadly come to an end, a car that has transcended 4 decades and done almost everything a car can do.

Just passed state emission test on my '01 E320. The inspector was impressed. Daily driver for 12 years, including several trips across the USA. Yes, it's a superb highway car. Why are you giving yours up?

This is misinformed drivel. The W210 has zero relation to the Chrysler LX Platform, unlike the W211 and W220. I don't know why many of you post these things, without verifying your assumptions to even be correct.

I am looking at other old Mercedes for my fleet so I thought I would give you the full deal, if you want to call my video misinformed drivel. I could easily have made a 30 minute video detailing all the similarities and differences but only proper geeks like me would watch it. It was only meant to be a short video not a long one which shows the link albeit distant from the W210 to the LX, which has become more diluted over the years. The LX platform is Chrysler platform as it isn't a complete Mercedes. The video is based on the bloodline of that platform and the earliest Mercedes it shares design and components with (which have been changed over the years) is the W210. LX Platform has W220 based front suspension. I said this for the LX platform in the video. W211 platform is an evolution of the W210 platform from the firewall back. W210 has the original 5 link rear end first seen on the W124. In the W211, this design evolved. The front end of the W211 is fundamentally different in terms of design to the W210. However, the rear end is fundamentally similar albeit with different bushings and fastenings. Instead of a bush on the lower thrust arm on the W210, the W211 has an open mount. There is also a greater curvature on the Camber strut arm of the W211. The Chrysler is a variation again on the W211's design with slightly different curvature of the rear arms. It's enough of a variation that they don't share the same suspension parts. However, its fundamentally a Daimler-Benz design. The Chrysler is based on that 5 link design in the rear and the W220 front end design but in terms of componentry it's different. They don't share OE numbers and there are slight differences from car to car. Design is fundamentally similar just tweaked enough for it to be different from the W220 on the front and the W124/W210/W211 on the rear. W212 also has a 5 link suspension design but it is much further away from both the W211 and the W210. As the LX platform has been revised, it has gone further from its Mercedes origins in terms of suspension, electrics and systems. LX platform cars originally used Mercedes ABS/ESP pump modules first seen on higher end W210s, from 1998 onwards. Electrical components on the Chrysler originally came from the Mercedes parts bin and evolved after the companies split. Transmission on the original LX cars is the same 5 speed 722.6 debuted on the W210 that is present in the earlier LX cars and Police Specification vehicles. This is why I said W210 over W124 platform. W124 debuted original 5 link design but doesn't have any other relation to the 300C. The Chrysler moved away from this with the addition of the newer ZF 8 speed gearbox in 2011 but this stayed in police specification vehicles until 2021 (I was wrong there) when they got the 8 speed box. There have been significant changes from the W210 to the most recent iteration of the LX platform, I say that on the video, it moved further away from its origins as the years progressed. As the Daimler link left after 2007, the Chrysler shared less and less with Mercedes-Benz vehicles and more with Fiat Group Vehicles in terms of systems and componentry. However, the video was discussing that ancestry of cars using that platform. The W124 debuted the original design of the suspension system, but doesn't share anything with the 300C. The W210 is the first generation Mercedes to share componentry and design with the Chrysler LX cars, which the LX further shares with the W211 so that is why I consider the W210 the first car to have the ancestry link to the LX platform. The blood line is why I did the video. W210 was the first Mercedes to share components and designs with the Chrysler but very few Mercedes parts remain on the final LX cars.

@@turn6garage640 I don't know what's wrong with Google alerts. I'm no longer getting alerted on comment responses much of the last 9 months, being that this is one of the best comments I have seen in relation to this model nameplate. If not best! I wish your comment could be pinned everywhere. So well written and serious respect for you. Thank you for taking time to even do so. I totally understand if you didn't want to be overly lengthy and point very well taken on how the W211 is an evolution of the W210. That's the loophole in this argument, everyone sidesteps in our efforts to prove the LX isn't a 90s derived relic. The W211 wasn't a huge leap from W210, so your argument is reasonable.
