An Iowa Mom Makes Laundry Soap

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Making ten gallons of quality laundry soap for less than $2 seems too good to be true, but here it is. This video shows how to make soap for dark clothes and a stronger version for light and white clothes which also works very well as a spot treatment. Don't miss the few seconds of silliness at the beginning... "As the Squirrel Turns." :)
The Cost per gallon of laundry soap is:
...about 10 cents a gallon to make the basic Zote soap for dark clothes
...about 15 cents a gallon to make Zote soap with borax to wash whites and light colors
...about 19 cents a gallon for the Zote soap with borax and adding Super Washing Soda for a load of super dirty clothes.

    I have seen some posts that give scents you can add if you want. Google is awesome with such ideas. I haven't use them because some folks are sensitive to fragrance. This recipe just gets clothes clean and odor free.

    If you do not have a water softener, you may add the borax as shown in the video for ALL loads. It does soften water. We have a softener so I don't use it for darks because I don't want any of the ingredients (which is found in most laundry detergents) that can take away ANY color. I used to use special "TIDE for darks." BTW I have used this home made laundry soap for more than 3 years and continue to be pleased with the results. I do garden, so dirt is a part of my life. LOL.

    I spilled a little on my granite counter top and let me tell you it makes it shine. All I do now is use a wet paper towel with about a pea size of the soap and it shines it better than the products made to do that.

    Been looking but don't see just how much of this you use per load. I've made some before (think it was ivory soap I used) and I used about 1/2 cup per load. Is this the same?

  • @miastuff7540

    @miastuff7540

    @Mawmaw Sue I have made soap in the past and there is a process you go through mixing lye water and oils. Soap goes through the saponification process, converting fats, oils, lye, and water into soap and glycerin. After this happens the lye and oils turn into soap (chemical process) so there aren't any "oils" left in the mixture. After the chemical process has completed, the soap is completely safe and gentle on skin and clothes. As long as you balance the lye and oils the soaps are not harsh as when our great grandmothers made it. In your case where you found your whites had not gotten as clean as you wanted perhaps adding some borax (as shown in the film) might help with that.

    Quick question, Is zote soap safe for septic systems?

  • @IowaMom

    @IowaMom

    4 жыл бұрын

    Good question. We have septic system and have used this soup for about three years. We don't even use antiseptic hand soup so this is an important issue to us. Since the pink and blue zote has brightners (which i don't know would be a problem or not) I only use the white just to be on the safe side.

    My question is how to make this to make a lot of suds. I feel that the suds is what actually washes the clothes.

  • @IowaMom

    @IowaMom

    7 жыл бұрын

    I know it may seem that way, but proof is in the results. It really cleans and high suds will not even work in the new High Efficiency machines. The lack of suds will also help to avoid the residue left behind with high suds type detergents. Hope this helps.

  • @Tonithenightowl

    @Tonithenightowl

    joann you don't want bubbles in any washing machine. Bubbles don't actually do any cleaning and especially in washers bc it will overflow with bubbles from the agitation. Also harder to get a clean rinse. Zote can be used for dishes as well but there won't be bubbles, the water will feel clean and it will clean your dishes without suds and less rinsing.

    Suds gives the illusion of cleanliness. Basic soap have a low suds, higher suds just make it harder to rinse out and leaves unwanted residue on your clothes.

    No water softeners? I see what looks like a box of borax sitting nearby. Good luck preventing accumulation of soap scum with this concoction! I doubt you understand why borax or washing soda are needed...

  • @IowaMom

    As I show in the video, I only add a little of the borax in my whites and light colors. The ingredient lists I find online show the Zote bar used in the concoction are basically Sodium tallowate (beef tallow) & Sodium Cocoate (coconut oil). I've been using this for over 2 years and it has done a great job. As to soap scum, I haven't had a problem however you can use the bleach treatment for your washing machine as you would ANY detergent. I used Tide back when I did the Iowa Mom video on "The Stinky Washing Machine. I haven't had to use that but once since using the zote detergent. Hope this helps.

  • @FrankGutowski-ls8jt

    @FrankGutowski-ls8jt

    5 жыл бұрын

    Right. Most bar soaps originate with beef fat, because tallow is a cheap source of fatty acids. Sodium salts of fatty acids derived from coconut oil are added to bar soaps because consumers equate foam with efficacy. They produce a very hard soap, which some people think is too harsh or drying to the skin. Dissolving bar soap in hot water does not transform it into a detergent. Soaps and detergents are both surfactants, but differ chemically. Soaps are far more susceptible to depositing scum in hard water than detergents. Borax is an old fashioned, not very effective alkaline water softener. It’s 47% water by weight. It’s not a bleach or optical brightener.

    Clueless housewife logic. Lady, do you realize how ridiculously dilute this is? One bar of soap makes 10 gals! Yes, 10 gal of very dilute soapy water! Let me share with viewers how many ounces of soap ends up being used per load...I use grade school arithmetic, as follows: 10 gal = 160 cups. 1/2 cup cup per load. 320 loads. 7 oz of soap/320 = 0.02 oz/load, less than half the weight of a paper clip’s 0.05 oz. Plain water works as well.
