An Introduction to Rhapsody (The Royal Ballet)

Ойын-сауық

Rhapsody was created in 1980 and is one of Frederick Ashton’s final works - a virtuoso conclusion to his series of non-narrative ballets.

It was created on acclaimed Russian dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, who requested the Ashton commission and whose personality is at the heart of the work. The male Principal role is characterized by exceptionally fluent leaps, turns and lightness of movement. It is twinned with the strength and grace of the ballerina, a role created on the pure, fleet-footed style of former Royal Ballet Principal Lesley Collier.
The ballet is set to Sergey Rachmaninoff’s well-known Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, which moves from stormy passages to calmer interludes. The premiere of Rhapsody was given at the Royal Opera House in honour of Ashton’s close friend Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, on the occasion of her 80th birthday.

The music of Rhapshody on a Theme from Paganini is so beautiful. It's one of my favorite pieces of all time. Ashton's chorography is such a special match to it.

I adore the choreography. Althought i can agree with those who say that Osipova has no grace, femininity and is always out of style. I still don't understand why she's a part of Royal Ballet. Tricksters over artists?..

Personally I wasn't impressed, Osipova was completely out of the role, the only thing you can say is that she was fast, but maybe it was a race of spins? She has no grace, no delicacy and is the same for all her roles, regardless of whether the protagonist is the ethereal Giselle or the passionate Kitri. The comparison with the performance of Yuhui Choe and the beautiful Francesca Hayward is almost embarrassing!

+Cat Benson When I saw her a few years ago, in the Bolshoi's DON Q, shown in cinema, I adored her; she and the role fit perfectly, and the entire production and cast were great. Later I saw her in GISELLE with the Bolshoi (also in cinema, but in 3-D; yuck), and didn't care for her interpretation or for the production generally. I sure would love to see her perform in person. I suspect I'd feel as you do; she doesn't seem to be the greatest actress, though she's awfully impressive, technically.

Fully agree with you. She is a terrible actress and has this rare gift to vulgarize everything she touches.

I wouldn't be quite so harsh to say that she vulgarises everything but I agree that she lacks the grace that other RB principals seem to articulate so well! I do admit that her technique (those jumps!) is amazing though!

Perhaps a little harsh? Her technique is fierce but she does tend to struggle a bit on the dramatic side. I give her much credit for taking on core Ashton and MacMillan repertoire at the Royal Ballet which will inevitably be quite alien to her training. She was excellent in Anastasia and Mayerling (MacMillan) and equally good in a Month in the Country (Ashton). That said, Hayward and Hay were the better pairing in Rhapsody.
