An Introduction to RBY OU | RBY Bytes
Ойындар
Among the oldest Smogon tiers and the progenitor of what would become a competitive phenomenon, many have tried and failed to get into Gen 1. It's a bit of an esoteric tier, so hopefully, my own eccentrism can help demystify it for the newbies! Hop in as we explore Pokemon's most interesting metagame!

To give perspective on how old the community is: When I first played RBY OU I was in 7th grade on Pokemon Netbattle, which was pre-slam era and hipmonlee was still fairly active and known as the old guard. That was 18 years ago, and I'm 31 now.

I never played in a tournament (well, I signed up for one and then ADHDed and missed my deadline to play haha) but I would play random matches on Porygon's Big Show around 2000. Back then there was the understanding that using Mewtwo + Mew was a different game than not using them, but the matchmaking service didn't differentiate (and for that matter had no legality checks at all-my sister would lead with Spore Tauros lol) so you'd be trying to play what we'd now call OU and then suddenly a Mewtwo would appear. The good ol' wild west. It was fun though and I think even experienced players don't know just how much they have to unlearn to properly put themselves in the mindset of late-90s and early-2000s online Pokémon

"Slowbro's greatest enemy is God itself" is a hell of a sentence.
game's all about making your tree explode at the best possible time.
Kind of funny to think about the current Big Three as, back in the 2K10 days, Tauros and Chansey were ubiquitous, but Snorlax was not. Exeggutor was used more frequently than him, I remember. Did this change because of the 2014 revelation that Body Slam couldn't paralyze normal types, the same thing that sent Golem spiraling down the viability chart?
@PlaguevonKarma
Жыл бұрын
Most likely! Reflect Snorlax not being possible to paralyse with Body Slam changed a toooon for it. It's the best way to stave off paraslams. I do remember WaterWizard arguing Egg was #1 at one point during 2k10 and that made me go "whoaaa". It was near-mandatory for a verrrrry long time.
Slowbro is almost entirely kept in check by the high Crit rates of Thunderbolt users. The crit rates are high enough that it Slowbro will often taken irreversible damage.

I've considered doing individual history videos on important figures in RBY history but it's also a bit difficult. I'd want to do the following: - Seek them out - Interview the player - Chronologically go over their tournament wins and stuff they used Things like that. But it's also concerning about feeding into biases, ego, or inadvertently platforming someone harmful. If you're interested in Wintermute, though, the TobyBro video I did would sum that one up.

Honestly the biggest takeaway Is don’t get mad when something unlucky happens. Just take a step back and ask yourself what does this change about the current situation and if I’m now at a disadvantage what are my outs. I’ve won games with 2 mons and the opponent having most their team and one of their mons was a gengar and I was needing to rely on Persian to clean up after losing mons to crits and whatnot. You can salvage some very bleak game states if you just keep calm. You aren’t the only one who can get unlucky. The game states at rby can change rapidly from hopeless to suddenly advantaged but you need to play to your outs. If you give up when you lose tauros to a crit from their tauros with minimal damage on it you won’t get that crit with your starmie that could save you. Likewise don’t get cocky just cuz you have a Mon lead that can just change very quickly
this video was INSANELY good
Gen 1's so weird because some things, like Tauros and Exeggutor, abused the construction of the games with all of its design choices (and also bugs) to become godly in their respective uses, but then there are the pokemon that were made well from the start even apart from the generation, leading to threats like Zapdos and Starmie that have ALWAYS been relevant because they're just so cool and good. It makes you almost feel bad, because the pokemon that fell off after a few generations had such a good showing to start and the fans of Exeggutor are basically starving so why should Starmie fans get to eat?
@PlaguevonKarma

I was hoping Alolan Exeggutor could do something but all it did was shift the same issues to a different area. Very depressing...
@imaginaryboy2000

@@PlaguevonKarma My favorite thing I ever did with it was Z-Sunny Day Chlorophyll Exeggutor. It wasn't very good, but it turned it from a low-tier with basically no niche to a low-tier Solarbeam sweeper that would almost always move first, which was all I needed it to do. Such a cool mon despite all its flaws.
I find rhydon to be interesting one as so many blizzard and special attacks feel like it make it hell but I feel (with the little I know) rhydon seems to remove a lot of headaches that would be there if you had to worry about zapdos (though I’m sure there are more clever ways around it). Also having a strong physical attack does make it very spooky. I kind of like it for that reason as it feels like it can cover a weakness in team building while gives utility like swapping in on a hyper beam.
I like using Rhydon and Zapdos on the same team sometimes which either leaves me without Snorlax or without Starmie and with Eggy as my only sleeper. I do this because I'm an idiot. It actually works sometimes because RBY is just so chaotic. Doing this actually does force you to figure out how versatile Rhydon actually is, basically nothing can set up on the rock, but his Achilles special lets him down a lot. I find slightly more success actually going without Snorlax and using Starmie, Chansey, and Zapdos as a triple thunder wave threat to give Rhydon the go ahead to switch in on a physical move and rip a giant hole through the team, though I might just be coping and simply enjoy those matches more. I do not recommend forgoing Snorlax or Starmie. It is a struggle. They are at the top of the tier list for a reason.
@PlaguevonKarma
Жыл бұрын
It's really really hard to justify this team comp. I tried it in the past, but the problem is there's zero synergy between Zapdos and Rhydon bar paralysis. I think you could probably squeeze Exeggutor on but then you're extremely lacking in Recover users, it gets really hairy. It wants to slowly paralyse everything, but in doing so, it loses to opposing Rhydon teams (just beats Zapdos and Rhydon comes down to a speed tie), and doesn't have a grind game. I wish it worked, I really do...
@NiGHTSnoob

@@PlaguevonKarma Yeah, like I said I am A) An idiot, and B) Usually cut Snorlax which is a terrible idea and you should never ever do. The only reason the team functions at all is because Rhydon and Zapdos both have absolutely nuclear attacking stats. If they didn't it would be completely dead in the water instead of mostly terrible.

I am very new to OU and have been using the Big 3 + Little 3 team exclusively. I like the simplicity of t1 twave but I often end up paralyzing a chansey switch and then i have a very hard time making progress. I've experimented with Blizzard and switching in my Chansey/Lax, but is it worth it to switch into Eggy against a twave lead? It seems like a riskier play against a Starmie due to Blizzard but against a lot of others situations ive encountered i feel like the risk would be minimal in exchange for putting something to sleep right away. Eggy is probably the mon i end up making the least use out of because sleep gets blocked and/or I dont see a good chance to blow up :/

The Slammer, a classic British show!
Noob here, fun video
People use Poliwrath over Slowbro for a few reasons. Poliwrath can set up amnesia with less para support because of hypnosis and his higher speed, and he can run submission to win when they inevitably bring in Chansey. Submission has a good shot of 3 hitting chansey thru reflect, and 2 hits guaranteed, 1 hit with crit. The downside is, well the obvious. Weak to Psychic, and reliant on Hypnosis and Submission is less than ideal. RBY very commonly does this tho, the OU staples do something well, and then the UU pokes do almost the same thing slightly worse, but with a unique niche. In terms of Amnesia users (besides Mewtwo) Slowbro is the all around best, but only hits on the special side and tends to loose straight up against chansey if not fully set up. Snorlax can mixed attack, but is also slow. Poliwrath is faster, can also mixed attack, and can actually take advantage of hypnosis and submission, being the single best user of submission in the game, even though its considered a trash move. Golduck is also mostly special attacking, but because hes the fastest he can run amnesia with Rest, Blizzard and Surf, or sub in Hyper Beam to catch walls off guard. The best part about RBY OU is knowing where the UU mons are useful.
@PlaguevonKarma
10 ай бұрын
You missed out Poliwrath's most important part: It gets Hydro Pump, Slowbro doesn't. Poliwrath does not need to commit to setup as much because of this, it's the biggest niche it has.

Is anyone able to explain why it's standard for Starmie and Tauros to use Blizzard instead of Ice beam and why Chansey uses Ice beam instead of Blizzard. Why not just have everyone running the same move ice move?
@PlaguevonKarma
7 ай бұрын
Tauros and Starmie use Blizzard because they're often a bit more offensive in nature. Starmie can be used defensively game-to-game, but it's not usually enough to warrant using Ice Beam. It does happen if you want to freeze something, but that's why you have Chansey. Chansey continually swaps into attacks throughout the game and uses Ice Beam to freeze other Chansey. Depleting all its PP, you have a ~82% chance to succeed here. In general, Chansey often *does* run out of PP, because it has to keep swapping in and out, and sometimes chipping opposing Pokemon into Tauros range. We don't have uniformity because there's legitimate practical reason to choose otherwise.
