I’m so happy you’re making videos about this. I’m a light skinned black girl who benefits from colorism/texturism and because of this, I always felt insecure about having a big nose. I felt like I was “supposed” to have a small nose because of my skin color. Recently I’ve embraced it more, but it’s challenging because I’ve always desired a smaller nose.

This is also why I like celebrities like Saweetie/Rihanna, they have (some) features similar to mine and I feel like they remind me of myself. My brother also compares me to Cardi B.

And don’t worry because there are lots of women with broad features who are considered gorgeous I listed them in the video and I even made a video about it a couple years ago. I will not allow myself to have internalized anti blackness when it comes to features. I believe any ethnic features can be beautiful. That’s also why I do not promote the golden ratio on this channel because the deeper you get into it the more it “prefers” women like Bella hadid over women like Beyoncé for example .

This featurism thing used to be a MAJOR source of insecurity for me when I was younger. I fully internalized the more Eurocentric features that were universally praised and definitely pedestalized in the black community and therefore did not think I was pretty bc my features are more broad. Even tho ppl would always tell me I was pretty I had a very hard time believing them bc of my own internalized featurism.

I have been *othered* because of my small straigth nose, medium-sized lips, thick eyebrows and caramel skin. My doe eyes are also common among different ethnicities. Some Indians thought I was one of them when my natural hair was slicked back. When my parents and I recently visited Zambia, Africa, they knew we are foreigners and Russians living there thought we were Egyptians or Horn Africans (we are cubans). My face is smal and I've always had long highly densed type 4a hair (with some 3c sections) since I was a child. My mom always took care of it until I learned from the natural hair movement, online, at 13.

other features i’ve noticed others pedastalized or show up more in mixed raced people are: 1. if you’ve ever noticed Disney Pocahontas’s lips and how they are full, but they sit on her face as opposed to kind of stick out, i’ve noticed big lips with more of that bow shape are pedastalized 2. face shape. a lot of mixed people have the smaller chin that you mentioned but also a more defined jaw and higher set cheekbones. i’ve noticed a lot of uab ppl have a less defined face shape and the features will take up most of their face vs smaller features in the middle of a wider set face shape which is more pedastalized. i’ve also noticed a lot of uab ppl having more lower set cheek bones. 3. noses. i honestly feel like nose size isn’t the make or break feature in comparison to the barbie shape you mentioned or just having a longer defined nose bridge and smaller/hooked/or less noticeable nostils and usually a more defined tip. 4. facial development. i feel like i’ve noticed just having good dental facial development is pedastalized in all communities, same with facial neoteny, sexual dimorphism, and the pixie/fairy✨ features you mentioned, which plays into a lot of these tbh studying facial growth, features, and beauty is one of my hobbies and i’ve honestly noticed a few more little details but i’m going to keep it short 😭

  • @ExoticalsUnited

Yes ! I didn’t know what word to use for facial shape but I’ve noticed any sort of “non African” facial shape grants exoticism in the black community. The only people who see me as an East African are the people who come from countries in the region or have lived there. And I get it, it's easy to recognize someone when they have familiar traits with what you've seen. Anyone else (black and white people especially) usually tells me that I can't be anything other than mixed because of my features, my body type, and my hair texture. It was funny when I was young sometimes, it's exhausting to be a topic of conversation (most of the time in a negative way) because I have a different appearance than the "stereotype" of a black woman. Ps: I also had rude comments about looking like a starving Somali who didn't receive their rice portion and I am sorry that you got this comment too 😤☹️ Thank you for making me feel at ease about looking different ❤

I don’t really comment on videos as much although you raised some good talking points some of them I really agree with. I think the notification of looking at featurism as some race groups have an advantage over others is more so important in Hollywood as opposed to real life. Beauty in Hollywood matters. Eurocentric features are favoured a lot more in that space compared to non- Eurocentric features. The women who look “closer to white” or “exotic” make make more money than those who don’t. That’s just the standard of beauty in that space. In real life, I don’t think featurism matters heck I didn’t even know the word existed until a couple of years back I think it’s a term that UABW have created to project there insecurities to others as well as the term colourism. I personally think it’s a myth. In real life if we look at the statistics in the UK (which is where I live) the race group that is actually benefiting economically, socially and educationally aren’t actually “mixed race people” it’s Asians particularly from Chinese and Indian descent. I think that’s a similar stance in America - you can correct me if I am wrong. It’s gotten to the point here now in the Uk they are outdoing white (indigenous) people in the Isles. Horn Africans aren’t the most successful community here in the Uk and Europe by in Large. Although we regard them to be “conventionally beautiful” in the black community. Most of them in the UK live in social housing in the roughest neighbourhoods. I think UABW are fighting the wrong people we should be pushing to be more like Asians there are successful in everything they have a strong community and very good values and morals. Crying about who has a better nose and curlier hair is ridiculous and a waste of time if you ask me.

Featurism is under desirability politics, it is not about class, same with colourism. Basically, you get more positive interactions from a significant set of people but it is not very significant beyond, so low impact on class mobility. Many things in life are privileges, getting nitty gritty is just smoke in the eyes so you do not focus on the billionaires funding wars and feeding into making persons impoverished.

On twitter yrs ago people were calling LisaRaye colorist and they said she was only considered beautiful because she was light with light eyes, then a Black man photoshopped her dark and everyone agreed she was still beautiful. They did it to Rihanna too because they tried to say she wasn't pretty either.

Omg I’ve been told I look like micheal Jackson before too 😂😂😂 I think it was because of my hair and skin combo, my hair can look like a Jheri curl or something but I do not actually look like Michael Jackson and I am not that pale

I remember seeing this twitter thread basically it was this guy (not trying to be disrespectful I guess but he was a black male who was trying to appear as a woman…anyway) basically there’s this dark skin KZreadr she’s African she has a small button nose not usual “African” looking features and basically was acting like a jealous male (as usual) calling her features Eurocentric,African people are one of the most diverse people meaning we can have ANY FEATURE as a darskin girl my nose isn’t a typical flat or big nose it is what it is,but featurism (I can’t spell💀) is a b,especially when people act jealous all the time.
