Death grips concert veteran here. They are insane and they do put everything into their performances. Not even talking about the crazy shit they do. You can tell they care because they didnt stop playing music, they were dedicated to maintaining a constant flow of entertainment. It was an hour and a half of constantly being noided. Thats what i tell people about when i talk about that experience. It blew me away the most.

I bought tickets to a show just to experience them earlier this year and forced myself to listen to YOTS. Buy the third playthrough I was hooked. And then came the love for Bottomless Pit, No Love, Gov Plates etc

You don’t have to be. All it takes is being OK with music to touch you in places that you maybe uncomfortable with. just allow it to take you to a place you’ve never been. This not just with deathgrips. This is with any band that puts emotion into their music. Death grips is like a horror movie of music.

If you're more for a more pop-centric experience but with a similar level of experimentation, I recommend SOPHIE. Her music is more pop/avant-garde, but her songs Not Okay, Whole New World/Pretend World, Ponyboy, Faceshopping or L.O.V.E. are more on the more Industrial/death grips-y side.

I actually really like "Hot Head". The song is genius because it's totally nonsensical at first but then becomes this awesome and totally chill reggae song. You have to sit through the "Bla bla bla bla, Oh no" chops to get to the good part. That's exactly what the album "Bottomless Pit" is all about. It's like a pile of garbage that has gems in it. That's the best way to describe it, really.

This was a really incredible intro to Death Grips. I have to say though, I find the More Than The Fairy video the most unsettling. Something about Ride's low growl, Les' frantic bass riffing, and the flashing banana on a cord all combine to make the perfect fever dream. I'm definitely subbing. Glad I stumbled across this.

You know, I think it’s interesting: Most folks I’ve met who come to Death Grips from a hip-hop background find them overwhelming or maybe a bit too intense at first, before eventually coming around. On the other hand, noise/experimental, metal, and punk folks I know have seemed pretty open to them at first. They might sound FANTASTIC, but not necessarily shocking or particularly intense, at least from what I’ve encountered, to those audiences.

yeeboii I think the way they’ve merged hip hop and noise/industrial and metal and all of that was definitely new ground, but I also don’t think it’s on some new frontier of abrasiveness or intensity (except in hip hop). It’s just really damn good at being what it is.

I love most of DG’s discography and totally appreciate the love you’re giving them. I think you can dig deeper in this intro to the band in my personal opinion, too. Obviously it’s not for everyone, but I think there’s more to be said about each member and the genre as a whole. A deeper dive into the lyrics and mixing too, I think could show more people of their artistry- in a way that I think would be more effective than naming 5ish aesthetic choices in their music videos, but it’s just an opinion!

I am so torn because I recently discovered "I've seen fottage" and I can't stop listening to it. I've listened to their other songs multiple times now but I just can't make it work for me. It's not that I dislike the mostly chaotic tracks but there is just this drive missing that "I've seenfottage" gives me. I dunno if this makes any sense tho...

I became a fan pretty much on the spot at a death grips concert. My friends were into them and I had heard a few songs and thought they were a bit too much so just never got into it. Well I got a bit of fomo and had money left over so I went and saw them with my friends anyway. I was blown away. I have been to over 100 concerts with mostly rock and metal artists at that point and I had never seen anything like death grips. I've never seen an audience go so fucking hard. It was amazing. Amazing energy. A dude broke his arm in the moshpit even. Theyre giving slayer concerts a run for their money. And the audience was so diverse tastewise. Metalheads, punkrockers, hip hop dudes, hipster kids, you name it. After that I was hooked and could not stop listening. Everyone should give death grips an honest try.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Death Grips. The music is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the lyrics will go over a typical listeners head. There’s also MC Rides’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realise that they’re not just angery- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Death Grips truly ARE idiots.
