Loved it Jack!! Never heard of your saxophone but i bet it is a treasure. Also your music education was interesting . The type of warm up exercises was also educational. I feel like I know you a little better thanks to Steve's excellent Questions. Wayne Pharo

I relate strongly to the comment Jack makes about playing a hard set up and being less sensitive. I find the same. I find when I don’t practice I play harder setups, because I stop being sensitive to the minor changes. I never hear anyone else mention that.

Very interesting thanks for sharing this! This could be related to tip opening as well. I know that on a 9 opening no matter what when I use a harder reed that is going to equal a lot more resistance so doing that with a weaker embochure sounds like a nightmare 😅 Would definitely be curious to try your setup - what are you playing on Ben?

@@SaxophoneSteveKortyka Currently on a Gabriel Vatavu M2 8* (Gabe is a local repairer and mouthpiece maker in Brisbane Australia) with BSS black box 3. Last time I took a few weeks off the horn the 3s felt too uncontrollable and flexible, so I went up to 3.5s - this let me forget about my embouchure and just dump air down the horn. Once I got back into a somewhat regular practice routine I found myself looking for more flexibility again, so I moved back down to 3s.

That’s a great interview guys! So I now discover that there are many strings to Jack Tyler’s bow. And he also designed the awesome Heritage Sax Necks!

This was a great behind the curtain interview, Steve. I’ve often wondered how Jack sounds as a player, he sounded great on gay clip. Thanks, man.

Sure thing Kirk. He would have been gigging with the best players if he decided to focus on just playing. A true badass 🔥

This resonates with me on so many levels! Repair shop owner, OH ties. Kim Pensyl fan. Practice time has gone from 5+ hrs/day to 5 hrs/mo. Great interview. I'm going to start using that long tone warm-up. Thanks Steve and Jack.

Steve - I’m an intermediate player w/o formal training. Can I buy a solid practice plan from you, if available. You and so many others - wow me big time. Neil

Thanks Neil! Thanks for reaching out - I have a routine system on my website at members-stevekortyka.com that you can/should check out. I can help give you some fundamental things to work on and add to your practice routine. Do you read music at all? A lot of my training is really augmented by the ability to read music and understand theoretical concepts but it isn't necessary. Check out the R.I.S. course at members-stevekortyka.com when you get a chance and let me know how that works for you.
