An Interview with: Berton Pierce

Фильм және анимация

JP has a nice chat with director/editor/writer/modelmaker and all round great guy Berton Pierce to talk to him about the making of his excellent 'Sense of Scale' documentary, a film all about the golden age of model miniatures used in TV and film. We also talk about his views on the current state of the industry, as well as his own personal film projects.
Berton was a commercial director from 1992 until 2005. In that time he directed 70 commercials for various clients in Europe like Sony Handicams, Lycos, DWS Deutsche Bank, Mövenpick Ice Cream, GQ Magazine, OTTO fashion catalogue, Tchibo coffee, Galeria Kaufhoff. In 2012 he directed the documentary, SENSE OF SCALE about movie model makers and how CGI is replacing practical effects in films, which is now available to freely view in its entirety on KZread in chapter form.
Huge thanks to Berton to allow extracts from his documentary and other work to be included into this interview.

As a CG guy who is getting little by little into practical effects, I think modelmaking will get a rather huge renaissance as a countermovement to the advent of AI. People just love the handmade aspects of it. Great interview and Berton Piece's contribution to the modelmaking community cannot be praised enough.

Pierce Film Productions' _Sense of Scale_ inspired me to use miniatures for my future filmmaking! His KZread channel is wonderful! Excellent interview! InCamera is an inspiration, as well!

As a young (38) filmmaker, I have to tell you this is some of the single most important information to me! I can’t say yet but I’m developing something that will utilize these old techniques and have already established some old school model makers for this. Thanks for being a huge inspiration!

Thanks for a fun and informative video. 7:40 The scale of that model of a chunk of a Star Destroyer's bridge is really eye-opening.

Was one of the last buyers of the doc's DVD release on Amazon, and consider it one of my collection's pride-and-joys. An excellent, sprawling retrospective on one of the toughest yet most exciting gigs in filmmaking. The clips shared on his channel are a true treasure trove of film history.

To some the unknown stuntman was the unsung hero of film & tv, but to me and my brother Berton & the wonderful talent he interviews are those 'unknown heroes'

it's that dearth of scale model work that's pushing me more and more into pursuing prop/set dressing gizmos building.

Berton Pierce is a *legend* for doing that documentary, and then making it all available available on the channel as well … Legend+ indeed - Thanks for doing this interview with him, and thanks for being legends as well carrying the miniature torch on this channel, great inspiration for people like me who grew up with this stuff but never had the knowledge, means and time to do anything about it before, but now is slowly starting to get into it now that the kid is out of the house ;)

A very interesting interview, in the film I'm currently shooting I also use miniature effects (and I to do as much in camera as possible) coroma key but no CGI.

I don't think so. But some of the older FX guys must have fun stories about the Godzilla movies from the 80's etc.

I have a 00 scale British Model Railway and try to scratch build whatever I can. I was a Draughtsman and guess that was helpful. I would like to learn how to take photos of structures and scale them down so I can print tgem out. Looking forward to learning anything and everything 👍📐🖊
