So my point on not doing this is that restricting what you add to the confines of the interior of an Altoids tin is a big part of using one. It makes you think very carefully about every item you add to the tin and the return you will get for the size and weight of each item. By adding additional storage to the exterior, your tin turns into something else. I'm really curious to hear what others think about the purpose of the EDC Altoids tin...

That is my problem, I always have more than fits anything! It all depends on how necessary it is for something to fit somewhere, and if I can find a substitute otherwise I add storage if I think it is pretty important to have. Sometimes there is just no compromise, or solution! Oh my...

I use Ranger bands that I made myself. It holds the lid down. It’s a combustible source so I can use it to make fire if I need to. Plus all the other uses for Ranger bands. I can seal around the seam (lid and hinges) to make it waterproof as well, plus the added benefit of it not sliding around in my pocket or pack. One last thought, I make my ranger bands from used bicycle tires that you can get just by going into REI or Cabela’s or a bike shop and asking for them. I don’t recommend just digging through a dumpster because well that draws unwanted attention.

Thanks for sharing your ideas Frank, I’ve actually tested ranger bands. They work, but I found it difficult to cut the bicycle tubes to the width that is necessary to fit the pocket racks that I’m currently using. If I redesigned them , I’m sure they would be fine. You could easily build a custom pocket rack that would use ranger bands to fit your edc requirements. The last video I posted.kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGhouqNsks_Riqw.html has a link in the description to a pdf containing some helpful resources for making a rack, if you want to give it a try. Ill stick to my own kits. Been making kits for about 55 years now. Mine work, plus when folks are curious, i actually show kit to them. Not just tell them about it and not show. But contrary to a lot of folks, mine don't give instant salvation. That stuff is in pockets. My little belt kit allows me the means to create whatever tools, shelter, water system. ,food capability, Nav, and very basic first aid. Primary knife for my kit is victorinox Huntsman, improved. Bit in heavy forest where i live, i usually take about 5 or 6 various bladed tools, and, add water filter, bedroll, and chow/cook pouch to my harness. Lighter set up than a standard pack. Works for me, might not for someone else. Safe Travels.

@johnnyqd6861 - You are entirely correct. I did build it out, but not for me to use. It was built to illustrate the point that restricting what you add to the confines of the interior of an Altoids tin is a big part of using one. That mental exercise in deciding what to include makes you think very carefully about every item you add to the tin and the return you will get for the size and weight of each item. By adding additional storage in the form of drawers to the exterior, your tin turns into something else. You might as well have an EDC pouch or a bigger tin. So for me, I would not add drawers. This short has been viewed over 100,000 times since it was published less than a year ago. The question I get asked most frequently when it was first published was how do you add the drawers? I ended up making a video to show how it was done. See: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lXmtqpiQksrTnrg.html Thank you for your post.

The tins from County Comm may be a tad bigger, so that's one solution. Otherwise, I'd take something out and/or replace it with a like product that is smaller, if possible. I'm not a fan of putting ranger bans or rubber bands around the tin to hold it close, as it the bands make the tin drag on your pockets if you pocket carry the tin. I have a couple types of pouches, I carry my tins in and the rubber bands prevent the tin, fitting properly in those pouches: leather and kydex.

Try to rearrange first, plus go back over contents for overkill. When that happened to me, i did the above-mentioned (duh), and held it closed asi.ply wrapped more electrical tape over the lid/body seal.. would not add tin that would end up being prone to have small tins slide open and not notice. First time kit is used , insides will shoft around anyway. open,

Take some items out and figure out how you can replace them with more multi-purpose items. If you can’t do that then see if you can just wear some of those items on a keychain or another accessory. If you can’t do that then just get another tin. If you can’t do that then you need to reevaluate your life.

It does not translate very well into use as a frequently used EDC tool kit, although some folks may use it for that purpose.
