I've been using the L-12 for my live synth sessions on KZread and for shows for the past 2 years now and it's been amazing and a lot of fun to use. For live shows I was switching scenes for different mixes in-between songs, but I stopped doing that because it pauses the audio while switches between saves and gets kind of annoying. But yeah, so great for KZread where I just record everything to the SD card and then sync the audio to my video footage. I have 8 DSI / Sequential synths hooked up to it and I only run short on inputs if I use individual outs from my Tempest, but that's an easy work around. However, major problem happened last week... my Livetrak L-12 blew up!!! Crazy stuff! I was just connecting the XLR cables from the Master Out to my KRK studio monitors and out of nowhere a huge fireworks show went off from the mixer. It's totally fried and the boards and ribbon cables inside are all charred up and frayed. I contacted Zoom about it, sent them photos and they told me to send it in for a new one, free of charge. They said they've never heard of that happening before. Either way, total bummer since I was in the middle of making a new KZread video to show the new Firmware update for my DSI - OB-6 and I'll be without a mixer for a while, but so rad that Zoom is taking care of the situation and sending me a new unit. But yeah, I also totally recommend it for synth users who don't use a computer. I did the quick mod of using the headphone jacks for aux effects on my Strymon Big Sky and it works great, just takes a little finesse to get that dialed in right.

looks like a good option in its price range, many useful features. last year i was in the market for a 12-16 ch mixer for synthesizer studio to expand the track count beyond the 8 of my apollo interface. after much shopping around and researching i had the roland vm3100 on my shortlist and managed to pick up one up in mint condition for just $100. there really are some amazing deals to be found on both the new and used mixer market. thanks for your initial thoughts on this piece of gear, was a good watch.

For a while, I went the way of getting an 8-channel firewire audio interface (Mackie Onyx Blackbird). It worked well, but ended up being so much more work to actually use than a mixer that I went back to a mixer-based setup. Now I'm using a 2-channel audio interface for recording and a Mackie 1642 vlz4. Works pretty dang well, though it takes up a lot of space. I am able to get a very clean signal with a very large dynamic range, though, so it's been very nice. Edit: tight! I used a two-channel Zoom handheld mic for a very long time before I decided to step up to more than two channels. It was able to make some incredibly impressive field recordings, makes me want to get back into that. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Those multiple headphone outs seem like an extremely powerful tool, that's up to 10 total outputs if you make use of stuff like TRS to 2x TS Y cables. Very powerful for processing/looping/sampling.

Record, compressor each track, w/t effects, hit the chip and then into the box for the finish. Anything needing to be rerecorded, hit the interface direct into the daw with plugins ! Better price than most interfaces, recording without computer ahhh ! Leaving the eng to monitor the room and help in the music more ! More complication in the studio is a looser, ease of use is a winner !

The feature of a non-recorder gear to record to an on-board SDCard is relatively new and I admit it is a killer feature. I switched recently my mixer from an old and cheap Behringer Xenyx 12 channel w/ FX to Roland MX1, because I recently sold almost everything and kept my Roland gear, plus few small Korgs. MX1 makes much more sense to my current setup and wish it had the on-board memory card recording feature. But MX1 is old. Roland put it in MV1 and I am jealous. But I use Zoom R8 to record the final mix. I don't need individual channels kept, so the setup works for me. But kudos to Zoom for this mixer. I like it.

These Zooms look so appealing! I almost pulled the trigger on an L8, but ended up going another route, losing only the SD-card recording at a much lower price: an old Mackie Onyx 820-i for 75 euro. The one caveat (that also makes it so cheap on the used market, I think) is that it's firewire instead of USB. I still have a desktop PC, so I simply bought a PCI-e firewire card (30 euro) and couldn't be happier. Good pre-amps, 8 track recording, two aux busses for sending signals around (to samplers if you want), intuitive controls, and everything except recording works without a computer. The rest of the Onyx-i series is even more feature rich and can be found inexpensively on the used market as well. If you still have a computer with firewire, or a way to add it, have a look at these guys.

Great video! Got one! Love it! While I also record onto my DAW system, I love the L-12 for its simplicity, remote recording (record in any room easily, and its unencumbured recording ability - that is, 'look Ma, no DAW.' Nice thing, too, is the ability to mix down your Zoom L-12 multi-channel recording, with EFXs, I might add, to the 2-channel "Master" fader then save to HD Card as a finished, stereo recording. NICE! I would also recommend getting the Zoom FS-01 footswitch, which will give you the flexibility to punch-in (any or multiple channels) hands-free. A wonderful machine at an amazing price point.

You are in for many years of uninterrupted recording sessions. No, you won't find any problems unless you want ultra-resolution higher than 24/96. For the musician/engineer the LIveTrack is the ONLY recorder with metering per track. Anyone who doesn't think that is a GIGANTIC advantage over any other recorder, hasn't been recording very long. Discovered this studio scenario 8 years ago with a ZoomR24 (livetracks were not a thought in Zoom's head) I have been recording without a computer and never have a latency or error problem in all the 8 years. My Zoom has NEVER failed me, this means zero troubleshooting during creative times. The Zoom has changed my life, since going 100% hardware; 70 albums recorded; previously with a DAW, zero albums. AND...if I ever want to post process a finished song...USB transfer of all tracks to a DAW in standard WAV. This is the only way musicians should be recording.

Excellent review. A short while back, at the 10th anniversary of the Octatrack, Cenk made a video and behind our beloved Octatrack there was a cool mixer and no computer. I didn’t know what it was, the product wasn’t listed any place I saw on the KZread page, so I started looking in Google images for anything that looked like what I saw in the video and found it. If I hadn’t already bought the Soundcraft MTK 22 a year ago that mixer might have been just what was called for. The great feature that you mentioned about a mixer that is a multi track USB interface, the MTK has that. It has reasonable onboard effects, a limiter but also four group channels and five aux outs. in combination with a patchbay I connected to the MTK I can sample anything into my AR and my OT. That is a killer app so to speak being able to route anything into the mixer right into my the Octatrack, Whether it is my guitar my virus TI or some thing off of my iPad The shortcoming compared to the live track is that there is no onboard recorder for the multi track or even for the stereo output. For this the USB capability will have to suffice. A bonus feature of the MTK is that you can treat your inputs as having a daw insert with plugins and route it back into the analog realm. I have had some latency issues with this approach so I do not use it a lot.

L-12 is a very useful dawless/live tool but for studio recording, the preamps on it make all my synths sound muddy. It is also a very noisy mixer, and mine get all sorts of wacky power noise depending on what and how I have things connected. However, it's a needed sacrifice. Just for convenience sake. It's very useful to be able to Dawless multitrack record

I experienced the same thing by plugging into the 1/4 inch monitor out LR. I was thinking it was a bad cable but it could very well be a noisy input. Overall that is the only problem I have with that as well.

My search led me to Zoom as well, though a lower end one. The Zoom R16 is an 8 mono (tracks can be paired for stereo easily) input mixer / recorder that can act as an interface (haven't tried that, as my computer isn't with my synths). Being able to record all of that at once, while balancing volume and panning is killer.

i got the bigger brother zoom R24. i record to sd often. its nice to track and idea right while the moment is still fresh. and you will be surprised how much you can fit on a 32gb sd card. using it as an interface is great, plus every button, knob, and fader is midi mappable. i used it to control my DAW. i only wish i could record to sd while still using it as an interface.

I use a Korg D3200 with a 2Seemy video card as a visual monitor. It's MIDI synced to an Akai MPC X. I record into the Korg, then sample the recorded tracks into the X, where I chop it and add EFX. It's a nice DAWless setup. Of course it all winds up in a computer anyhow but the creation is computer free.

I've been using a trusty old Zoom H4n (non-pro) as my main synth recorder, which is great as synth line level needs no amplification from the noisy preamps. In fact, I usually even attenuate the signal a bit. And I like taking advantage of the fact that some of my synths have stereo ins and outs and built-in stereo mixers, effectively daisy-chaining audio through several pieces of gear that eventually end up in a single synth with a stereo output, and then I send it into effects and do my recording from there. I end up with a final mix with effects that just needs the occasional level adjustment in post processing and it's good to go. However, to make that process a bit easier and with additional control, especially of pan, I also did get an audio mixer, settling on a Soundcraft EPM6 just over a year ago. I didn't know anything about mixers, and so I didn't want to get anything too fancy in case I'd not get along with that way of working at all. You just never know. Of course, after using that for over a year, it has become clear to me the mixer I really wanted was a Zoom Livetrak, and probably the L-12. It just ticks all the boxes. Sometimes, when you record a full mix with effects, it may have the immediacy of the improvised patching, but it could still do with some remixing, or - more often - there are sounds in there that I'd likely never be able to replicate that I'd have loved to use for something non-improvisational. Always recording individual pre-effect tracks would open up many possibilities. Also, the L-12 would effectively replace three devices on my desk: my mixer, my H4n, and my audio interface which only has 2 in and isn't that useful for much. Great video as always.

I use a F4 to track, then into the daw world for the in-box-mix ! UA is powerful tool, 8 tracks in UA world $3,600 plus, say 4k, great option ! The L12 $ 599 ? Record in the L12 and mix in the daw UA style, can you tell the difference ! Even if you can, can the listener ? Not @ 44.1 16 bit audio. Standard. some say kHz 16 bit, in consumer head phones or speakers ? In a car

Because of your Keystep 37 vid and others, I'm setting up a cool little dawless-jam setup (Circuit, MPC One, Model:Samples, Uno Synth, Sonicware LIVEN, and Microfreak)... and needed this video, haha. :) I have an 18i20 as well, and just picked up an ADAT (ADA8200) with a long ADAT cable, so now I'm rocking 16 channels, and the setup can be far from the computer setup thanks to the 25' ADAT cable. That said, that Zoom L12 looks DOPE, and has some killer features. Excellent work as always, my friend.

I'm really interested in this. I'd love to see the more nerdy side of transferring the audio to DAW and using it as an audio interface before purchasing if you were interested in making another video on it. I have been trying to make the expert sleepers es-9 work for awhile with eurorack but it's been very buggy for me (8 bit audio bit reduction glitch and general connectivity problems with windows. I think I have a busted unit maybe). Anyways, this seems like a great alternative to not mess with computers when tracking, although, I'm assuming you would have to abandon clock sync to DAW. The multi track + clock sync with CV tools was the hope for me with ES9

I use a combination of a mixer Yamaha mg12xu for live jamming, clarett 4 pre interface for recording to my daw and a patch bay where every single piece of gear has its own set of connections on the front panel allowing me to send anything anywhere I need to. For example I can insert a reverb or effect pedal between any of my synths and mixer or interface. I can individually record a synth track to my interface (up to 8 at a time) straight into my daw. I can sample any of my instruments to my mpc live or pull samples from my computer. I highly recommend investing in a patch bay it’s really become the hub of my studio giving endless options for routing audio anywhere you need without needing to wear out the jacks on your synths. Oh and the H6 is also one of my favourite pieces of gear. Perfect for field recording too on top of fast and easy on the go multitrack recording.

Very cool idea and applicable to my growing studio where I have synth+guit+bass that I am constantly plugin in and out of sampler....a real pain and vibe killer. Also would be interesting to know if earphone A can be sent to alternate set of Monitors (in case you have two sets....) Also would be interested to hear how preamps are when using condenser mics - thanks for the great content!!

When you're using it as an audio interface, is the send effect track available in Ableton? I haven't been able to find out if the audio interface mode only makes the 12 inputs available plus the master, or if the return is available to record in the DAW as well.

Just been looking at the L 12 recently am considering it as one of my next upgrades, love the idea of being able to use it as an audio interface as well as a standalone unit. From my understanding of it tracks 9/10 and 11/12 are stereo in, but when using it as an audio interface you will loose either 9/10 or 11/12 to get the audio coming out from a DAW. Being that i am synth orientated and plan on expanding, is it possible to assign say tracks 5 and 6 or 7 and 8 as a stereo input like what can be done on the Zoom R24 (I think it's called stereo link) in either standalone or as an audio interface? As an interface i guess it depends more on what the DAW allows as routing for mono and stereo tracks.

Does the h6 record wav format tracks that don't need to be exported (converted) to be read? I have a tascam portastudio, which does the master recording like you mentioned (and that's good for me as I don't use a daw), though it will send individual tracks to your daw, if you choose. But whether the master or the individual tracks any recording has to be exported, in order to be read. So I can't just pop the card out, through it in a computer and see the tracks without exporting first. And the thing with the exporting is it converts the recording to 16 bit from 24. Not really a huge deal for me when it's the master recording and it's going into my music player, but a problem if I want to tweak the individual tracks somewhere else first. Anyway, does the h6 require exporting in order to be seen by the computer (sorry for the long explanation lol)?

I used to have a Zoom but the available desk space in my studio kept getting smaller and smaller. I sold it and got a 1010 Bluebox and I'm pretty happy with it. Then again, most of my gear is compatible with the small TRS stereo inputs. I get 6 stereo tracks (or 12 mono) and it can take a direct Eurorack signal without issue. Plus it records direct to SD card.
