An hour of James May talking about his life | TV shows, food, drink, travel & more

The FoodTribe podcast is back, and it's going to be bigger and better than ever (which shouldn't be too hard, as series one only ended up being three episodes). We're starting off with a good one - nearly an hour of chat about food, drink, wine, travel, cheese and the moon with the one and only... James May. We may have even invented a new religion.

Anything with James May and Oz Clarke would be greatly appreciated. But, also... I would like to see James in a new trio format with Rachael and Lucy. Subject? Don't know, but Brown, Hogg and May would have me watch, whatever the subject for it.

I could listen to James all day. Any man who comes up with a recipe that involves roasting a block of Spam and doing stuff like making Airfix models is my kind of bloke. I'll be 60 this year, and I still like playing with my Mamod steam engine that I got for Christmas when I was about ten years old. It's especially satisfying to run it outside when the temperature is sub-zero, because it makes more steam. I also like baked beans.

Belated happy birthday to Rachel. She is as stunning as ever and so beautifully expressive. Loved the chat with James. A final note about beans. I did a phase of curried beans in my 20’s but beans are the flavour, at the end of the day. I do like some grated cheese on top and, if I have them on toast I like to spread marmite. All the best for 2021 with the pub old boy 🍷

Not really. Johnny Cash came out of rock-and-roll, and that's what influenced his style. He joined the "outlaw movement" in the 70s. I hear very little honky tonk (Williams) or neo-traditionalism (Jackson) in his music.

Ayup. At about 20:00. Always enjoyed food, always been a competent cook, but never really gave it any serious thought. Devil-may-care, come-what-may, etc. Same thing with exercise. No more. It's a funny sort of pattern; I suspect a lot of us middle-aged folks go through it, lockdown or no. We wake up one morning and look in the mirror (or groan at a twinge) and decide it's time to start paying attention to the eating and the stretching. And then a lot of us get healthier than we were when we were young, or at least we get a little window of re-vivification, before we dry up and blow away.
