I feel like the best way to adopt the idea of Ussop getting his moment is if they added a scene that was a sobering moment for Ussop where he Acknowledges just how much stronger a fish man is than him. I’m glad they changed Garp and Koby. In the manga it felt like that when Garp turned up he turned up not because it was in character for him but to hype stuff up. And if we are being honest, he probably should have turned up earlier based on his character. He spent his entire life trying to stop Luffy becoming a Pirate in his backstory. But in the manga he just gives up at some pointlong before he bitches to Luffy and Ace that he tried and they wouldn’t listen. In the live action Garp is doing the thing he said he did in the manga. But this time he’s actually doing it. Probably so that when he goes off on them later he actually has a point. As for Koby. In the manga he said he’d chase Luffy and one of fans big complaints is never seeing Garp teach him. The Garp and Koby story is fixing two issues the fans and the manga objectively had.

I think its kind of a shame they cut Coby's moment where he actually stood up to Alvida, that felt like kind of a defining moment for him. Even if it wzs on impulse, and he retreats bzck into being a coward immediately afterward, the fact that in the manga/anime he dares stand up to her for just a moment after Luffy's encouragement meant a lot for his character imo, so I wish theyd kept that part.

The point of Garp "chasing" Luffy around was because even though Garp didn't want Luffy to become a pirate at a point in time, it was more important to him that he followed his dream like Ace did. So he kept up the farce for the marines (and because it's expected for a grand/parent) and pretended to discourage him from chasing Ace to sea while simultaneously training him for the life he chose.

Luffy eyes are shaded in the manga and anime and it just makes that moment so much more badass. Inaki just doesn’t have a good mad face😂. It probably means he’s as sweetheart as it gets when it comes to his actual personality but luffy for as happy to lucky as he gets also has to biggest temper explosion. Aside from Bellamy luffy has usually got it all over his face that he’s gonna fuck up whatever has just wronged him or his friends. And it’s hella intimidating. Inaki just looks too nice. Garp and Coby getting more development feels like an order from up on high by Oda himself. In the manga it always felt incredibly clumsy that Coby is supposed to be this marine parallel to Luffy, "the grandson Garp never had" (lol). His development in sheer strength is behind Luffy, but he's always getting stronger at an insane rate that rivals a shonen protagonist like Luffy. This is portrayed by Coby appearing like three times over a thousand chapters. Showing the audience Coby is growing organically opposite of Luffy is a WAY better idea than having him appear every few hundred chapters as a wildly stronger character.

My biggest issue with Ussop was not having his scene in Arlong Park where he had to talk himself out of running away, but I hope they get his moment in Alabasta. I was so happy when I realized Garp would be chasing them because to me I felt like it was weird Garp didn't ever even try to prevent Luffy from setting off and becoming a pirate, and his bounty poster and becoming 'wanted' only after he'd proved to Garp he understood the consequences and wouldn't give up on his dream just gave me this victorious feeling all throughout the ending scenes. Idk if anyone else ever felt this way about the manga but it really did feel like we'd missed something in Garp's characterization. In flashbacks he is dead set on raising the boys to be strong marines but in present time he's kinda chilling, he's owned that the boys are pirates and there isn't anything he can do about that, so to me this plot in season one felt like that missing piece connection those two sides of Garp

The shade tossed at the anime onlys took me out 🤣🤣🤣. But yea, I was side eying Garp the whole time like I know better. He’s probably gonna do some OG crackhead nonsense and I’m here for it. I think the pacing was incredible for the limited time they had. The only time I found myself going “nooo, slow it down a bit” was with Baratie. Otherwise, yea, the One Piece live action is a blast. I was also very surprised with the fishmen. I thought they were gonna look dumb, but they turned out so dope!

The casting really was perfect. The way Oda creates his characters has to be a big part of that. You give an actor a really well defined character framework and then add the bonus of a world where they can chew the scenery in a good way and be over the top. It gives the actor something foundational and the casting people something equally strong to compare to. I can imagine so many auditions were a "you just know" kind of thing when you see it.

I loved everything, except Syrup Village. They missed everything that made me fall in love with Usopp there. I might be one of the few ones that love that arc the most from the east blue saga. Not that the changes was too bad. Everyone else got a lot of moments and crew dynamics and they cut lots of bad stuff. I’m just sad we lost everything that made Usopp amazing for me too. Him crying wolf and going the pirates are coming, even when he knows they won’t believe him, have to try to warn them. When that fails, him then deciding that, he will make sure it stays a lie by protecting the village on his own anyways. Big bravery heart of gold right there that sold me to him. In the show they changed that to him going, the pirates are coming, which makes no sense, the pirates are already here and literally murdering people as we speak, what? Then he cries and goes, why does nobody believe me, and then Koby shows up to be all, I believe you and will help. Fhshdcnjd. Everyone else stole his moments for me. Alas. Everything else and other changes, especially with Buggy, I was maximum in love with.

I liked Syrup village, but I do wish Usopp got more individuality. I like his part in Arlong park, and I can’t wait to see more from our Sniper king. I also wish we got the Kuro scene where he was given new glasses and crushed them but I can live without that easily. I do like how you can see the damage to the Going Merry accumulating, as Gael’s cannon ball throw broke the railing, and it stays broken. Overall, 10/10

Anyone who finds it weird that anime Garp never tried to chase Luffy down has to remember Garp is one of the most absent parental figures in the show. He only shows up to slap the kids around a bit and lets the mountain bandits take care of literally every thing else. He makes it clear that he thinks the marines are their best option but overall I’ve never felt that he felt the need to force it when they left because they made their final choice and he did what he could for them.

It's called a "B Plot" with Garp and the Marines. They could only afford so much on the Budget. The Marine B Plot gives them a lower budget narrative to push the Plot forward, all while re-using set peices. Grand Line Review did a segment on why in his review.

I still don't fully know how I feel about the Garp storyline. Garp was the one I had the most problems with his characterization. He needed to be smiling and laughing more. I loved seeing him being just as insane as Luffy, and seeing Koby slowly find out just HOW insane Garp is was incredibly entertaining, but I missed seeing fun old man Garp that we know in canon. Overall though, I absolutely loved the live action. It was so good, and my non-OP friends have been enjoying the show as well, which as a longtime fan is the most fun I've had in a long time. I think they put Garp and Koby sooner because it was happening at that time in side stories and they wanted a consistent Navy view point throughout the season. I think they will be placed on the back burner next season in favor of Smoker taking on that role just like he was in manga/anime the pursuer of the Strawhats seeing that not all pirates are bad. The season break also gives them time to either find a new more mature Koby or for the actress/actor to bulk up a little more. Predictions, the season two ending will be the Black Beard v Ace intro but that fight won't happen till start of season 3. Marineford war might be the season 3 end or the entirety of season 4 if they wanted to slow their production speed down for more Game of Thrones pacing once they hit Alabasta, where it's one major arc per season.

Hmm, one serious moment I really enjoyed was Luffy's serious face towards Koby when going towards Kaya's house to stop Kuro. I thought he had nailed the serious Luffy face and the contrast that it has with his naturally goofy face. However yes, Luffy was a bit too shounen-. He was a bit too heroish. Part of Luffys charm is that, although he has heroic characteristics, he is also extremely selfish and ends up helping people through his selfishness. Why help Nami and consequently coco village? Simply because Nami cried. They showed the selfishness a bit though. I want serious Luffy when appropriate, the writers just have to make sure the dialogue is as cheeseless as possible.
