An explosion happened INSIDE the board🤦‍♂️ Can I fix this JL Audio HD amplifier?

Ойын-сауық

Completely invisible and undetectable fault until you start poking around and putting 2 and 2 together! Hope you enjoy!

Sam, I still watch all your videos and I'm liking your new stream of amp fixin's videos! So fresh and good to watch! Hopefully they're easy and quick enough to cut together so they don't soak up all your spare time, I know how that is. Thank you so much for your contribution to humanity's overall knowledgebase, it is SO MUCH appreciated by those of us in similar niche industries and hobbyisms. You're irreplaceable. Remember that.

Yes, without a doubt, Gordon the Amp Doctor is a LEGEND even all the way over here in the US! He has helped me several times with a few purchase recommendations as well as some project starters. I have so much respect for all you techs that work on this gear and on this level. SO man tiny parts in such a tiny area....lol! Barevids......thank you for taking the time to post your....uh....bare vids....LOL!!!

I got a rf power 650 that would put your skills to the test 😁. It needs repaired. Been meaning to have it fixed for a while, every time I pull it out to work on it.. I just slowly put it back in the closet lmao

Seen a young fella last night fixing some Xbox ones and using flux and a solder torch to get chips to center themselves on the board after misplacing them with tweezers and the iron. It was absolute genius to see. When the flux and solder melted under the hot air everything self centered into the perfect position.

Yeah it's super useful! I do the same for chips like IRS2093M in Audison amps that are a pain to position ☺

@@barevids I thought it was a very clever technique, never done it yet. Most the time if I'm soldering it a wire connection with a torch and a vice. Not very precise..

I run all Genesis amps for mids and highs - I noticed you are running a Genesis Profile when you toured your vehicle.. very nice class A/B designs. The amp doctor does great work, he is like the A/B Guru and Barevids is the class D guy. LOL

@@barevids nice! I have a dual mono and a four channel - I’ve seen one of those on Facebook one time from the UK! yeah they get warm but I love the simplicity of the transistor A/B design. I only use them on mids and highs, I use class D on my sub. But they have a wonderful sound and since it’s just mids and highs they still get way louder than I would ever want to listen at (granted you have efficient speakers)

150V?! That's getting up into tube/valve amp territory. I thought modern solid state amps were like max 50V. Well now I learned to be careful poking around in amps, even modern ones as they can still shock you.

The largest potential I have seen is in a korean halfbridge 12,000W amplifier, 487V DC across the rails. Ridiculous to work on..

Loads of big crown PA amplifiers are around +-205v a rail. So ~410 with a nice 12000uf per rail cap bank... Those things REALLY go bang.

Another HD amp. Same one I had. Those HD amps are something else. From how it looks, the heavy traces which pass the rail voltages are in the layers, and the controls (drivers, SMD capacitors, and resistors) are all external surface mounted by design. Good idea, but repair wise, not a good idea. Looks like another user error, or installer error. Either overheated, or clipped heavily (or ran low ohm and voltage at the same time).

Odd that the board didn’t go up in smoke, must be a weak via. I have 3 JL 1000/1’s here that turned themselves into welders, it’s really impressive to see lol.

broken inter layer traces usually show up as a subtle splurge out vias near the trace. Make no mistake there a straight nightmare. given your knowlege of the topology of the amp, id just run a bridge wire. annd now at 11:50 you suggest the same. I dont repair amps, but auto ecus BCM's, fuseboxes etc.

@@whozaskin3639 not that I recall unless it was something easy, HVAC stuff isn't usually coded to the car so it's almost always easier and cheaper to just go on eBay and buy another. Unless it's a simple fault. In which case it's usually a visably burnt trace etc
