Guy signed exclusive rights to the use of Vantablack - a material with endless potential in artwork. I didn't know crippling the competition is a thing in art industry, unless you are fake.

Art as an industry does need some sort of competition to be sustainable, but slapping a trademark on a simple pigment like this is entirely unethical. Competition should only come into play in this field with finished artwork, not elements of artwork.

Stuart Semple made Black 2.0 in retaliation. It's almost as dark as Vantablack to the point where human eyes can't tell the difference and its safer to use and store and it's affordable to most artists. Anish Kapoor is banned from using Black 2.0 and only Anish Kapoor is banned.

I think the point Hockney is making is that once a piece is wholly made by production assistants then it’s not really a piece with input from “the artist” so it’s no different than a piece of furniture. I would have to agree with him. Michelangelo or Renaissance artists wouldn’t pass off assistant works as their own. They at least put their mark on them.

my take on art has come from nature, the impressionists, my father's painting and sculpting, and some random artists over the years. I've seen many forms of art and feel like art can serve many purposes. I feel anish is lucky now that's he's famous. He doesn't even need to know what he's making and people are going to pay millions.

@@eeiity8600 I don't really think so. The creators are the only ones who can decide who uses it. Since the material is very expensive and difficult to produce, it makes sense to me that they would choose to give the rights to an already rich and famous artist. People are blaming Anish, but I doubt he has any real say in the matter.

Mask DeMask, see that’s why I was confused. If it’s so rare and valuable they wouldn’t want it going out to anyone, which is why they gave Anish legal rights to it I presume? I mean what’s the point of having it ‘copyrighted’ (I don’t believe that’s the correct word to use in this context but whatever lol) if they’re just going to give it to everyone?

+h.thomas ackermann I disagree, a work of art is a work of art regardless of the methods to achieve the end result. You take this puritanical stance, which isn't applicable to his vision, he needs help to achieve the vision. Assistants are a mere medium to achieve, don't be jealous.

Although I am not giving my opinion of his art, this is the only way I can find to comment on this man. He says today in a statement that if Shamima Begum and her friends were white schoolgirls from Wiltshire "would they be seen as terrorists or victims of terrorists. We have no doubt that we would be demanding that no expense be spared not a moment wasted in having them returned to the safety of their homes in England". I am so sick of these people playing the race card. Does he not know that a young WHITE male Jack Letts has also been stripped of his citizenship for the same reason. Do your research!

I find no skill in abstract art, but that is just me. i am the type of person who needs to see something recognizable. A two by six by 14 piece of wood cut in half, sprayed with varnish, one piece leaning against another , represents NOTHING but a piece of wood cut in half. What is art? Something that COMMUNICATES and draws the viewer INTO IT. A pile of sand or whatever, says nothing to me. -But people to the person who gets others to spend millions on such.... so BRAVO to that "artist". Who am I or anyone else to say? IF it COMMUNICATES, EVOKES EMOTION, I LABEL IT ART. It ( abstract Art ) simply isn't MY thing! That's all.

have a look at Kandinsky's "Concerning the Spiritual in Art", it may clarify some of the thought behind "non-objective" art. Art practice has morphed into an "anything goes" formula. The people who got the ball rolling were the DADA artists. They were contrarians and vocal opposition to a corrupt system. They tried to upset people to regain their moral compass. 90 years later it's all DADA intended to avoid the moral compass. A magnificent COUP in the name of creativity to promote a "Culture of Death" and empty lives. Kapoor is one this cultures poster children.

Not really my friend, I'm an architect and I studied abstract art too. Not to say you are wrong, but there is something special in abstract art as it provokes you to think and to explore something from the "nothingness" and that's the fun part of abstract art, it's not how you sees it, it's how you feel it :)

I like it, but the pomp around it gets on my nerves - its fair enough you are entitled to feel that way! Why do others think they can tell you, how you feel about it is wrong. It's an 'acquired taste' means it's made in an elitist language. Surley if it communicates well and honestly it should move past that ?

Lord! Thay British accent really adds to the whole snobbish nonsense that rich people say next to other rich people to tell that they all understand a piece but really everyone is just making things up. None of those pieces brought any emotions to me. None. Art should bring something. Let it be horror, joy, wonder, curiosity, all sort but it shouldn't make you feel completely uninterested.
