An everyday rider's thoughts on the 2021 Royal Enfield Himalayan (USA)

I borrowed this bike off of RidersShare for several days and put about 250+ miles on it. With 411cc, 428 lbs wet with off road capabilities, it's the tallest, most top heavy bike I've ever ridden. This is the USA version - so it is fuel injected but it does have a choke. As a short rider that usually commutes in town, I had a great time with this bike in the city, on the highway, and on country and mountain roads. The owner and RidersShare didn't want me to take it off-road, so I made sure to respect those caveats.

The Himalayan was my first bike. I'm 6 feet tall, it was awesome for me. Wind deflection was a bit of a problem, because the wind hit me straight in the helmet, but otherwise I thought it was an excellent bike. I've since traded bikes and ride an Interceptor 650, but miss the comfort and off-road capability of the Himalayan.

Got one in April, 2020. Rode from North Carolina to Oregon on the Trans America Trail that August. Amazing bike for shorter people. Mine did come with a center stand. It handles very well off road. Overheated going up Engineer's pass in Colorado due to lack of oxygen. Rested for about 10-20 min and thumped the rest of the way up.

I believe this bikes primary reason for existence is off road 'mountain riding'. A few yers ago a friend rode an Enfield Bullet in the Himalayas. It was a 'Holiday' organised by a local company.( India) ....He said the scenery was spectacular but the ride very gruelling, This on a motorcycle whose primary function was road use. Enfield appear to have addressed this with a newer more dedicated model. He rides a Enfield Bullet in UK now, the same model he once climbed the Himalayan mountain range.

Lovely review, especially to hear comparisons with other bikes. I've just bought one in the UK; ours don't have a choke. I had an issue with cold starts. Videos from India suggested adjusting the idle speed, but my bike doesn't have the adjuster screw either. Spark plug was a little dirty with black dust, I replaced it with an iridium one, and it cured the problem 🙂

Very popular in Europe, Australia, Asia and have a many positive reviews from actual owners. The other positive feature is the price. Almost no other manufacturer can compete , and they have a 3 year warrantee. Thanks and stay safe. 🏍👍🇨🇦

Hi Doodle, always move the bike around on the left side, the same side as the side stand. Modern side stands either retract immediately when there is no weight on it or retract when you least expect it. The bike should always fall into and not away from you for better control. Centre stands are generally easy you just need to work on your technique. With your body facing the bike at the point where the fuel tank meets the saddle, hold the left handlebar grip and place your right hand on a bar at about waist height (slighty higher on the Himalayan), push the bike away from you slighty and retract the side stand. Push the centre stand down and ensure that both legs engage on the ground and lift your head up. Now take a breath, breathe out slowly and push the stand down whist at the same time lifting with your right hand. This technique works for all bikes I've come across in over forty years, the Himalayan is a breeze compared to a full size cruiser / bagger. Go on, you can do it.

I have a Himalayan and the center stand is standard. I have those mirrors and they’re made by Double Take Mirrors. That switch is an enricher which Enfield says must be used when the bike is cold. My bike is cold blooded and needs 2-3 restarts.

Hi Doodle, I liked this review a lot, and we can always rely on an honest opinion from your highly respected channel. It's nice to have a girls aspect, with the increasing numbers of girl riders, they can relate to you. I like the looks and it's place in the mid power band, could be popular with beginners. I look forward to seeing anything you test drive, but I would love to see you test ride an electric motorcycle, because as strange as it seems, they will be our future!

My wife who is 5'4 and light gets her gs500f onto the centre stand by concentrating her weight onto the right foot that is on the centrestand and then pulling the bike up to increase the weight downward onto the centrestand foot. She is literally standing on one foot on the centrestand with her left hand on the steering for stability and her right hand under the seat on a piece of frame pulling more weight downward onto her right leg with the left leg hanging in mid air.

This is actually one of the shortest, if not THE shortest adventure or dual purpose bike in the 400cc+ range of bikes. Even the 300cc bikes (KLX300 and CRF300L) are 33.9-34.7 inches seat height. The Yamaha TW200 is about the same at 31.1, and the XT250 at 31.9, but the Suzuki DR200 is 33.3,the Kawasaki KLX230 is 34.8 and the KLX250 is 35", only the VanVan 200 is the only one shorter at 30.3. Of course we are talking dual purpose bikes which is comparable to most adventure bikes. You rode an adventure bike that is one of the shortest seat heights on the market.

I liked this review. Some of the best reviews of bikes are from people who ride types that are outside their general preference. Seems to be more honest without preconceived expectations. I’ve been a believer since the surge in ADV riding took off, that you can easily throw a boat load of cash at this and only to find out it may not be for you long term. I think the Himalayan provides a super price point to give it the old college try. The worst thing to happen is to decide it’s not for you. Given the current market on used bikes, I think one would be hard pressed to lose more than $1000.00 on it after one year. If that’s the case, it’s cheaper than renting one. Keep up the good work. Love the honesty.

Loved your video. I bought a 2020 Himalayan about a year ago in Utah- I think it was one of the first sold here and I love it. I'm a big old guy that likes to ride on and off road. So far it has carried me over anything I've had the guts to try. I'm an avid fly fisherman and I use it to take me to remote trout streams in the Utah mountains. I also enjoy the hundreds miles of desert dirt trails and roads just out my back door in Utah. If I could change anything about the Himalayan it would be to go from the five speed to a six speed tranny, not so much for a higher top speed although that would be nice, but I would like a slightly lower slow speed for some of the off road riding I do. Other than that it is a wonderful bike.

Absolutely spot on the comment on the throttle; very forgiving. Alongside the low power, low seat height, slender profile, upright position, relative low weight, this is probably one of the best "proper" beginner bike on the market. (cheap to buy too....) Owned one three years ago, when returning to motorcycling. I recently upgraded to an Africa Twin 1100, via an Interceptor 650 and a Triumph Street Scrambler 900cc. (yes I've had four bikes in three years...lol). If I have the money and space, I would have kept the Himalayan as a second bike. Love the quirky look and the thumping of the one cylinder engine. Good review, well done.

My current and first bike is a Versys-X 300. It has a little less torque than the Himalayan (26 Nm vs 32 Nm or 19 lb.ft vs 23 lb.ft), but more power (40 HP vs 24 HP). The Versys is a little taller than the Himalayan (84,5 cm vs 80 cm or 33.3” vs 31.5”) and I’m only 5’8”, I can’t flat foot on both feet. But I managed to learn to ride it. So, definitely Himalayan is a good first bike. Maybe for 5’6” it’s already ok
