An Evening with Stephen Colbert at PaleyFest LA
Stephen Colbert held court to a sold-out audience at PaleyFest LA on March 16, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. In conversation with Pete Holmes he discussed such topics as how he differentiates The Late Show from The Colbert Report and the way he interviews politicians compared to other guests, as well as sharing his biggest comedic influences. @@janetownley very nice analogy, Patty. So nice to see young people picking up on sharp satire and intelligent political humor. Good job raising them. I'm ancient, but older friends turned 15-year-old me onto Lenny Bruce and gave me a life long love of political humor. Kids don't really want to zone out on mindless gore like Grand Theft Auto #376. So much healthier to follow these real-life stars riffing on social humour and moronic politicians.
Colbert and Seth got me through the last four years. Looking back I truly had a broken heart and they were a life preserver in all the craziness

That's one hour and three minutes of my life I gladly will not get back. Colbert is great but my life will never be complete until I get to see the "Grand Fatherland" piece again from his Daily Show days.
I’m watching this during the pandemic and Colbert haven’t had an audience for over a year. He’s still doing great though, but I bet he misses his audience. But I love hearing Evie laugh in the background now. There’s so much love between the two of them

14:35 - "Pretty good" is an understatement from Stephen about his current work load. He does new shows Mondays thru Fridays, however Friday editions are always pre-taped on a Thursday alongside Thursdays edition, meaning Stephen gets Fridays off. 200 shows a year means roughly 10 weeks vacation breaks, so compared to normal people, along with a $15 million salary, Stephen is doing fantastic!
Thanks Stephen. We need your humor to get through these somber times. ♥️
What a wonderful interview. Normally I would have been turned off by all the Jesus talk (just had some really bad experiences with Southern Baptist churches), but I so enjoyed even the religious discussions here. Much love to Stephen and Pete. Two great comedians!

Being Alone is Awesome Stephen !! Being in rural TX and comprehending humanity is a sentence to solitude itself! But YOU give us quality time.. it’s just that it’s more real for U than US. The “gianting” process that accompanies stardom is hard won for this blade. Sharpest wit in the land. Easier for a Southerner to go west than a Cali’n to go South.. keep up the great work SC.
46: "You can see - it's a wafer!" Pete's intonation is hilarious and brilliant.
This was excellent!
Thanks for helping us to feel less crazy! Amazing that the Late Show writers create their brilliant jokes in the last 1/2 to 1 hr before the show and there is no rehearsal! :)
There is not a reason on Earth for him to actually do this in practice, especially in the moment/space, but I cannot stop being stunned by the fact that he sets the Oyster and the tool down while talking. Watch it again. 48:11 He sets them down and closes the scene.
Octogenarian Colbert fan appreciates truth being presented up front and crazy being called by its right name. He informs, doesn't pontificate. Oh, if more of the world would emulate him.
best thing Ive watched!!!! Stephen Colbert is amazing!!!
Pete Holmes / Stephen Colbert AND "Tte 700 Club Gone Awry" William Paley AND "Would Immediately Renew Gunsmoke For Another 20 Years iIf Brought Back From The Dead" Note: this joke is an exprewsion of love & respect. It is modled off of a recurrring gag that the show does nightly: picture of said person AND "what they resemblein the photograph". That was awesome. Love Colbert; his humor, & perspective. The 'John Ritter-ish' Pete Holmes was the perfect host.

This was truly wonderful from start to finish. More, please!
. Okay. I really hope the right people see this and do something with this. . I have just seen the Google interview and I must go back to others that I need to collect in one place. . I have taken to looking for these interviews with Steven Colbert, collecting them and paying close attention t them. They are like lesson packed lectures and I learn so much from them. I have decided, Mr. Colbert, that 1.) these interviews should be collected and packaged for college level instructional purposes and/or 2.) they should be the basis for a textbook for theater, public speaking and related arts. . The thing that makes these work that way and so well is how insightful and self aware you are about what you are doing and feeling and how well you articulate those things to the point of finest nuance. . This is valuable stuff. . Is anyone reading this? Is there anyone in the entertainment field that could do something?
I love the bit about "how does this matter in eternity", puts everything into perspective :D

Reckon it depends on your mood. Just pick your battles; not everything has to be taught or discussed or debated; lots of things can be let go for other fare. "Let's come back to that later" is an appropriate response, followed by "What else is bugging you?" Can't figure out a simple explanation? Use parents' tried and true method of "You'll understand when you're older" or "You'll understand soon enough," for young adults. If they persist, if they're really at a loss, are really curious and need to know, take a moment to think about what they're really asking about. Ask them what they don't understand, then go from there. More often than not, though, they'll talk themselves into the answer. Then, it becomes our job to either validate that or countermand it, be impressed or tweak it.

This was an excellent discussion. I might suggest to Pete that he allow the guest to answer the question fully before interjecting with his own story. I know this was probably more about anxiety or interview style than anything, but it can come across as off-putting. No offense.
@MCross-xg9ss

He does that some on his podcast, too. It really doesn't seem like it's him being consciously rude or even obliviously self-absorbed, more just something he's not super good at modulating. Pete's really knowledgeable and insightful on a broad range of subjects and is full of interesting anecdotes based in thoughtful introspection. So much so that he's oozing with it, and is sometimes not highly adept on tactfully interjecting it in conversation --not even majorly so, but it does seem to at least be a mild thing from time to time. ~~~ Colbert has had a bad habit, himself, of doing this with guests on his own show, in the first year, at least. You could tell it's just him trying to balance letting the guest talk with throwing in enough good banter and levity. ~~~ I do this myself sometimes, as someone with Adhd coupled with having a fairly large amount of knowledge andof a certain range of subjects on my mind about a wide range of topics, with *a whole lot* of ideas, often beyond just superficial, about a variety things (sometimes quality and worth sharing, others mayyybe not). So, I can totally see how someone could sometimes have that flaw without it being rooted in rudeness or some other real vice.

If you watch clips of his old talk show, The Pete Holmes Show, he used to be MUCH worse at the interrupting. You could tell it was from a place of genuinely being excited to talk with his guest, but it was still noticeable.
