I don't think any Publisher will be stupid enough to give another contract to Rothfuss for publishing a second trilogy. Daw Books is waiting for 7 years and 8 month's to publish the conclusion to the trilogy. While Rothfuss claimed that all 3 books were already written back in 2007.

Amazes me how he presses the point that his mental health isn't in the best of shape right now; which makes it difficult for him to be creative, and everyone overlooks it completely and still scratches and grasps at him for his third book. The problem with society nowadays is that people don't see other people any more. They just see a product and are only interested in consuming. Generalising. Obviously. Throughout the talk he dropped hints that he wanted people to reflect on their mental health and be empathetic to other people's mental health. It was a conversation he wanted to get into but very few bothered to listen. Just waiting to launch their own, fruitless, questions at him. A nice snide remark at the end though. 'It's because you're all such lovely conversational partners'. I imagine he meant it to some degree. But, meh. I'm probably completely wrong.

We should just use that excuse at work then for the next 8 years. It wouldn't work at a retail level, eventually they'd give you the boot. He has to weigh his desire to release something with getting it right while getting over his perfectionism and weathering constant jokes about his writing, which coming from a friend can be taken as gentle teasing and from a stranger can be taken as yet more unhelpful criticism from some jerk which just exacerbates his issues with mental health. Everyone always asks the same questions and he reads the same things. Like yeah, you get occasional gems here and there, but seriously. I feel like I've watched this interview a million times. Like, I get it. After awhile it gets difficult to be more original with your questions and it's not like you can control the questions people ask in an open Q&A, but I think my favorite parts about these Q&As is Pat rambling about something he feels deeply about based on a question he hasn't been asked like a gajillion times.

The talk is meant for the audience at the con. He asked in the very beginning how many people had no idea who he was and judging by his reaction it must have been quite a few hands. So it shouldn't be a surprise if you hear a lot of the same things as previous talks, seeing how he is essentially introducing himself to new people.

A *proper* spectrum would actually involve individual contributions you can be all at the same time and to different extents. A continuous spectrum such as light power spectra would involve different wavelengths each of which you could be partially attributed to. That seems pretty darn general to me. You could be a little of everything at once. You could be a clearly defined color (a single sharp peak) or you could be all over the map pretty evenly (white light) or you could be somewhere in between. That's for some reason not how "spectrum" tends to be used colloquially though.

As a native portuguese speaker, i really noticed that english have a more poetrical freedom in its grammar than portuguese. Like Rothfuss spoke about the title "slow regard of silent things". In order to translate it and keep the feeling, the mood it expresses in english in portuguese is extremely difficult if not just impossible! Thats why i love to write and read in english much more than portuguese. German also seems to have this "stuff", but im still learning it

From an publisher standpoint, it isn't that odd to release the book at the same time as the movie and game and such, and it could very well be withheld for this reason. Now, I'm not saying that's the reason why the third book isn't out, but I bet a lot of the people shitting on Rothfuss for not working haven't even considered the mere possibility. @FitzChivalry Farseer I'm not confident I could write a good book given eight years and I'm confident that few people could. He did say they were all written, that seems to have been a mistake, and few people know why he said that. For example he could be unhappy with the third book for whatever reason. I imagine at this point that he would gladly work non stop for a year to finish the third book if it would stop people asking him about it.

Not a contract for more pieces of art in the future, not a promise on a timeframe for the continuation of the piece of art. Also, the story is good, but let's get real, it is overhyped af! Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive is also a good story, even more epic in scope and the dude can pump out 1,000 page book every two years with other smaller books in between. Rothfuss is not nearly the great author as everyone seem to think he is. Other authors are willing and happy to give updates on their work, Pat doesn't even like people asking him for book 3. He live streams himself playing video games, does charities (I'm not saying charities are bad), designs board games, writes redundant books about side characters, sells merchandise themed after his book series, tries to make deals with people to turn his incomplete book series into a show or movie or video game, goes on vacations, and goes to interviews and book signings where he talks about the same things over and over all the while steadfastly avoiding the one question everyone is interested in. He literally does everything and anything he can to avoid working on book 3, it's like he's afraid everyone will forget about him or something if he finishes the series. Also, there are lots and lots of really awesome book authors who have familys, side hobbys, and deal with all of the same problems that he does and they still manage to write more than 3 books a decade!!!

I've come up with a theory. He wasn't lying when he said he already had the whole series written all those years ago. Sometimes artists will wait until after they've died to release their works of art because it causes it to go up in value. I think we will have to wait until he keels over from heart disease or old age and THEN we will finally get book three! Also, yes, yes you could write 10 pages on the day your dog died maybe, possibly you could channel that emotion into the book you're writing and possibly make it just that much more spectacular when you're finished.

@@Thefinalcountdown650 so everything with magic relating to school is now a "harry potter ripoff"? If the novels were as shitty as you described them as in the first place, then I suppose there was nothing to "fall for" to begin with? Well, that aside, I appreciate all and any recommendations. Just from what I can tell from amazon's description of the book though, it's as much a ripoff as The Name of the Wind. The whole "transported into a video game" or "transported to another world" thing has been done to death (and not just recently). Though, I suppose it's the take on it that really matters and I haven't read enough to give fair judgement. But The Name of the wind's take on the fantasy genre is unique and nothing like harry potter's. I do think Rothfuss is a genius. I've never experienced writing as fluid and beautiful as his, and his story captivated me like no other. And while I do feel the second book wasn't as strong as the first, it was still pretty damn good. I won't deny that he may be a bit of a salesmen, but the lack of a third book could also be due to the publishers who sell as a profession. Not saying it is, but it could quite possibly be. well, anyways, I understand your pain. I've been waiting for a third book for five years (which for a kid who's now in sophomore year, that's a damn long time), and I do get upset that there's no book three, or even a rumor of it, but what can you do. I'm still gonna read it when it comes out, but that's not cause I fell for some salesman's one hit wonder, it's because I legitimately enjoyed the series. If you did too, I suggest you do the same. Authors don't work for us, but we don't have to buy from them either. If you're genuinely angry with him and feel like the series robbed something from you, I suggest you reread it when book three is announced (the second read is also very fun). Because you'd only feel that way if you invested a part of you in this series. I mean, otherwise, why are you even here? Woah... that was longer than intended. Again, thanks for the recommendation. I'll probably pass though. I watch a bit of anime so i'm a bit sick of the surge of "transported to another world" titles in recent years.

Book 3 has become the elephant in every room that Rothfuss inhabits. what happened to "a writer writes" ? clearly not this writer. He just goes to conventions, strokes his own ego, laps up the attention while not producing anything for nearly 8 years. Yawn.

He's been drinking more too. If you check out his twitter he mentions it a lot, drinking and streaming, drinking and hanging out, etc. I dunno, if someone is suffering from mental health issues I'm not sure drugs and alcohol is the answer. Who knows, if he stopped with the booze he may recover the joy and creativity he once had

@@lalalalalalal4 Mate i am a big fan of long series and have had writers die and heartbreakingly suffer from Alzheimer's, yet still produce more work than this guy. His attitude is so cavalier and snobbish - he's had the gall to suggest to fans to donate while playing games on twitch and he will write more. He's taken more than a decade and claimed the whole series was written prior to the first book release. By all means keep waiting but don't defend this douche.
