@xyx7663yeah it's confirmed that Serie was restricting her mana, and she has way more mana than Frieren. Because we know from the fight against Aura that your mana grows according to the time you spent training, and Serie is much MUCH older than Frieren (Serie comes from the mythical era), so that's why she has way more mana than Frieren. Also Lernen isn't the demon king, he's just a very skilled human mage, he's the strongest apprentice of Serie, he's so skilled that he could see through Frieren's fluctuations at first glance, but he still couldn't see through Serie's fluctuations, that shows how good Serie is in hiding her mana

The following is said and intended in kindness to help you find all of the threads you seem to be missing according to your commentary. You will want to rewatch the season, especially around and before the episode frieren kills aura. Serie taught Flemme, Flemme taught Frieren. Flemme and Serie disagreed about Flemme going out and killing demons. Flemme taught Frieren immediately to hide her mana always. It seems to be an innate skill all magic users can use, like softening steps and controlling breathe when sneaking. Flemme took it to extremes to do it always and taught Frieren the same to trick demons. Serie probably had to do it to a lesser extent, though more than normal, to keep adversaries from tracking her down, and so friendlies wouldn't run in terror, but never to the point of extreme of Flemme and Frieren. Serie chases magic for mastery and power. Her obsession rivals that of the demons, though her purpose is mastery and power but not so much to be dominant over others. She seeks to be her vision of a perfect mage with breadth and depth. Her pursuit is that of a passionate scholar. This can be seen in that she cannot turn away a student with potential, even if the student could one day possibly surpass her. She sees the simpler, direct, combat and deception focused practice of Flemme and Frieren as a waste of time and potential, an abuse of magic and the talent for it. She demonstrates human impatience because she seeks the shortest path to mastery of her craft, hiding away from all but talented mages and those with great potential , but doesn't enjoy the journey. After Frieren became proficient, Flemme taught her the spell to make a field of flowers in part to help remind her that magic was more than a tool or weapon. That it could be used in many ways to enrich even small moments in people's lives. This re-ignited Frieren's passion for the possibilities of magic and pushed her to chase after the little spells hidden in obscure corners, something Flemme did as well. This was probably reinforced by all of the running around she did with Flemme, she learned that it wasn't just the magic, but the path you walked to learn it, the story behind a spell's creation, all valuable. Then to have her journey with Himmel really begin with just such a spell, though it took the rest of his life for her to learn, showed that it was that story and the people in it that tied all of magic together. The path taken, and not taken, the people walked with and fought against are the real magic; the spells are tools and weapons, the delights and sorrows, the colors and flavors of those quests and ultimately the very memories of those tales and people that will one day be forgotten. Now Frieren walks that lost path with Fern and Stark, both reliving a past she engaged less in than she wishes, while watching a new unfold in real time before her for the first time with her new companions. Oops. Too many run-ons, and sorry for waxing poetic. Hope that makes sense / helps! Thanks for the content!

@@theghcu you babbled around for so long just to say Serie doesn't hide her mana as much as Frieren LOL. where did you even get this idea, this was NEVER mentioned. can we STOP with this idea that Frieren hides her mana in a more extreme way and Serie just does it in a low-key way because she likes to show off? PLEASE. frieren fanboys need to stop this copium. Serie is MUCH older than Frieren, and as we know it, mana grows according to the time you spent training, so OBVIOUSLY Serie has WAY MORE mana than Frieren. Serie is NOT hiding just a little, this would completely defeat the purpose of hiding your mana anyways, since the idea behind this technique is to be able to make your opponent severely underestimate you and catch them off-guard, so for this to work Serie MUST hide majority of her mana, otherwise it's pointless. Also, despite criticizing the technique, Serie has mastered it to such a level where she's even BETTER than frieren in hiding her mana, since Lernen was able to see through Frieren's fluctuations at the first glance but he couldn't see through Serie's fluctuations even after 50 years by her side.

@@lisakulig3140 First, this is not intended to be an arguement, please don't read it that way. 1) faroh stated in the commentary of the video to the effect that she didn't know where or didn't think that the content explained where Frieren learned to suppress her mana to that extent. I pointed her in the direction of where in the narrative she could find what she missed as a viewer. 2) faroh's commentary indicated that she might not know the some of the causes of the friction between Serie and Frieren. I described some of those relationships and my understanding of the disagreements as presented so far, though I don't claim perfect understanding myself. 3) as presented, the amount of mana visible from frieren at the end of Flemme's life is not significantly different from that initially visible during the last fight with Aura. This would seem to indicate that the radius of emission does not necessarily grow the the total amount of mana. What might have represented 1/10th of Frierens mana in Flemme's time may represent far less than 10% in the present. The radius of emmision seems to change far less than the total mana, implying it is up to control rather than being correlated to total mana. Serie is definitely suppressing a much larger amount of mana than Frieren, but her radius of emission is much larger than Frieren's meaning either she is less interested in doing it and hasn't pushed it to it's limit or she actually has somewhat less control in this one aspect.

@@theghcu no, the mana when Frieren was suppressing down to 10% during her time with Flamme was MUCH smaller than the mana she was showing against Aura. Go read the manga chapter 21 and you'll be able to see. Frieren's mana when she was suppressing in the past with Flamme was so small that it was barely leaking out, but in her fight against Aura it had become much bigger already. Again, read the final pages of chapter 21, from the point where Flamme asks Frieren to control her mana down to 10% for the first time. Also, I already explained to you the reason why Serie's mana is still SO BIG despite her restriction. It's because Serie's mana is RIDICULOUSLY big, to the point where even her concealing it all the way down to 10%, she's still showing that much mana.

Now explaining her "disappointment" comments (both to Frieren and to her human students). First people need to understand this: Serie ADORES POTENTIAL. If she sees potential in anyone, she IS GONNA want to see this potential reach their limits. Ok now here we go: 1) Frieren: the reason why Serie really is petty with Frieren is bc she thinks Frieren is a wasted potential. Frieren literally spent CENTURIES supressing her mana walking in the forest, doing....nothing basically, while the humans were evolving. In Serie's mind, magic is to be used in wars, to fight. In Flamme and Frieren's minds, magic can also be used to bring happiness and beauty to the world (the flower field for example). So for Serie, Frieren is like a genius child that is playing with toys, while they could be doing so much more. 2) Her human students. First i need to clarify: Serie loves each of her students. She is just capping when she is harsh. So, the reason Serie keeps calling them a "disappointment" (and part of the reason she didn't want humans to learn magic) is bc it's also a wasted potential. In what sense, you ask? Well, this is related to their lifetime. In Sense's mind (and she is not wrong in this one) humans CAN NEVER reach their true potential, bc they die too soon. But even so she STILL takes human mages as her students. It's like if you want a 95 years old person to become the greatest professional in their area, for example....you simply have no expectations this person will even reach great achievements. That's why she only takes TRUE talented people as her students. And i do think most people overlooked this: dude, Serie just said Lernen could possibly win against Frieren, like.....that's what i meant when i said she takes really talented people to teach. Also, for people complaining why she failed so many people: if she had passed all of them, she'd basically sending them to their death. They would be allowed in places only first-class mages could reach, and then, if they didn't have enough skills, they could die. So in the end she's doing what she thinks it's right.

Correct on the first-class mage point. People do not understand what 1st classes have to do yet in this world and none of it is easy. You don't simply wear the title, you are tasked to extremely difficult missions from stealth to all out brawls with monstrosities and demons that are more powerful than what a typical mage would encounter. Serie is harsh because she cares, she doesn't want to see a bunch of people going to their death simply because she pleased them in giving a title that means nothing without the skill to back it up.

It's implied that Heiter taught Fern to supress her mana because he had seen Frieren do it and how useful it was and he learned it from her. Fern is so good at it because she's naturally gifted. As Serie said to her apprentices, doing it well requires natural talent or a couple of centuries of practice.

Serie says a spell creating a field of flowers is "useless" yet that spell turned out to be the most powerful spell in the series because it created a connection between Frieren and Himmel and that made Himmel purposely seek out Frieren because he became attached to her. Frieren said that without every person in their party they would not have been able to beat the demon king. It may be a bit of a stretch but the spell that finally defeated the all powerful demon king was a spell creating a field of flowers. Its also important to note that while Serie may like to hate on that spell its funny how she does it in her own room of flowers. :)

Ngl Faroh i'm actually surprised you didn't went on a rant when Serie started to talk all those things 😂 bc i've seen a lot of...let's say..."emotional" people simply hating on her like crazy. I feel like people don't try to understand Serie's character correctly. She is a little difficult to get, but when you let her words aside and look at her actions, you get it: First of all, i love Serie's pettiness🤣. But anyway. Serie is a big tsundere. Let's analyze this calmly: *she said she trained Flamme on whim, but still went on a walk with Frieren just remembering Flamme *she said she wouldn't carry Flamme's will, but she LITERALLY created the magic association *she says it was a waste of time repressing her mana, but she still do it anyway *she said she doesn't like to take human students, but she still remembers every single one of them (Flamme, Sense, Lernen) and even how each of them behave *she calls the flower field spell "useless" while in a room full of flowers (cause she obviously liked Flamme) Serie is not that bad like she herself wants to appear LOL

I don’t think Lernen saw any fluctuations in Serie’s mana because Lernen is her student for half a century if he saw anything he’d have told her long time ago, the reason he saw Frieren’s fluctuations is because he knows she is an elf so in his mind she gotta be at least same as Serie’s mana or a little bit lower than her. If that makes sense.

Recall when Fern demonstrated Frieren’s weakness, Denken wondered why he didn’t notice it when they fought, and then said it was because he never expected such a rookie level weakness in a mage of Frieren’s caliber and so wasn’t looking for such a thing. A similar dynamic could be at play here. Lernen never expected that Serie would ever have need or reason to suppress her mana, and so never really thought to look for it.

Frieren's wording when talking to Himmel is interesting. She says "there are plenty of mages in the Holy City, it didn't have to be me." To which he responds "I wanted you." It reminds me of her conversation with Fern on top of the flower tower when she asks Fern if she loves magic. Fern says she could have chosen any profession, "it didn't have to be magic." To which Frieren responds "but you chose magic."

Serie is just like a tough super-grandma. She is upset with her overachieving "daughter" Flamme not having visited her in life but left a bunch of obligations for her to fulfill at her death. And she's upset with her "granddaughter" Frieren for having potential to be great at school if she only studied harder, but wanting to just chill and hang out with tattooed bikers. But she loved them anyway. She loved all of them. You will see in the next episode. Even Lernen (she called her "that boy," like she called Flamme "that girl" - she called all humans "those children"), she was only giving him the tiger-mom passive-aggressive "push" by expressing disappointment for the child to be shamed into performing better. Yes you're right she wanted him to be more courageous and stop being timid and humble, traits she dislikes - and in the next episode you will see that she's successful in that. You are again correct that she expected Frieren to be strong enough to solo the Demon King. Although Frieren did anyway, Serie saw it as more trick than skill, and Frieren's trick didn't work against the big boss, and she had to do it with a party; that's why Serie remained disappointed in her. The final interview question was like "one more chance: do you promise to study hard now" with an answer of "no I like hanging out with bikers they're cool YOLO."

One thing to add: the “useless” spell also saves the world. Without it, Frieren and her party never join together. As Frieren says, the demon king is only beaten with all of them together. In fact, the technique Flamme teaches Frieren for vengeance, mana suppression, doesn’t even work on him. Instead, flower magic, the only peaceful spell Flamme teaches to Frieren, leads to the demon king’s ultimate defeat. It’s is not hate that brings forth a peaceful era but love.

Remember from when they first arrived in the mage city before the exam started (just before the much memed Fern’s chest blocking out half the sky scene), Frieren actually hinted that she didn’t need to/want to take the First Class Mage Exam at all, and that only Fern passing would be enough for their purposes? Frieren only relented and agreed to take the test too when Fern said she didn’t think she could pass. So basically Frieren entered the exam purely to provide reassurance for Fern, and had not cared from the beginning about her own passing or failing. And she basically treated the whole exam as a chance to have fun and meet new people.

Ironically speaking, since Frieren is based around many Dungeons and Dragons tropes, but the spell that creates a field of flowers, Plant Growth, is far from useless. It´s simply not a spell made to do direct damage, which is a lot of people dont like it. Even in the show, that dude uses it to create plants for his metal petals ability.

In the manga, he doesn’t know that spell. Instead, he always carries a bouquet of flowers with him. The anime giving him that spell (or something similar) is one of the few small deviations the anime made from the source material. But it does foreshadow how the spell turns out to be much more impactful that it seems to be.

Frieren is probably a teenager in elf terms yeah. She was a child when Flamme found her and when she met Serie she looked about the same as she does now, that probably shows that Serie was already an adult by that point and has been around for a lot longer. the elf females we have met are both short and petite but just from their faces and voices you can tell there is supposed to be a big age difference between them.

Serie is literally the level of what you would call a God Mage. Frieren would stand no chance in defeating her, no mage honestly could, however in this series it's not always about who has more power but about who can visualize themselves winning, it's really about belief in ones self and spirit of determination. Serie is powerful in many aspects of a mage and Frieren is powerful in learning the aspects of humanity where Serie can't see what's so good about it. Just like the Demon king, Serie could lose to a well coordinated attack and team, even if she is a walking cataclysm.

Frieren's words, not mine: "even i can't picture myself beating her at all. There is no doubt she reigns supreme over all human mages of this era. She is beyond human's comprehension". I honestly don't know why people think Serie is afraid of humans or even that anyone could even reach her level tbh. No, Frieren could not beat her at all. Serie is, at the moment, the most powerful character in the series after the goddess herself.

  • @Korksbebig

    @Korksbebig

@@JoshuaGrimes-dz4wy I wanted to make this less spoiler for others so spoiler warning for below: 1v1 Serie beats all, but if you're caught up to the manga as it seems you are, a skilled warrior and a coordinated attack could pose a threat to her. It's something I enjoy in this series about checks and balances to power. The demon king was to demons a force that could never be defeated and yet he was, Serie can die to a blade puncturing her heart as anyone else, it's just she has measures to prevent such a thing from happening, if she were caught off guard by someone extremely skilled, which for warriors in this world can be obtained in a humans life time, then she would be in danger, The hero of the south was the stronger of the two heroes when it came to Himmel and him yet he died and knew he was going to, he knew Himmel would be the one to defeat the Demon king instead, this is just again the author showing us how being the strongest isn't always the end. I wouldn't say Serie is afraid of humans, she wouldn't work so heavily with them if she were and she'd certainly not care for mages dying if she hated or feared humans. She simply wants talent that wishes to sore to extreme heights.

Honestly surprising to hear you getting hurtful comments over stuff like that. I feel like you pick up on a lot of the subtleties better than a lot of the other reactors I'm seeing. Namely with picking up on subtext and authorial intent with a lot of these scenes. Speaking as a content creator, I think the thing to keep in mind within the anime reaction niche is that a lot of the audience are young/not the most socially inclined. Obviously comments like that can be draining, so giving a bit of context to the source of the comment can often lessen the negative impact on your mentality. At least, it does for me. Either way, thanks for the reactions thus far.

The last time Frieren upset Fern with her emotional obliviousness, she spent like half the episode confused as to why Fern was upset at all. This time, though she still didn’t get the emotional connection beforehand, the moment Fern got upset, she understood immediately why, and immediately set out to make it right. This is progress. Subtle, but substantial, character development. Also, Stark seems to have leveled up in emotional maturity too.

I think what Serie means when she calls Frieren’s mana suppression “inefficient” is in terms of combat utility against general opposition (ie not demons). Because demons are naturally much more sensitive to mana than pretty much everyone else, you have to much better at mana concealment to fool them. But you don’t need to be that good at it to use it to fool anything else in the heat of combat. So instead of spending centuries perfecting the ability, you could just train at it for a few years, and spend the rest of your time getting better at other types of magic. This recalls the difference between Serie and Frieren, ie that Serie is a warmonger and Frieren is a mage for a peaceful era. Serie values general combat utility. For her, magic is a weapon for fighting, anything and everything. Frieren, however, only really wants to fight demons. She only cares about combat magic inasmuch as it is useful/needed for fighting demons. So she basically specialized her combat skills specifically for fighting demons, at the expense of being significantly less effective in fighting with humans, at least relative to her age. Because she really doesn’t want to fight with humans.

Wish I could say not to mind comments, but that's easier said then done. I could be wrong, but I think the thing with Fern is that she just never got/gets the opportunity to learn how to handle her feelings and analyze others. Heiter was known to be very socially adept, so if anything, he kind of spoiled her. Now that he's gone and she's been traveling with Frieren, who's socially the total opposite, the learning transition has trouble sticking. Also, isn't she like 17?

Serie says the harshest things but her actions states otherwise. For example, while she was mocking flamme when she was out for a walk with frieren, she was showing this memory of her (flamme) running around smiling as a kid, which obviously she was fond of. She also tore flammes will/proposition but look at her now, overseeing this mage certification thingy. In this episode, funnily enough, she asked fern to become her student right after she stated that she shouldn’t take any human students again. Also, you can tell she loves flowers (or at least it has sentimental value to her). Anyway, she gives off a hard exterior but she clearly cares.

tbh it's nice to see the 2 sides of the coin sometimes. Imagine if you read something, and there's a character that is super cool and you like that character....just to a bunch of emotional people come and trash said character bc they are literally blinded by hate that they can't even think straight anymore and keep acusing the character to be "bad" or "evil". It's....frustrating actually. The main reason for that are the mentalities of "stick with the MC no matter what" and "whoever goes against the MC i'm gonna hate". I even saw one saying "who is she to decide who's gonna pass?", like....do you even KNOW who Serie is? So i kinda get it why. I don't agree with spoilling, but i do agree that, if you record yourself talking bad about a character a lot of people like, you ARE gonna get some later, liking it or not. It's expected. It's...natural to happen actually. It'd be easier to try and analyze the situation and the character (like Faroh did here) instead of "oh i hate this character so much and blah blah blah" and literally getting blind by your own thoughts that you can't even TRY to understand the character anymore.

I dont believe that Frieren doesnt understand emotions or people. She doesnt understand that she understands them. In the very first episode she cries because she didnt understand Himmel. But as we see in each and every episode with a Himmel flashback, she actually did. She may not have understood his feelings towards her, but she definitely knew him. Same for Flamme, Heiter and Eisen. She also understands Fren, Stark, Sein and others through her original party. She is wired to think she lacks the ability to know the people around her because of her past but like every flashback shows us, she at the very least understood her friends.
