An Easy Way to Paint People! Pastel Painting Demo
I have always wanted to add people to my landscape paintings but I have been intimidated. I don’t have experience with figure painting and they look so complex! In this video I tackle my fears and paint some figures. I share a tip that helps me when I want to add people to my paintings!
This video was a demo for my Patreon group. In May 2020 We spent a month exploring the addition of figures to a pastel painting. Join us for these lessons!

It’s astounding how much you express with your painterly style, Karen. The man’s baggy trousers, his indecision about which ice cream to get, the lady’s concern for the child, and so much more are all suggested by your magical mark making. Thank you 🙏

i'm grateful to have found you - you are one of the best instructors i've found. you explain what you are doing and why, which i find helps me understand what you are doing. i completely sympathize with you about trying to teach while doing as I have taught art classes in a different medium. i'm trying to stretch myself to see if i might like to use oil pastels, and you are the only teacher i've found in this arena.

Unbelievable how easy you make this seem. I have always been afraid to incorporate people in my paintings because I was too tight and tried to put in too much detail right from the start. Showing how to put in the shapes really helped immensely. You are an excellent teacher and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us. I haven’t painted in a while but you have certainly inspired me to pick up my brushes and pastels and tell my story. Thank you a thousand times!

Thank you Sharon!
This was very helpful. I was trying to figure out a way to have a person walking through a forest path, he being the subject but done so in a painterly way. I think this was very helpful. If you were adding a person who is the focus of the story into a landscape, would you skip doing a complimentary color under wash? It is an autumn scene as well and I wanted to get some pop. Thank you
Can you do more people? ❤ New to your channel! I love it

Welcome!! I do plan to paint more figures also more on my Patreon group! Thanks for watching!
I sure hope the lady with the "crazy plaid" shirt does not feel bad, Karen. lol Loved this video. But very good call, simplify that shirt, for SURE! Yikes.
Don’t mean to be negative. I do like the information you were giving. Maybe pastel artists work on dark paper. I must be used to white paper since I am a watercolorist.
@KarenMargulis

No worries! I usually work on light or white paper but enjoy occasionally working on dark paper for a change of pace. The wonderful thing about pastels is the wide variety of paper types and colors we have to use. Each paper color or choice will give the artist a different effect! You can see the versatility of the papers I use in my other videos! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Karen where do you buy your supplies
@KarenMargulis
Жыл бұрын
I get most of my supplies online through Blick and Dakota Pastels.
Karen, why don't you use a Prospect, or caliper for measuring? I know a Prospect is for increasing or reducing size, but it would work for this purpose as well.

Good idea! I so rarely paint people that the bamboo stick works. This was the way I was taught so I have stuck with it!

@@KarenMargulis I've seen you use it in some of your other videos too; I've watched so many lately I can't remember which ones.
But the tilt of the heads-the initial sketch loses that tilt. . .
Why in the world would you use a gray piece of paper? it is extremely hard to see on the video you’re drawing. why not use a white sheet and black ink.
u ramble too much intro stick to point
