An Assortment of James Reid "My Friend" Knucklers

/ forgottenweapons
James Reid was a Catskills gunsmith who emigrated from Ireland by way of Scotland. He made a number of different revolvers, but is best known for his line of "My Friend" knuckleduster pepperboxes (or "knucklers", as he called them). At the height of their popularity, Reid had 17 employees, and made a total of about 23,000 of these guns. They were available in .22, .32, and .41 caliber rimfire cartridges, with both brass and iron frames. A revolver version with a single longer fixed barrel was available by special order.
In this video, we will take a look at each of the major variants, as well as a special-order revolver model.

One thing I love about these videos is that they offer a sense of scale to weapons that are mostly seen in old reference books. For example, assuming that Ian is somewhere between 3'6" and 7'5" tall, these guns are larger than I would have guessed by just looking at a black and white picture that takes up the same amount of page as a Colt Walker. It's both nice and refreshing to have this added perspective. Thanks!

adamunchy Well, I'm going to Edinburgh mainly to see my little sister, she's studying in a university there. Usually only see her around christmas otherwise, for a few days a year. And because I got the trip for free, basically I only pay for my drinks n' such sundries. Also just to partake in a kind of pub culture my country simply does not have on account of being a younger nation. Make no mistake, I don't spend my time on the Royal Mile gawking at bagpipers, even though I love celtic music(have since a kindergartener, though I'm a Finn). Of course in any country with a tourist market, the most touristy city is the capital usually. I have plans of visiting Glasgow as well, once I can start saving up for that journey. Actually I would love to visit the Outer Hebrides and Orkney Islands too just because that kind of unforgiving seascape and rugged landmasses appeal to me.

Actually me and my father talked about going to Glasgow last time we were in Ed., but we both enjoy museums, art galleries etc. of which there were plenty where we were situated so we didn't have time. I think a daytrip is in order this time around, I've wanted to check Glasgow out for a long time. Thanks for the tip!

If you just drop the thing in your pocket, and you need it in a hurry it's going to come up with a great heap of keys and coins stuck in it and while you're picking that shit out of it the other guy's hit you over the head with a sock full of quarters and all you've done is conveniently locate your most desirous possession for him. This thing, though, it's just a little lump that's a lot less likely to get hopeless tangled with whatever else you have in your pocket. Interesting piece of firearms history. James Reid should have fluted all the cylinders to save weight. That might have led to higher production costs though. Back then people were confident that a .22 rimfire was okay self-defense. I'm not sure how people of that time arrived at that conclusion. Certainly the .32 rimfire was a better defensive round, at the cost of a heavier, larger My Friend. Aluminum had been discovered but its industrial application had yet to be realized. These little pocket revolvers would have greatly benefitted in weight savings by an aluminum frame and a fluted cylinder. In the end, the iconic and simple and inexpensive two, shot Derringer was all that most people needed for a pocket pistol.

He was born in Ireland and raised in Glasgow... yeah designing knuckle duster guns sounds about right. I guess headbutt guns weren't really possible.

It is an odd shape for a knuckle duster, but i guess its a step up from bare hands. Interestingly enough, I found a pattern drawing where it's held upside down compared to the way Ian held it. www.american-firearms.com/american-firearms/z-patent/patent-R/Reid,%20James/51,752-drawing1.jpg Would be fun to see an old west styled video along the lines of the WW1 trench hand to hand video, trying things like this, apache revolvers and skullcracker grips (like the Merwin Hulbert ones).

+Keith Hawkins Original black powder .22 rimfires made about 800 fps or less in a rifle, the knuckleduster was probably around 500fps-600fps with original ammo.
