An Architect’s Own Humble Renovation and Extension

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Sometimes you don't need to do much to have a huge impact, and the home of Melbourne architect John Liu of Inbetween Architecture is a testament to that idea. Their 1970s home had great bones, plenty of natural light, and a fantastic north-facing backyard, but his family was beginning to outgrow the space. After a year of finding the right design, a new main bedroom suite was really all that was needed, with a new entry and corridor to connect the new with the old.
The entry and corridor space is the hero of the home, with John including his cultural heritage of been born and raised in Taiwan with Japanese rituals. This entry space gave John, his family and guests a place to take off shoes before entering, as well as a place to store bicycles, scooters and other larger items. The corridor has a built-in bench seat that overlooks and connects with the backyard, and provides a sunny place where you will often find John working, taking phone calls, having a cup of coffee and his children drawing. This corridor is not just a corridor, it's a space to stop, it's a place to relax. John wanted to explore the idea of the entry and corridor being more than just a place you walk through.

I like that it's 'humble'. I was also a bit over the extreme and expensive minimalism. This looks like a home that people can live in. :)

Except for that kitchen. Although it looks like there's ample prep space for cooking, it's still too small for my liking.

Love how Liu is the Director of Inbetween Architecture and a primary feature of his personal project is the corridor that connects the original structure and the extension. A simple idea but executed so well-I can imagine hanging out on that bench. The way the trees are planted is so smart. You don’t need to put up a solid wall to get some privacy. The trees provide just enough filter-in addition to the foliage, the reflection of the trees on the glass distorts the interior view enough for neighbors not to see exactly what’s going on inside. There’s no need to block yourself off from the world (unless you want to, of course 🙂).

Such a pleasure to see an architect's work that is indeed humble and looks lived in, not like an austere overpriced over engineered display. To me it captures light, space and function beautifully, seems peaceful yet has good energy. I even like that the back lawn wasn't manicured. This is the key to great design. It looks easy to be a part of this home.

Top marks for a good flexible design for the kitchen/ living/ dining space. Having the kitchen as a pod adjacent to the living/ dining allows for future modification to construct a dividing wall and door to separate the kitchen completely. This flies in the face of the current fashion. However recent Covid experience of many people being locked down as a family and even working from home has meant a reappraisal of the disadvantages of having no privacy and separation of functions with a house full of people all day every day fighting to gain private spaces for different equally important functions- cooking, watching tv, listening to music, doing homework, quiet space for relaxing, dining etc all in the same space.

Like as happens on the TV show "The Block" - once Architectural Guidelines are issued, each room needs to be stripped back to its bones & renovated from the inside out, while successfully maintaining the structural integrity of the Building's Frame... Just think of what they are doing with Notre Dame...maintaining as much of the original Architecture as possible while repairing the damages caused...

I see missed opportunities here. The contrast of new addition to old house isn't crisp enough. The old house reads too clearly, that odd facia board, weird window, vertical wood over stucco. It just doesn't have any integrity. Modest changes could fix these problems. White contrast to pale grey isn't enough contrast to read well or interestingly. It's just different. Those little pots in the entry window are silly looking. The art inside is hung without artistic skill. The corridor could have seated two at a table by pushing the pathway over to the wall side. A bench is not a good seating solution.

@@harperwelch5147 Obviously your taste is different from other people's and your opinion is purely subjective too. The architect designed it for himself and he said he is very pleased with the result so that's that. Millions of people upload millions of things on KZread whether they are humble or not. As for him, this is his chance to show his work to a larger audience and I am sure he knows that his work will not be everyone's cup of tea.
