Still waiting for the day when Indians (especially Indian-Americans) get cast in regular roles, and not "the Indian guy". It was laid out pretty well in "Master of None" how much of a problem it is. Indians born and brought up in America are just as American as any White or Black American, yet we get typecast. We walk into a bar, people start jumping to conclusions just because of what we look like. The media needs to CHANGE IT.

I love Dev Patel, so freakin talented. You know, they mentioned photographic memory, and this is just speculation, but if you're traumatized and also seeing new things like being in unfamiliar territory, I think that helps kind of boost your memory, like a survival thing. Like if hormones are running high, or you're scared, you tend to remember things more clearly.

I'm the opposite, I really love hearing about different ethnicities and celebrating diversity. It has almost become taboo to recognise that people have assorted colours just like assorted shapes. I think it could be because we (I'm Canadian but it happens here too) because we're such young countries, it's very easy to know where your family came from so everyone has stories to tell. A lot are still quite close to their ethnic foods and traditions. The city I live in actually has a three day festival in August to celebrate that very thing.

Why on earth is the host asking him about 'being stopped' at the airport...I think he was referring to the beard but it's not even remotely funny. And then he smugly comments, 'I haven't', whilst pointing at his clean shaven white face...oh cringe! Agree with the comment below re American show hosts jumping on comments re ethnicity - it's easy, but a lazy way of making a connection.

  • @Karin_Allen

Well, to be fair, this interview was filmed when Colbert was still finding his footing as a "real" talk show host. He'd spent several years *playing* a buffoonish conservative who hosted a talk show host with real guests who regularly made his character look like an idiot. But then he got a talk show where he could be himself, and this interview with Dev probably came during his first season. At that point, Colbert was still learning how to do "real" interviews. With Dev, he was trying to make a point about racial profiling and white privilege, but it was heavy handed and didn't belong in the interview. Thankfully, Colbert is a quick learner; and he's now one of the best American talk show hosts around... though of course, no talk show host anywhere, at any point in history, will ever come close to Graham Norton's style. ;-)

I don't even live in the US, but I've been stopped and scanned for explosive residue twice. And I've only been on a plane 5 times. Once at Sydney airport and once at Brisbane airport. It's fucking weird. They made me take off my boots and everything. Maybe they pulled me out because I was wearing steel capped boots with casual attire in the middle of the Australian summer, but that's just how I roll, man! But being of Italian heritage and looking Mediterranean probably doesn't help either. Also, I am a metalhead, so I look like a bit of an anarchist, with the denim vest with all the patches and all. I've had heaps of my metalhead friends checked as well. Stereotypes suck.

Dev Patel's Australian accent is flawless by the way. Nice job. Not many people can nail it that well. Props to him. Always like the dude.
