STUNNING VIEWS AROUND MALTA FROM THE AIR AND AROUND THE CITY
Valletta, the capital city of Malta, is a fascinating destination with a rich history and vibrant culture. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980, recognized for its unique architectural and historical significance.
The city was founded in 1566 by the Knights of St. John, a Catholic military order. It was named after Grand Master Jean de la Valette, who led the defence of the island during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. De Valette died from a stroke aged 74 on 21st August 1568 and never saw the completion of his city. His remains now rest in St. John's Co-Cathedral among the tombs of other Grand Masters of the Knights of Malta
Valletta, renown for it’s stunning baroque architecture filled with beautiful churches, palaces, and gardens, was mostly completed by the early 1570s, and it became the capital on 18 March 1571. It was one of the first planned cities in Europe and Its grid street plan was innovative at the time, setting a precedent for future urban planning.
Fort St. Elmo is a star-shaped fort that guards the entrance to Valletta's harbours and has played a crucial role in Malta's defence since its construction in the 16th century. It is now the home of its National War Museum.
One of the most impressive buildings in Valletta is St. John's Co-Cathedral. Completed in 1577, its plain exterior contrasts with its lavishly decorated interior, which includes masterpieces by the artist Caravaggio. Although unadorned, its façade is well-proportioned, being bounded by two large bell towers. The doorway is flanked by Doric columns supporting an open balcony from which the Grand Master would address the people on important occasions. The interior is simply a magnificent exhibition of opulence.
The painting illustrating The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist (1608) by Caravaggio (1571-1610) is the most renowned work in the church. Regarded as one of Caravaggio's masterpieces, it is the largest canvas he ever used and the only one he ever signed.
Valletta is one of the smallest capital cities in Europe, covering approximately 0.3 square miles. Despite its small size, it is densely packed with historical landmarks and cultural attractions.
It forms part of a group of fortified municipalities known as the Three Cities, which also includes Birgu (Vittoriosa) and Senglea (Isla). These cities played a crucial role during the Great Siege of Malta.
The city was named the European Capital of Culture in 2018. This recognition highlighted the city's vibrant arts scene, with numerous festivals, exhibitions, and performances taking place throughout the year.
Situated on the north-eastern coast of Malta, Valletta has a strategic location overlooking the Grand Harbour, one of the best natural harbours in the Mediterranean. Malta’s central location in the Mediterranean also played a significant role during World War II making it a prime target for enemy fire. The city was heavily bombed, and one of its iconic buildings at the time, The Royal Opera House was destroyed.during the blitz. The entire island was awarded the George Cross by King George VI of the United Kingdom in 1942 in recognition of the bravery of its people.
Correction:
06:50 (GEORGE VI NOT GEORGE I, AS I SAID IN THE NARRATION)
Today Valletta stands out as fashionable tourist destination with its picturesque streets, restaurants, café’s and historical buildings that have also made it a popular filming location for movies and TV shows. Notable examples are scenes from "Gladiator" and "Game of Thrones."
Valletta's rich heritage, cultural significance, historical importance and architectural splendour all make it a unique and captivating city to explore.

@ladyintheskyuk Wow, thanks Yvonne. I'm glad it brought back happy memories for you; we certainly made some out there. DJI spoilt the party a bit in Mdina as they locked me out and couldn't unlock it in the time I had. Tm-cad had authorised my flight in the FRZ too! 😝. Thanks for your support matey, means a lot to me. 🤗

@HikeFly22 We were staying in the North of Malta, so never got to see it all lit up, but yes, photo's I've seen are amazing. The other thing is that most places in the EU will not allow night flying. Don't know how keen the local cop's are but didn’t fancy putting it to the test! 🤣🤣🐔🐔
