    Any landing everyone can walk away from is a win, especially when it's a commercial airliner with no fuel. Similar thing happened years later to an Air Transat flight crossing the Atlantic, I think on a flight from Toronto to Lisbon. Rain out of fuel mid way through, in this case due to a major fuel leak from improper maintenanc , and had to land on a US air force base on the Azores islands.

    @@xdemoted it wasn’t meant to be a proper term, it’s a joke. There is a driving style known as Tokyo drifting where you put the car into an intentional skid and essentially drive sideways, hence ‘Canada drift’ BTW this is not crabbing it a slip. Crabbing is very commonplace, off setting drift caused by crosswind by flying into wind to maintain the desired track. What the pilot was doing here was increasing drag by flying sideways, to ovoid overshooting the runway.

    Well because the nose gear had collapsed, the entire plane stood at an angle on the runway/dragstrip, as a result the emergency slides were also at an angle. This resulted is some passengers getting some minor injuries when getting off the plane. But yeah, there were no major injuries in this incident, only minor ones.

  • @barndawg77
    @barndawg774 жыл бұрын

    I really cannot believe you left the most impressive part of the story out: The fact the pilot actually did a huge forward slip in a 767 to scrub off speed while descending to the runway. It had NEVER been done before, (at least in a 767 with no engine power) even during test flights. The plane was also nicknamed the Gimli Glider.

  • @Goabnb94

    @Goabnb94

    4 жыл бұрын

    Every test in a simulator afterward, all crashed. What works in theory doesn't always work in practice, and what doesn't work in theory may work in practice. Could be the simulator isn't perfect either. Of course, going into the simulator you knew the situation and what you were trying to do, and you don't have the stress of trying to save your own life and the lives of everybody on board.

  • @TheCho22

    What is a forward slip? What is a huge forward slip? Why is the fact that there’s no engine power matter? (Might be inferred from first two answers) Asking to appreciate the facts more

  • @Goabnb94

    @Goabnb94

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@TheCho22 I'm sure I'm probably using the wrong terminology, but its when the pilot turns the rudder one way, and the flaps on the wings the other way. So the rudder is trying to pull the plane to the side, and the wings are counteracting this motion. As a result, the plane ends up travelling more on its side. Imagine sitting in a plane seat facing north. You expect the nose to be heading north and the wings east-west orientation, but in a slip the nose might be pointing north-east, the wings northwest-southwest orientation, but you're still travelling north. This procedure is done in gliders or single engine turbo-props where there body is flexible, light and not much instruments or components. It had never been done in a passenger jet, and there was no guarantee it would work, that the plane would remain airbourne, or that the wings could handle the forces and not break up. There was also no guarantee the pilots would be able to pull the plane out of this orientation in order to land. This is also why a lack of engines matter, there is no pulling out of it if things go wrong. There was also no engine power to brake with so they had to drop their speed and still have the right approach to land on the runway.

    Goabnb94 Rudder left, ailerons right. The term you were looking for is called “crabbing”. Looking down from above, the plane faces 15-30 degrees to the left, but continues traveling straight towards the runway. It’s not usually done because it’s never needed to. It was not impressive that the plane held together, it was impressive given how unorthodox it was.

    Hands down, this was the hardest and best pilot performance in my opinion. The video missed an important part: how he slowed the aircarft to be able to land this way. He just turned the airplane 50-60º for a while to have much bigger air resistance, which slow them very efficiently. Only his nationality were wrong to became really famous by it.

There are like 15 guages that indicate fuel level, pressure, weight etc...it was his mistake. However, mistakes happen and he did deserve an honor for saving lives. This is the best Canadian explanation I can think of.

They should have known they were low on fuel long before the engine cut out. That's not a good enough. That's the critical failure. I hope the rules have changed since 1983. That's totally unacceptable. I wouldnt get in my car without a proper fuel Guage, let alone fly a fucking plane with 150 souls on it. Madness. Totally preventable incident here. There's no excuse for that. The conversion issue is irrelevant

    @@the6ix72 Well, a side slip is not ideal to reduce altitude rapidly. If they did not have flaps available, then a forward slip works well - although I don't know how difficult that would be in such a large aircraft. And not using flaps means that it doesn't float as much on ground effect when you straighten the craft out just before it touches the ground.

  • @andrewtaco

    @andrewtaco

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@buggsy5 yes true. That is very true. But here's the thing, flaps dont give the plane a "floating" effect, flaps are there to increase lift but also drag a the same time. Which is ideal on landing but it was impossible to lower in their situation since flaps are controlled by hydraulic fluids and not electricity.

    This brought to mind a near series of catastrophes that occurred to a major US carrier in the 80s I worked for. A faulty software change to the floating point logic that governed fuel use was installed in the system that predicted fuel use in flight plans, and planes throughout the US were reporting running out of fuel far short of their destinations. Fortunately, they all made alternate sites, the problem was identified, and the software removed. One of the scariest scenarios I experienced in my 34 years there.
