An Affordable Muscle Car | The 2001 Mustang COBRA

Check out this affordable modern classic muscle car, the 2001 Ford Mustang COBRA. With it's 32 valve, V8 hand built 4.6L engine putting out 320 horsepower form the factory, this was a great project car or to keep stock. I'll review the tasteful modifications and upgrades I made over the 10 years I had owned the car. This is the predecessor to the 03-04' COBRA 'Terminator' and the last of the naturally aspirated engines to carry officially the 'COBRA' badging from Ford.

    @@waspcosm1c901 That's an OK price for a COBRA, but that's a lot of miles. I'd probably want to do a compression test and see how the engine internals are doing before buying a car with high mileage. Also, be prepared for things like IRS suspension bushings, transmission, A/C, and electronics too when over 100k. That's in addition to the normal stuff like brakes, pumps, belts, cooling, intake, clutch, etc.. If your handy and don't mind working on cars it's will be a good car to enjoy. However if breakdowns, and mechanical fixes aren't your thing I'd probably steer clear. I'd also offer $3800-$4k with that many miles unless it's immaculate and has all maintenance done. Thanks for watching! 🛠️

    I totally agree the way to get one of these is close to stock if possible even if they have some miles. The ones to be careful are the heavily modified or younger drivers that probably ran them too hard and might be buying a clunker. These will always be in the shadow of the 03-04' Terminator and hence cost much less. My recommendation is to open up your search radius country-wide and be open to traveling to go get a car or have it shipped. You might find some older person selling a stock 01' COBRA 800 miles away on the cheap and worth it to fly there 1-way and drive it home or have it shipped. Thanks for watching! 🛠️

    The powered by svt coil covers are 07-14 gt500 covers. Everything is interchangable between all 99 up 4v weather its 4.6, 5.4 or 5.8. Theyre all mod motors. Alot of guys put these gt500 covers on 99-04 cobra and 03-04 mach even tho machs arent svt they had an "svt engine" i guess is the thought process.

    I own an 07 gt500 and i am about to purchase another stockish 97 cobra to fix up. I used to hace a 97 cobra and 03 mach i love the 4v engines. I understand totally what you mean about the gauges. The 07-09 gt500s gauges were kind of hard to read in the daytime under certain condition and these are not at all. The white face was actually a nice touch they should have continued that. But at night i can see the gauges awesome. These are very cool im a big fan of all 4vs. These can be made better than a terminator with forged rods and an aftermarket piston. I mean engine wise. Theyre low key slept on all na 4v were. They could outrun lt1s and run with ls1s of the day with 4.6 liters. This engine should have been in the gt and the cobra should have got the 5.4 4v like the r got. They would have smoked gm and sent them to the drawing board long before the terminators came out.

    That would have been amazing if the 5.4L was in the base COBRA! Yeah I still have issues seeing the guages on my 09' during the day especially if shaded it's just too dark. I agree the 01' NA engine is a sleeper and totally overlooked to the Terminator. It can get some serious HP as you say!

    Yeah I had the upgraded gas pedal (like the whole part with the arm), but never assembled the set nor installed. I preferred the grip of the plain rubber pedals. I tell you the white face guages are something I actually prefer to my current 09' GT500KR's dark guages that are difficult to see and read. Thanks for watching! 🛠️

    Might be looking at a Laser Red Cobra today or tomorrow. Let's hope this one doesn't have a bent frame! (seems to be a common problem on foxbody platform cars. 😂)

  • @TheEclecticHandyman

    Good luck it's a great car! Technically 79'-04' were all built off the Fox Body platform, but commonly only the 79'-93' Mustangs were referred to as 'Fox Bodys.' The 94'-04' were considered SN-95s. I'm not super aware of bent frames on the SN-95 generation Stangs, so hopefully those woes were more relegated to earlier versions as I mentioned.

  • @murkinstock

    @murkinstock

    10 ай бұрын

    @@TheEclecticHandyman That is correct. I guess Ford called the 94-04 the Fox-4. Anywho, I had a 1988 GT and the driver side frame was bent, and I recently looked at a 1999 Cobra and it too was bent. I just don't have good luck, but I understand they're a bit fragile as well.

    The 99 cobra ordeal wasnt nearly as big a deal as everyone made it out. All it was was intake manifold casting issues and sonething with the original catback causing it to lose power. Its not like it had worse flowing heads or down on compression this is super simple to fix the reason the 2000 outside the r was canceled was because they were fixing the 99s. All they did was port the intake and swap the catback to push them beyond the oroginal 320 hp mark. An 01 with the exact same stuff will make the exact same power. There is alot of misinformation out about this or guys who just really dont understand what the issue was. A 99 with ported intake and fbo will make same power as an 01 with the exact same stuff.

  • @TheEclecticHandyman

    Yeah I don't think I misrepresented this information here, but it's well documented that Ford had egg on their face when it was discovered via Car and Driver, BlueOval, and other COBRA owners that dyno'd their cars. Fix was mechanically simple for 99' owners but the byproduct was a hurdle. It was a big deal the marketed HP was wrong and to skip an entire production year (sans 00' R) due to fixing it wholesale. It's well documented including in the book 'Powered by SVT,' that there was not enough capacity at the plant available to produce intakes for both the service fix and for production vehicles at the same time resulting in a cancelation of the entire 2000-model COBRA run. In the world of auto manufacturing, yeah it was kind of a big deal. Ford made the right call and 01' sales were much improved, but had they done it right out of the gate, they would of had a 2000 COBRA as well.

    I actually never had it dyno'd but between the race tune, LT headers, intake and other bolt on upgrades I was probably close to 350HP up from the stock 320HP. To really bump that up I'd have needed to do forced induction which they do make for the car (Vortex) but I never made that investment.

    @@TheEclecticHandymanif it is fbo tune its prob 315-320 rear wheel hp. That is about what they make fbo tuned with cams you can do like 370. The stock crank is forged the block is pretty strong so with forged rods and pistons can take 800+ wheel easily.
