I have found that those flexible cable style gun safety locks work perfectly for securing the gate latches. Not only does it keep the dog from opening the latches, it keeps neighbors from being able to open the gate easily as well.

Craigslist is a good place to keep an eye out for the heavy duty, old school dog kennels that don't rust. We got some huge ones that are indestructible, really cheap. You will have to construct something for the roof but thats an easy fix. They clean up easily with a pressure washer. We have used them for big dogs, turkey pens, our pigs when they were babies, all kinds of stuff lol.

I bought that same kennel off amazon, the only issue I've really had with it is the dog dug under the edge within the first week and escaped, so i built a raised floor with free wooden pallets. I just filled in the gaps on the pallets with scrap wood and shortened a few of the pallets so i could cover the entire interior area of the kennel. Then i bought some artificial grass from local hardware store and stapled it to the top of the wooden pallets, so the floor is actually comfortable for him to lay on. Then i put a small dog house in the corner along with a outdoor rated dog bed inside for him to lay on if he wants. The nice part about the raised floor is he cant escape anymore, its easy to clean with the waterhose and keeps him from getting all muddy when outside in the kennel. Friend of mine bought the same kennel also after i got mine, but instead of a pallet wood floor, he poured a cement pad to the interior dimensions of the kennel sloped, so it cant have standing water or urine on it, but his dog never walks on the cement during the day due to it getting to hot from the sun vs my setup, so it lives in the dog house during the day in the shade.

For my dog pen the fencing would eventually wear a hole in the tarp covering. To prevent this, I took pool noodles and split them. I then placed them between the top rails and tarp. I enjoy all your videos. Enjoy your Lab puppy. I used to have a couple of wonderful yellow Labs.

If you make triangle tarps to cover the ends of the kennel it will increase the shade created dramatically. The can sew the tarp with any sewing machine and use grommet kit to attached grommets for zip ties or bungees to go around the pipe. I would have it be roughly the same length to match the over hang on the roof tarp. This way you still get a good breeze.

  • @smimatt1983

If you want extra support for the roof just go to your local Lowe's or home Depot or Menards and buy a piece of straight pipe that's meant for chain link fence in the same size and just buy some more of those connectors you can add as many as you want. And when it comes to the chain link tensioning hooks just bend the hook over the little metal rod so that way it can't slide out

This is pretty cool. I get that it’s not as heavy duty as a standard metal fencing and I get that it’s cheaper to have a long piece of fence but because it pops apart so easily with those tabs I would really like to see the chain-link pieces the individual panels, that way if you ever wanted to take it down and move it to the outside of your property it would be very easy to pull apart and reassemble. I’m guessing that that would bring up the cost quite a bit. Another thing that’s cool about this is it’s pretty light weight, you could add some chicken wire and it would be pretty good chicken tractor. I do like the two center supports but I agree they should’ve put at least four more in so you could have one on each corner. My sister’s dog had a kennel about the size and we had to get pavers and make a floor in it because he would just dig holes to get out. Eventually he learned how to you flip the pavers over.😂 I think a big dog is going to be able to get out without major modifications anyway but hopefully with the puppy you’ll get it trained well enough and have it around the animals enough to where you want the dog out when you leave to keep an eye on things and you won’t need a kennel. I think they’re good for keeping a dog in for a while and training it as he grows up but I hate it when people just leave their dogs in those all the time, it just seems kind of cruel to keep it permanently in a tiny little space like that. You’re clearly not doing that and I think it’s good for people to see if that’s how you use a dog kennel and it’s not just a place to keep your dog all the time.

Hi Andrew. SUGGESTION: what about using straps, that are used to go over a Poly greenhouse, to hold the tarp from flopping in the wind and using those screw-into-the-ground things (that are used to attach a dog's cable or chain) to attach the straps to, might also keep the whole kennel from flipping? Good luck and God bless.

Mounting it higher was a good idea. I had a lab and she figured out how to open the gate, it was really annoying because I had to put a bungee cord over it to hold the latch down so he couldn’t push it up so every time I went to the gate I had to deal with a bungee. "Sorry about the heavy breathing, I'm fat and this is heavy", story of my life bud. 🤪🤣🤣🤣 PS. I use hurricane tie downs so the wind doesn't pick it up and carry it away. Yes, my GSD's can/have popped those latches. We have basically had to "hurricane" proof ours now due to well GSD working breeds. Cement floors, fence toppers, gate latches etc....although labs are bred "crazy" now, they're much less "crazy" than police dogs. 😂

Andrew 2 suggestions. Put 1 foot square pavers on ground set kennel on top …stops dog digging out cause got to tunnel 1 ft before escape also when dog bigger add 2nd paver each corner, center, and gate opening to raise bottom pipe off the 1st layer of pavers so 1-2 inch gap. No deterioration of bottom Pipe. Also add 2-3 rows pavers inside pen where gate is so not open gate right to mud. You have a landing spot to stand on if enter pen and close gate behind you Gate latch attach to gate.. you want latch out of way when enter exit will hit shoulder so put latch on gate add quick link and short piece of chain to top and bottom of gate so dog not push out bottom of gate cause only got to rack gate out of plum a little to get out. Later if no longer use for dog but planter boxes. Put plastic pallets down for a floor so no mud and grass control Bad tarp. Use a sun screen netting will allow water thru because tarp will accumulate water puddle on roof between peak and top plate of wall and collapse pen due to weight

LOL...First mistake I've seen you make :) You didn't consult me on the dog kennel LOL...Tractor Supply sells OUTSTANDING welded wire kennels that I use both indoors and outside that have latches you can clip shut. Dogs can't chew or rip the heavy wire. I'd set the kennel beside the house under the roof by the laundry room so he can never ever dig out, or at least under the big barn where rain won't effect the tarp and sun won't kill it. Set the edge up on flat concrete blocks and he can't dig out. Unfortunately, huge, strong breeds like labs can easily rip that cheap wire fabric when they get bored.

I've had German Shepherds in a pen similar to this and they destroy it. I hope it works for you though! I'd pack this pen up and send it back to Amazon. Then go to Tractor supply and buy a good one. Guys your missing the point here, I've never owned or never will own a dog the requires a full time kennel. This is for puppy stage only as I work around the property or go run errands. Once my dog reaches adulthood I fully expect to have put the time, attention, training and expectations into the dog to no longer need a kennel. It'll probably be turned into a chicken area or goat nanny pen. I don't personally know of any of my friends that have to kennel their labs as adults. They turn into porch and yard dogs.

Oh I understand, this was a quick and cheap situation for basically being a baby pen. If I was thinking about a kennel for life I'd build my own with posts, a metal roof and concrete.

Why are you putting the kennel so far from your house 🏡, poor little baby will be scared to death, I bet Tiffany will bring him in the house to watch TV with her and I bet you a dollar she gets him his own little bed lol lol 😂

Naaa, he isn't going to be a inside dog. The kennel is going by the trees because that's the only shady spot during the heat of the day. I can't put the poor guy out in the sun while it's 100 degrees.

You should have adopted a puppy from a shelter instead of being the guy that needs a pure bread. Smh

You adopt a puppy from the shelter. He can do as he wants.

Meanwhile we have a rescue at home, think how you wish. I desired a dog with specific traits that I was looking for. Find me a 8 week old lab in any of my local shelters. We looked for a few months, not happening.
