    I love your garden! Ive been binge watching & subscribed as I only found you today. Such an interesting fact about the holey veg! I'm on the surf coast so I'll be trying to source some of the beautiful unusual varieties you produce. Definitely a white mulberry and the champagne fruit tree 🌳

    So glad to have connected with you Jo 😊. The mulberry and babaco should do very well on the surf coast - you should be able to get both from online mail order suppliers 💚

    Such an informative video. I love how the plants grow on the edge of the beds too. My gardening skills are a total disaster but I do enjoy watching other people getting creative in the garden.

    The scarlet runner bean resprouts? So do you cut the plant back in the off seasons and use the arch for something else until it regrows?

  • @MelbourneFoodforest

    @MelbourneFoodforest

    2 жыл бұрын

    Scarlett runner bean naturally turns yellow in winter and the leaves fall, we don't really need to cut it back as it's intertwined in the arch and difficult to cut back. Just mulch the roots heavily. You could certainly use the arch to grow purple pod peas or snow peas, but our yard is too shady in winter, so we don't bother planting anything on that arch in winter. If you plant on top, just add lots of compost, top up the soil and plant straight onto it.

    @@MelbourneFoodforest thank you! I’m thinking of growing scarlet runner beans with my new passionfruit vine that’s in full sun and has started climbing an arch, would that work?

    @@urbanrat84 It might work for one season while they're young, but both are quite vigorous and grow over spring summer so I would only recommend planting one plant per arch.

    I see that you have a website where you sell seeds. How can you ensure that the seeds are true to type when you have so many varieties of each plant type all growing together? 🤔

  • @MelbourneFoodforest

    @MelbourneFoodforest

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Marisa there are many ways to prevent cross-pollination - many varieties are self-pollinating so they rarely cross. In addition you can use containment netting, staging in time and position. We share many of these tips in our Corn Masterclass (kzread.info/dash/bejne/pGh5wcOtp5jQZ5s.html) as different varieties of corn readily cross-pollinate 💚

    How do you keep the white butterflies and birds out of your garden?

  • @MelbourneFoodforest

    @MelbourneFoodforest

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Damien, white butterflies roam free in our garden. They only tend to attack brassicas and our brassicas are already quite established large plants by summer so still do ok, some holes but perfectly edible and as I explain the video research suggests imperfect plants have health benefits. We net the lower hanging fruit to keep the birds out, you can see it in action in our Berries video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/dHxomsONlpvMdbA.html) - I'll also be doing separate videos just on pest management including netting 💚

    Hi Kirsten, we get our seeds from so many different seed sellers but we do love Diggers Club and theseedcollection for your basics. Don't forget a good seed swap with other gardeners too. We then have to go to US seed catalogues for the more unusual varieties 💚
