An abandoned diamond mining town in Namibia [S5 - Eps. 42]

In this episode, I am exploring the ghost town of Kolmanskoppe and learn a lot more about the diamond history here. It is absolutely mind-blowing to see and hear how things went down here a century ago, especially knowing how diamond mining is still going on today in Namibia and South Africa!

The black races invaded Southern Africa from the northern tropical regions and ousted the original inhabitants [The San peoples] As they moved further south they came up against the Dutch [Boers] and British colonials who were moving north from the Cape and were in turn conquered [but not exterminated as the San were]. The German colonials moved into the area [known now as Namibia] in the latter stages of the colonial era and lost it due to reparations after WW1. There is a golf course outside Lűderitz, popular with tourists, without a single blade of grass! When the wind blows, the sand dunes can move within hours across the road and cars caught unawares have overturned this way. When caught in a sandstorm, cars have arrived in Lűderitz without a speck of paint on the side from which the wind blows. The first Portuguese to reach Namibia was Diogo Cão in 1486, where he is believed to have died at Cape Cross. There are hundreds of shipwrecks along the Namib coast, and tales of survivors dying of thirst trying to cross the desert. The oldest wreck, that of the Portuguese ship Bom Jesus of 1533, was discovered in 2008 in the restricted diamond area 20 km north of the mouth of the Orange River.

Oranjemund is the real diamond town of Namibia where the whole town was enclosed and no one could visit there without a permit for security clearance which had to be applied for well in advance if you wanted to visit family or friends. Consolidated Diamond Mines (CDM) took very good care of their staff, free housing and many other perks. It was a wonderful safe place to grow up in as a kid as there was hardly any crime. All people who lived there were employed by the mine.
