My brother has had many difficulties in life due to his autism… but rest assured he has a beautiful wife and brand new daughter. Hope that helps to know as well … :)

I'm so grateful for people like Amy, who speak out for Autism Spectrum Disorder. My little bro committed suicide last year, at 21, after a life long battle with both ASD (formerly Aspergers) and depression. We need more awareness for both conditions.

So sorry for your loss. I agree about the need for increased awareness. I know people with ASD and there's a mix of 'success' in fitting in with the wider society. Many find their own place and sadly, others do not.

They’re so right about autism and it’s the same with Asperger’s. My son and I were both diagnosed with it. Me in my 60’s and he was around 39. I never understood my certain behaviors and his, unsociable, feeling different than the rest of the world, hard to keep a relationship, etc.. it helps your self esteem to know it’s not entirely your fault.

It's time we embrace neurodiversity. Autism is a neurological difference, not a defect. We need to get beyond our neurotypical assumptions just like we need to get beyond our heterosexist assumptions.
