The highway 70 CO from Denver going west ,near Glennwood Co has one of longest bike path along the river under the roadway , train in one side of the river and the road in the other side just beautiful. The High way 70 itself is double level from time to time with that the bike path closer to the river is some thing else . The view from the train should be amazing. Glenwood Spring has hot spring swimming pools (several large ones) , water rafting company , and ,......

21 Days and I will be boarding this train in Chicago and going clear to Emeryville California. I've been waiting to do this since October. Just to sit and look at the scenery and not have to drive will be wonderful.

I like the rear view of your train going through the Rockies. I've traveled that way a lot during recent years in January going from west to east. On other routes I've gotten rear videos. Going along the Ocean on the Coast Starlight is one train I got quite a few video rear views.

Very nice video with beautiful landscape of mountains of Colorado. I have a question, namely: What is the average speed of the train from Denver through Granby, Glenwood Springs and Grand Juction up to the borders of the state of Colorado? In this section of track train goes through the mountains and kept under video that velocity estimate to 40 mph/h. So I want to ask this and thank you in advance for your answer :-) PS: Sorry for my English, but I'm from the Czech Republic and the English can not, therefore, use the internet translator :-)

xkirovt I don''t really know exactly, but it wasn't very fast. I'm guessing about 35-40 mph.

xkirovt I just rode this train through the Rockies a few weeks ago, and according to my GPS which I brought along the average speed was about 25 mph.

+xkirovt West of Glenwood Springs, all the way to Price, Utah, the topography is flat and except for a few curves goes mostly full speed. Really goes fast between Rifle and Grand Junction, then gets fast again around Green River. I once rode a detour through Wyoming between Salt Lake and Denver, and that route is MUCH MUCH FASTER than the Rio Grande route. Amtrak assumes passengers want scenery instead of speedy travel, so we're forced to go slow through curves and high grades. The grades start right after Arvada, then you hit that horseshoe turn.

A "roomette" on the California Zephyr was a waste of money. The food in the dining car was nothing to brag about, either. A 10 hours' wait for the connecting Coast Starlight in Sacramento proved living hell. While the temperature in the city climbed to a solid 103º there was no AC in the station and the two fans did little to guarantee survival mainly to the senior travelers. Let's learn something from the Europeans and the Japanese, okay?

Cracovian Crusader Believe me, ordinary trains in the Czech Republic (where I come from), do not have air conditioning. We're not so big country like the US, but the train service many times not terribly good. Long-distance trains and international trains you already have some level, but ordinary passenger many times not.

First of all, the food isn’t bad, it’s not what you would get from a steakhouse but it is definitely not bad. Second, why would you spend ten hours waiting at a station meant for short transfers. You could have explored the city.

Who carved the face in the rock at 21:20 - 21:22? At 21:22 look just left of the top of the telegraph pole to locate the beard. Going vertically from the tip of the pole takes you to the corner of the mouth, moustache, cheekbone and left eye. You should see the face of a frontiersman with a beaver hat.

West of Denver/Golden. It jumps around differing segments of Gore Canyon (east of Kremmling) and Glenwood Canyon (east of Glenwood Springs). However, you can't go wrong with ANY section of the ride from Green River, Utah all the way to Denver. So many spectacular sights to see eastbound or westbound. (California Zephyr)
