Even though you didn't hit your sub-3-hour goal mate, your determination and passion for running have inspired so many, including me. Your journey has been a big part of my own running and health journey. Keep pushing, and I have no doubt that you'll achieve that sub-3-hour milestone in the future!

That’s really nice to read. Much appreciated. Hope you get to take on some big personal goals yourself. I love it when people get inspired, running is such a good thing.
The ‘wonderful wu’ will be back to hit that sub 3! Been great following your journey. Should still be proud of such a great run. 👏🏼

Thanks mate. Good to share the road. You did great.
Well done Will! With everything stacked against you, lack of sleep, bringing up a baby, tiredness from cancelled flight, covid, horrible weather, and even falling over... you are consistently performing as good as your other attempts! As with other running goals you've had: sub 20, sub 40, sub 1.30, it's just a mental barrier (like kofuzi). But when you're finally able to overcome it... it'll be amazing!

Cheers Ken! Yep a crazy rollercoaster ride and I’m happy with it. I can take alot of pros from this. Just need to figure the cramp out.
Well done William. Two things/sayings spring to mind ...... 'We choose to do things not because they are easy, but because they are difficult.' Also, 'one of the most wonderful things on this earth is the unexpected kindness of strangers.'

Thank you so much. Happy I could at least try to the end. Better than walking back.
Obviously do what's best for you/the fam, but I for one would totally be watching if you do decide to make another series - you are extremely likeable, relatable, knowledgeable and honest. And, although it shouldn't matter, I like that you're northern too 😉. You described it as having failed again - but considering that you are father to a young baby, that you had covid, and that your training block didn't go as well as you'd have hoped, you totally didn't fail mate

Cheers man! Really nice words of support. I’ll be back eventually just need to figure out what’s next.
That was some awesome mental fortitude to get after it, after those cramps. Your time will come! Keep chasing that 2:59! I've been following your series through my own preparation for a sub 3 attempt at Yorkshire, this year, and it was a huge inspiration at points in the block that I needed it. I got really lucky with everything just being perfect on the day, and managed to scrape under so I wanted to say thanks for your part in that!

Well done. Yorkshire can be a tough course, especially if there is headwind on the long open stretch that double backs on it self. Great job!
Way to dig deep and find something to finish strong. You are so close to the sub 3 but I think removing that stress and running to just run for the pure joy of it will actually get well under that goal now that your 40! I ran Chicago marathon a few weeks ago with a aim of 3:05 to BQ. At mile 25 I started throwing up and had to stop and missed my time by 1 min. Just have to enjoy the grind and hit the road again!

Gutted for you Will. When I saw the video pop up and then it started with you on the ground, I thought OH NO! Not again! But the passion and belief and courage you showed to get up at 39 was quite something. The marathon is such a hard race isn't it? Really, really well done.

Absolutely, it goes to show no matter how you feel during the marathon , you can never be sure what will happen at any given time. Thanks for the support
I've just nipped back for a 2nd viewing... Absolutely brilliant story well told. Numbers drive you crazy don't they - I just hope this hasn't deterred you from having having another go. A 3hr marathon is something that most of us in the 1% club can only dream about, which probably puts you in the 0.2% club! Well done mate, wonderful achievement considering your mad 2023. There must be something about that final 400m, as last year coming round the final bend I saw someone receiving CPR - and it was horrific to witness. As you say - seeing something like that puts it all in line. A brilliant vlog mate, not the outcome you wanted but probably my fave video of yours!

Thanks Andy, I’m happy to get the seal of approval from yourself as you make great videos with awesome editing. It was hard to try portray the rollercoaster of emotions from the day, so I’m happy with how it ended up even though the result wasn’t ideal. It’s hard to remember that the most important thing is the journey and not the numbers, especially in the heat of it all. It sure does feel fast on the track! We all inspire each other and hopefully we can meet at a event one time.
Dude. We were on a shake down run and said hi near the Amsterdam Zoo. Three of us. Sorry you didn’t break the three.. keep up the good training. I was miles behind with a 3.07 but Gary and Allen got 2.52 and 2.54 😡

Well done,. unlucky but great effort!! Sure that you have plenty of time to crack that Sub 3 if you want it enough Will 👍 I am 50 in March and I also ran a PB of 3:10:31 in Amsterdam, giving me a 14 minutes and 29 secs Boston Qualifier for 2025 🙂 Still believe that I can possibly go quicker but know that I will probably have to keep pushing to knock a couple of quick ones out each year and keep my fingers crossed 🤞 at my age. Sub 3 would definitely be my ultimate aim and if I ever managed to run just one of them then I would happily run any future Marathons for fun only.

Fantastic effort fella, those splits show how strong you are, you even said how strong you felt at the finish, banishing your 35km demons. Cramping and specific muscle fatigue can be overcome, you’ve got the speed! Great video Will as always and it made me think fondly of doing Amsterdam in the past. The 3 times I’ve done it was great weather on the day and the day before was awful - sorry it seemed the other way round this year! I think as much as you were disappointed at not breaking sub 3, no-one watching this will think you have ‘failed again’ as you said in the video. Instead all of us are seeing you so tough and resistant to get back up after your cramp and finish strong and we all have massive admiration for you. Your spirit is superb and i for one think you embody what this thing we all do is all about! You will get that sub 3 and next time it will be perfect weather and you will do it incident free! Oh, and congrats to your bruv too - awesome stuff!

I feel if you had all your ducks in a row - nailing a training block from start to finish, good regular sleep, hassle-free travel, good conditions on race day and avoidance of cramp, you'd be around 2:50. If you'd taken even one of those out of the equation this time you'd have been comfortably under 3. Keep on keeping on, as the tagline of another channel (not Ben Parkes) says 😂

Hey dude good running - I was grey under armour cap/ black vest - we crossed similar time. I missed out by 50 seconds too, but always good reason to come back. I felt course was pretty tough for a fast time - weather, super busy, and pinch points made it hard to get into a rhythm
@TheWu
8 ай бұрын
Ah very close, I’m sure we will both crack it next time. I thought the course is fast but similar to England the risk is the climate and unpredictable weather. Valencia in dec is cool weather and almost always dry I think so that could be a good choice instead of Amsterdam.
Amazing achievement in those conditions and while you were still recovering from illness! It is tough to get that close - only time will tell if the itch comes again. It's so obvious that sub3 is in the cards!

Mate, what an epic finish! Double-leg cramp came a-knocking for me at 37K, which was devastating as my head and heart were still in it. Going to try taking on more salt in the days leading up to it. On the bright side, your fitness is clearly there. Just the cramp which needs solving.

Thank you. Yea a few people gave mention salt chews, I’ll look into it. I got the fitness to pass 35km feeling confident of holding pace but need to figure why I cramped so bad.
Very disappointed for you to have come so close again, if you get a bit of luck the next time I could see you comfortably doing it. I have been following you from the start of this training block as I too prepared for a go at sub 3 in Amsterdam. Was great to have someone similar to compare to but couldn't believe how much things went against you. I got my sub 3 and was delighted, but disappointed for you. I have no doubt you're well capable of that too. My 12 year old son also watched you over the past few months. He watched the marathon from the stand and was able to show me a short video he got of you crossing the line. I had been looking out for you beforehand but that hail shower meant that keeping sheltered was the main priority! Best wishes Will with your next venture.
@TheWu

Ah well done you! Sometimes things just don’t go the way we want on race days or for me those pesky taper weeks seem to be a real problem haha. At least I was happy with how I finished, I did take a few positives from the run but also some new problems I need to figure out like why I cramped so badly. Hard to know if it was a lack of strength work or not enough salt electrolytes or just because I was already fatigued in my body from the week before with covid. I’ll be back once I decide what and where I’ll be doing it. Thanks for the support.
Great effort mate. Well done! I really think you have this in you. Keep believing. I'm also 39 and due to become a dad so wondering how all these things will effect my marathon training block for London. Your journey really has been great inspiration.
@TheWu
9 ай бұрын
Congrats 👏🏽, it was really challenging at the beginning, it isn’t easy for sure and probably the hardest thing I’ve done in the first few months of becoming a dad. However it all depends on the baby, some are much easier than others and sleep better too.
Ah man. I also ran this race, and got cramp in both hamstrings basically within view of the stadium. It was cramping weather. Thankfully it happened as I was going round a roundabout, so the barrier was in front of me and I could catch myself on it and go straight into stretching them out rather than having to pick myself up off the floor. It probably cost me 2 minutes stretching out and shuffling the last 800m, but thankfully not enough to cost me sub 3 in my 1st marathon. I genuinely feel guilty saying that, knowing what you've been through and how close you've come. If I'd have cramped with 3km to go instead, I doubt I'd have found the strength to do it. But if you do really want it, 40 is no age to be giving up on sub-3. It's well within in your locker and seems like you had a challenging training block and taper this time round with lack of sleep and illness. Train to go 2:50 and you'll beat 3:00 with ease :). Only get back into it when you're ready though, don't feel pressured by viewers. I didn't see the collapsed runner on my way out of the stadium, so they must not have been there very long by the point you saw them. I hope they are ok
@TheWu

Wow sounds like you had a epic dramatic finish too. It would be gutting to get cramp just within the stadium! Good running though you got it! I’m not giving up for sure but just not sure what I’m doing and where and when. Need some time to reflect.

@@TheWu so I did jack all s&c in my block (I will be changing that going forward) but I’d say definitely do more of it, but also your body would have been zapped from Covid and the residual illness so there’s definitely something about that as well. Yea seemed like nothing happened to my favour this time. But I took a lot of pros from this experience too. Thanks for the comments
So close mate. You just need a good race execution, you’ll smash 3hours 💪 don’t forget your compensation claim for flight delay. With 3 of you travelling, that’ll be a nice little bonus 😉

@@TheWu yes, amazing race: pros: flat & not crowed. Cons: A lot of 90 / 180 corners. But overall a great race & people ...
Oh no, just like Mattruns18 's mishap at Mcr marathon.

Yep, the cramp devil really got us! Matt and myself will learn a lot from this and adapt for future attempts.
Real shame, but shows you have it in you for the sub 3! Next time mate.

@@TheWu I did a long run in the Amsterdamse Bos with him not to long ago and recognized the face.. If you look at the results for the Antwerp Marathon 2023 ( BIB n°2291) you can find his name ;-)
You are young, my friend! Get a coach, find a raceday hydration/nutrition strategy that works for you, and put together a training block that's harder than raceday. You got this!

I have been looking at maybe a coach just not sure about it. In two minds if to try it again myself as it would be such a good feeling to crack it myself but then maybe it’s the missing key.

I dont know Wu but have you got enough salt before and under the marathon dear, ?? Inga Dk.

I had plenty of hydration and fuelled well. More than the average runner who was going for sub 3 as nearly everyone i spoke to don’t take a extra bottle like I do and just take water from the course.
