Ampero Stomp II vs HX Stomp vs GT 1000 core: which one to buy? (vs Plexi & Deluxe Rev & effect comp)

Музыка

In this video we will share a direct comparison between the Ampero Stomp II, versus the BOSS GT 1000 core versus the Line 6 HX Stomp. And this is the most extensive comparison video I have ever done, by far. First of all we will share a demo song hearing the 3 units in action, then we will hear more sounds in a dedicated section of this video where we will compare the units against a Plexi for overdriven tones and a Fender Deluxe for clean tone, checking out the frequency response, the dynamic range management, the note envelope, etc. Then we will also compare the effects of these 3 units, and finally I will give you my 2 cents. So, I hope you enjoy and please don’t forget to subscribe and hit the bell, as it’s gonna really help me to make more video like this!!!

Hi Leo, thank you for this extensive comparison. The Ampero is a very tempting proposition. Hotone has done a great job. If it only had scenes/snapshots. That would make it very usable on stage. Personally I can live with the 44,1 kHz conversion rate of the Ampero, so that is no dealbreaker. BTW my compliments for your guitar playing. It is top notch!

Thank you Ronarl, both for sharing your opinion and for the compliments that really make me happy. I see your point, I think it could also depend on the type of use you want to do...for live use, the snapshot are great options, for just recording maybe you don't need snapshots but you want a better conversion rate Thank you once more!

Leo, you did it again-excellent review, helpful, and timely for me. The Ampero is clearly the one I want now, after studying these for several months. Recently I commented on your Mooer 250 review that I really prefer the white color. Not the most important feature, but the Ampero also looks great in white. I actually have a white limited edition Katana 50 MK II and even spray painted its grille to make it brighter-so it will be a good match. (I also spray painted my Boss EXP pedal gold). The bright colors impact my mood while playing. My two cents.

Great video! As listened in your as well in other reviews, the Boss to my ears sounds sometimes thin and dry, sometimes harsh, sometimes way too compressed. They still have to work very hard not only to make the use of this unit easier but also to achieve a better sound quality: it doesn't sound natural at all.

Subscribed - because you just saved me a lot of time Leo. After watching you play I now realise I don’t need any of these effects boxes after all, I can simply give up playing guitar. No seriously, it’s much better when the host has some lovely melodies to kick out, than just dry comparisons, plus it means we the viewers know you are able to try them out properly. Like a lot of music creators, I think, it’s a question of loving the brilliant clarity the digital era has brought, but knowing that it is that very ‘purity’ of the digital sound, that means analog still has a place and a sound of it’s own. I am usually in GarageBand on my iPad Pro2, and have a couple of tracks released, and I learned a lot doing that in the last 3 years, one major thing seems to be the addition of ‘noise’ or saturation, which seems almost the same thing, to final mixes. So if I had a question, it would be, is there any point in an effects unit for guitar, allowing the option of adding in such noise/saturation, at the playing/FX box stage? Patently, if you are doing a performance, it helps because you then do not have the mixing and mastering between you and the version the speakers emit, so there’s no ‘saturation’ stage. So I guess I am saying, if using such an FX unit as these, is there one that permits the option of adding in some white noise and/or saturation, to dirty the sound a bit, as you are playing in the first place? Thanks again. Stay safe keep well. [EDIT - PS it’s always a plus IMHO when the FX unit has an app goes with it - it may be easier to make changes offline as it were, on a computer or iPad etc, or just more interesting and convenient. Boss/Roland have their Boss-Tone setup online, I used that a little on my PC when I had the Boss GT-100 box. The GT-1000 unit has an actual app in the app store. On the other hand, it’s perfectly possible, people think this is entirely ‘so what’, and just want an old school standalone FX box. So, what do I know. But, that would be a plus when I get around to replacing my GT-100, which I just sold on Reverb.]

Hi, thank you so much, your subscription really means a lot to me. So far, I don't remember such a saturation effect available in this amp modelling pedalboards...I mean something like a tape saturator...you typically have to use a plugin in your digital audio workstation once the tracks have been recorded. Also in my opinion the computer app is pretty important! Thank you for your message!

Hi Leo! I think you’re getting better and better at doing the comparison tests 😊 I’m an HX Stomp user and think I was happier with that on the effects but the Ampero definitely won on the amps - not by enough to justify me swapping devices though. I would say that there’s a better plate reverb on the stomp, it’s called Double Tank and if you remove the modulation on it then it sounds amazing! The only one I was disappointed with was the Boss. Their amp simulations all seem to have excessive low end and a rumble you don’t get on the others. Once it all went in the mix however you couldn’t really tell. Keep up the good work!

Excellent comparison Leo! I must say that the Line 6 HX Stomp sounded great for such an old modeller and it makes me wonder that if they ever release an HX Stomp 2, it could be a big winner. But for now the Ampero seems to be slightly ahead. Although, I was very disappointed to see that Thomann has priced the unit at €499 euro and that makes me hesitant to buy one. I was led to believe that it would be €449. Hopefully, it's just an error on their website!

I am looking for my 1st unit like these 1s Seems like great timing on my part, because I want something fully featured that doesn't need hours of tweaking It's mostly a recording tool for me The new Ampero seems perfect... Think I will order mine in Friday Thank you for making this comparison so quickly mate Because I would have otherwise got the boss & I'm sure I would have been happy But maybe disappointed I didn't wait a week or 2 and got the Ampero 👊

Great video - if I had just one “criticism” it is that you should have either mixed the order up a bit, or played the clip of the real amp immediately before each modeller, so that your last auditory “memory” is of the real amp before hearing each of the modellers.

Hey Leo! I enjoy watching your reviews. First of all, you are a good musician. Your compositions sound great. And this helps to understand how good certain devices from the test are. In addition, you describe the parameters and features of the devices in some detail and remain concise enough. Of the three processors presented, I choose Hoton Ampero. It allows you to get the sound quite close to the reference amplifiers. Offers a fairly large selection of emulation amplifiers and pedals. And to set it up, it seems to be enough to be a musician, not an engineer or a sound engineer. It also has the lowest price. Creating complex playback chains, using digital samples of a large number of amplifiers and pedals complicates and increases the cost of the processor design. Including its setting. Most performers use in their practice one and a half to two dozen amplifiers that have become legendary thanks to the stars of world music. A few dozen more digital copies of the pedals will provide ample opportunities to sound like the idols of millions, or unique. More doesn't always mean better. In addition, the price often determines the choice. Good luck.

The 44.1khz is not an issue if you record through an external audio interface, it's basically going out analog signal into digital conversion. GT1000core is good, crystal clear, but pretty dry. Even with blend options, reverb and delays effects don't really stick well with the tone. It could be due to the algorithm, but this is a previous-gen issue. It shouldn't happen in current-gen gears. You are also right with GT1000core is more noisier than the rest, but weirdly the bigger GT1000 handles noise better than all these. I've feedback many times to BOSS, but they're unwilling to deal with the issue. Ampero still sounds the most natural, more so with the Celestion IRs. Downside is its effects. Take it for the fact that I've tried them all.

Amazing comparison. I haven't seen anything like this. I'm a jazz player so all I need is clean amp and decent speaker cab emulation, then some reverb and delay. Actually, I'm planning to use a separate pedel just for reverb. So I guess any of the three will work for me. Though the price between the three makes the comparison seems unfair. Should've included Headrush MX5, which is closer to Ampero II's price. I'm doing this in cases where I can't bring heavy tube amps and can only plugin straight.

The ring out tone of the vibrato at Min. 20:53 brings out all you may want to hear from an amp the wood scratch and the warms, the lively feeling of the playing. This I couldn’t hear in the neither of the three boxes. Beside that - doesn’t the Marshall looks majestic? I bought the HX Stomp referring to one of Leos latter reviews and I love it. The stomp box is for a part timer like me ideal for practicing, recording and just having fun with that huge variety of possibilities. One main feature for me that comes with the HX stomp is that it has bass amps aboard - so for my recording purposes I saved money on a real bass amp.

The GT-1000CORE has aux in: the effect loop returns can be configured to be used as such (though not as a separate input jack indeed). You forgot the mention the 'Assigns' menu as 'special feature', which is similar to snapshots but even more powerful and versatile IMHO. You can control every parameter of each setting of every patch with the footswitches or via MIDI. So except for the lack of balanced output, the GT-1000CORE would be most useful for live settings. Also note that when adjacent patches share the general layout of effect blocks, there is no audio gap. Delays can be carried over too.

@@spkay6317 I was mostly responding to Leo saying that the gt-1000core doesn't have aux in or other special features, which sounded a bit unfair in this comparison. About assigns vs snapshots: suppose 4 effects with each 2 parameter values you'd like to alternate between in a patch. To get all unique combinations you would need 16 snapshots, but only 4 assigns. It's not that one approach is per se better, they're quite similar - I happen to like the extra flexibility of assigns - but watching the video one might get the impression that the core can't do anything similar to snapshots.

This is great when you are on one patch that has a set volume, reverb, delay settings, and the ability to use the control switches to adjust the FX types, amps and cab settings depending on situation you are in. @Leo, thank you again for all the videos. I have finally decided to go with the Ampero II Stomp. I own one since a few weeks now and am pretty happy with it. As you explained already the missing 48khz is a bummer as this inhibits that I use the Ampero as a direct Interface for Rocksmith which requires 48khz (the HX Stomp can do it and there is also a report for RSAsio that it works). However I don't like the user interface of the HX Stomp at all. The Ampero II Stomp however is super intuitive and I love that the editor just looks and feels exactly the same as the great interface on the physical device. The lack of connectivity for my scenario on USB the Ampero makes up with it's phyiscal connectivity and the routing capabilities in the signal chain. I use the FX Send as input for the Rocksmith cable, the Aux In to feed in the games sound and both the headphone out and the line out for either playing through my headphones or into my full range speakers. So I have all the options and am not dependent on any routing and software on the PC for my scenario which makes it super easy to set up when I want to play. In addition I very much like the sound of the device. If you set up the global eq right in the beginning using the very first default patch to work well with your setup and speakers, you can use all the factory presets without change and they all sound great. I set up my first own patches by taking all the hi gain amps and routing them through the matching cab plus a TS-404 in front of them with the typical no gain tone to full and most of them sound very good right from the start. For some I changed the mic or the EQ a little bit to my liking but they all maintain a distinct character while being very usable right from the start. My favourite effect is the Stereo Modernizer. Using that behind a reverb sounds fantastic. You can distinguish your own playing over a backing track so much better without raising the volume which makes it a great tool for this scenario. The only thing I really miss is a good but simple pitch shifter. You can misuse the dual pitch modulator for this by turning one shifter to zero in the mix, but the sound is not as good as using "The Drop" in front of the Ampero, so I guess I will have to keep using the extra box for scenarios where I need to downtune and am to lazy to tune the guitar. Many thx again for all your hard work and I hope my comment helps other users to make the right choice.

Without a doubt, the best value for money is Ampero Stomp II. If the product had brought the scene mode, for the price, it would have killed HX Stomp. Honestly, the Boss product is very expensive for what it delivers! Today I'm playing with MG-30, Ampero Stomp II and POD HD500X and it's not easy to decide the definitive device. Even old, the HD500X never ceases to amaze and has the best connectivity... but it has lenght and weight (nothing is perfect. huauuaua). Congratulations for the very educational video, Leo!

@@LeoGibsonGtr You did a great job, I'm wondering how can be Ampero 2 compared with MG-30 which I own about sound , they are different "target" and different prices but could be interesting coz I think many people are wondering this to see if an upgrade it's worth

Ciao Leo, beautiful comparison and awesome playing as always :) I was just wondering whether Ampero has the same possibility that GE250 offers on audio outs; specifically with my GE250 I can go straight to PA with the XLR cable with CAB sim on and to the effects loop (send) of a tube amp placed usually on my back with the other sets of out ports excluding CAB sim on those. Basically I can have choice of switching CAB sim on or off on the two different outs. Is also the new Ampero offering this super useful possibility?

  • @LeoGibsonGtr

Hi Fabrizio, good point. The GE 250 has both unbalanced TS out and balanced XLR out in different "ports", where the Ampero has only two TRS outs. Therefore I would say that the feature you are talking about is not available in the Ampero. But I'm not 100% sure. Thank you for your question!

Hi Leo, very good and extensive comparison. Based on what I heard via studio monitors I would say Ampero is the closest sounding to the real amps. I am mostly interested in dynamic and volume test. I have a question, did you really change the volume pot on your quitar? My experince with modellers was quite dissapointing when I tested them last time. Hearing your test it sounds like there has been some improvements made.

Hi, thank you, I'm happy you like the video! In the dynamic management test I play really softly and then I start push and push in order to rise the volume and to push the amp unit it breaks up. Thank you for your message!

The best comparison video out there. As a bassist, I have been looking for something similar on these 3 units for bass. Leo, would it be possible to do one for bass effects that these units provide. Also, one effect the hx had that I wanted was the poly capo, is anything similar available in the Ampero?

Hi, thank you so much!!! I'm a bit reluctant in doing something similar as I'm not a bass player, and I don't have a real bass amp to which to compare these units...I will think about it.... As regards the poly capo....actually I don't know...I have to check out....if someone knows, please drop here a message! Thank you once more...your feedback is super important for me!!!

@@Creeper1010 wow!!! didn't know about that one. That too pushes the value of the hx stomp up. Along with the number of effects, blocks, cabs, amps - I think what kind of effects are actually offered and how they stack up to the effect units they emulate would make good comparison videos too. Although I am cognizant that it would make one hell of a long video probably.

Grazie!

I love the sound of Boss effects : chorus and delay are best than others. But is it the only positive note. If I had to choose, I will go with Ampero 2, the best all around.
