    This by far is my favorite pre amp. I've had one for about 3 years now, and haven't thought about swapping it out. Next thing for this one will definitely be some tube rolling.

    Enjoyed your video. I have the Ampapa connected to a Technics SL6 turntable. The two work well together and I love the LED lights. Great phono preamp at an affordable price.

    The tubes shown are used in the low level modulator driver stage in the VOA/MARTI GE SW 250kw transmitters . You DON’T need gloves at all to handle these tubes and others. Including the HUGE ceramic metal tubes used in the transmitters high level RF power amp and the 125kw audio amp modulator stage. I have handled all kinds of tubes without gloves for over 30yrs. Yes for the quartz halogen lamps you need the gloves. The oils of your skin break down the quartz.

    @@Recordology I do have a question if you don’t mind. I just connected my fluance rt-83, to my ampapa, and my ampapa to my receiver. I can’t get passed level 2 on the ampapa without the sound becoming distorted. The receiver is not up loud at all. Am I doing something wrong?

    @@OperativeRex This is a month later, so I hope you had it figured out by now. However, just to check. Are you plugging the Ampapa to your receiver via the "RCA Out" and not the headphone jack? If you plugged it in via the headphone jack, and then yes, it would distort if you turn the volume up too loud. If using the "RCA Out", then it should not distort when turning it up past "2". Either that or there may be something wrong with your unit.

    Nice unit and sounds really good (as I can tell through the video and these "PeeCee" speakers). Good explanation of how a phono pre-amp works and where it fits in a typical audio setup. Sometimes a reciever/integrated amp/pre-amp/processor may have a built-in phono pre-amp as my Marantz AV8802 does. Tempted to get one myself and see how it sounds compared to the built-in pre-amp on my Marantz, or the Pro-Ject "Phono-Box 2" pre-amp that I also have. Would be using my trusty ol' Technics SL-QL15 linear turntable.

    The intro reminds me of a movie theater that I used to go to. I think it was built in the late '40s or early '50s. The next walls had a pattern on them like the pattern on the intro. It smelled musty and a hint of perfume.

    It should be said here that most vintage amplifiers contain a pre-amp. I have used an external pre-amp in my life...

    What about the proper impedance matching you sometimes refer to with ceramic cartridges?

  • @Recordology

    @Recordology

    Either impedance matched or not - its outputting line level by design.

    Teensy bit of confusion here. It says "RCA OUT" rather than "LINE OUT", which said to me that it is actually a preamplifier output, implying that the volume and tone controls affect that output, so it can be connected to a power amplifier. If it is just a line output the volume and tone controls would only affect the headphone jack.

  • @SkiBumMSP

    @SkiBumMSP

    The volume and tone controls do affect the "RCA OUT" as well as the headphone jack (will need to try it with my B&W P9 Signature headphones). Do wish the Ampapa had a switch to allow by-passing the volume and tone controls and just output a line level signal on the "RCA OUT" and let me control the volume and tone via the volume and built-in equalizer on my pre/pro. But than again, for something I snagged for only about $130 (I got it on sale), I can't complain to much, as this actually is a very nice piece of kit for the price.
