Ammo Can Coffee Kit - A DIY Micro Camp Kitchen

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Inspired by Japanese Stanley lunchbox coffee kits -- but way cheaper -- my solution for having all I need to make coffee, while camping in my 4Runner, while taking up minimal space.
Also known by the more peaceful title The "Amo el Café" 💖☕
Stuff I used:
Harbor Freight .50 cal ammo can: www.harborfreight.com/metal-0...
Black flush-mount brackets - amzn.to/43gAqvV
Black molle pouch: amzn.to/3TtgNNX
BrüMate Rocks tumbler: amzn.to/49EmixX
The Stanley coffee container is actually a shotglass set: amzn.to/3T31yK0
Joulle kettle pot: amzn.to/3Itw631
Wooden dish temu.to/m/uz4zgxjuza0
Disposable pourover coffee filters temu.to/m/u65dw08on62
Primula Brew Buddy coffee filter amzn.to/48QNJUS
FireMaple Antarcti 1.2L Stainless Steel Pot firemaplegear.com/collections...
Alcohol stove amzn.to/3PhVOez
Denatured alcohol fuel: amzn.to/3PhVOez
Picnictime folding floor chair: amzn.to/3Tho7el
Most everything else from Amazon: www.amazon.com/shop/shoestrin...
Stuff I didn't use:
Stanley classic lunch box amzn.to/3Vjf9zM

I like all of these. Those Korean/Japanese campers always leave me searching online for the cool stuff they have! And no you're not done! Where's your hiking kitchen? Tea or coffee with a snack or two on the trail or lunch! Heat water over your alcohol stove, maybe a tiny iCamp fold up table, small pot, you know the drill.

I love it! You're ingenuity to MAKE something similar to what you've seen is amazing. I can really appreciate that. Dont get me wrong, I like watching those compact, fancy camping set ups too. But some of the equipment prices are 😳 obscene. I think what I like even more is watching you MAKE something similar, within some of our realistic camping budgets, but equally as functional and eye catching. Inspiring! Thanks for sharing! ✌🏽

I still like the Stanley Lunch box idea. Because of how I've seen some one set the stove inside the lunch box and use a grate over the stove. So its very stable and out of the wind.

I have seen this as well, so of course I have to sort of dry-fit it into the ammo can, using my little grate. My butane stove is too big, but the alcohol stove fits, or those little backpacking stoves, if you're into that sort of thing. 😏

I love watching the things coming out of japan and korea, they are really taking esthetic glamping to some new levels. Some of it is very frivolous, but their areas to explore via car are much more limited and tame than ours in the US (and yes, I lived in both Japan and Korea for about 4 years each).

Years ago, I made a mini chuck box out of a plywood owl's nest box that I saw at a feed store; 10x12x12 inches. After some tinkering on it to hold a 1lb propane bottle with a backpacker's stove, it has been a great kitchen to cook on inside my suv camper. It's also a nice little bedside table in my rig, since it sits next to my mattress on the floor. For small rig living or camping, I can't recommend these little camp boxes enough, I use mine every day.

I love how you keep coming up with new and creative ways to improve how you camp, especially doing camp coffee! My three sons and I (and there’s always friends along too) head into the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota every summer for a week. The two older ones each have their own coffee roasters at home, so camp coffee is always made from their fresh roasted beans, ground with a Porlex stainless steel hand grinder and brewed in an Aeropress. We use a .9 liter camping kettle. Nothing better than fresh coffee in the wilderness.

I'm obsessed with #coffeeoutside too! A note about the alcohol stoves- my go to heating style for water. You want the top of the stove to be between 1.25- 1.5 inches from the bottom of the pot. You get the most BTU out of them with that distance. I found that many of the pot stands from aliexpress/amazon are around 1 inch. I know it sounds stupid but that 1/4 inch makes a difference. I started using the zencamps (Amazon) stainless steel pot stand with a cheapie titanium windscreen and it works great. The zencamps pot stand has different slots to hold a variety of stoves at a variety of heights. It's also got a cup for solid fuel tabs. I only ever use heet from the yellow bottle for my stove. There are a lot of resources here on youtube on modifying the cheap stoves to work better- like drilling out the jets for better fuel efficiency and angling them. Your channel popped up randomly for me about a year ago and it has inspired me to build my own car camping set up and get my wife outside for coffee and hiking.

  • @ShoestringMartha

Great tips, thank you! I'm going to look for that stand. In the meantime. I might try and stack the other one I have (that's two pieces) atop the crown-shaped one -- depending on total height and tippiness. 🤔 Enjoy your outdoors time together! ☕⛰️

Whilst I love the idea of using an ammo box (the Stanley lunch pail is almost £100 here in the UK) this seems a lot of unnecessary messing around.

In retrospect, would you still prefer your 4Runner over a Toyota Sienna with an additional 3.5" lift kit and AWD for your travels? The Sienna would give you more internal volume. Thoughts? Thanks.

Oh he barks!! Just less so when we’re camping, because there is less stimulus. He will bark if someone enters our site, which is fine with me. If people are walking by, he wants to bark at them, but I correct him, and he prettttty much listens. It’s just more motivation to find remote locations 😂
