Amex Gold vs Chase Sapphire Preferred 2021

In this video, we are looking at the Amex Gold Card vs the Chase Sapphire Preferred and how these 2 popular annual fee travel credit cards compare against each other in terms of benefits, points categories, and features. The Amex Gold Card and Chase Sapphire Preferred are both amazing credit cards that I think are 2 of the best credit cards of 2021 and a lot of people will agree that these both can be the best travel credit card, depending on what you’re looking for. Here, I do a quick Amex Gold card review and a quick Chase Sapphire Preferred card review to go over everything that you need to know before I give my opinion on what credit card is best for you.
If you are wondering, “is the Amex Gold card or Chase Sapphire Preferred worth it in 2021”, then this video will be very helpful and informational in your decision about whether to apply for one or both of these credit cards. The Amex Gold card is a great credit card if you know that you are going to be able to use these $120 Uber credit and $120 dining credit or if you travel at least a couple of times a year and don’t mind transferring your American Express Membership Rewards Points to a travel partner to get more value. The Chase Sapphire Preferred is a great credit card if you are looking for a lower annual fee and want more flexibility in the different ways that you can redeem your Chase Ultimate Rewards Points.
I have both of these credit cards, so I actually think that many people will enjoy having both the Amex Gold and CSP as well, especially if you combine the CSP with the no annual fee Chase credit cards, the Freedom Flex and Freedom Unlimited, in a Chase Trifecta credit card setup.
Let me know what you think about these 2 credit cards and if you have one or both of them down in the comment section below! Do you like one credit card more than the other?

    Credit cards that require you to drastically change your spending habits are of little value to me. The AMEX Gold might be worth a look if the Uber eats and dining credits rolled over, but I don't normally spend at those locations on a monthly basis. Great video as always.

    Hey buddy. I agree - these are two of the better cards out there. I have the Gold and the CSR, so essentially what you described. Since I haven’t traveled much in the last two years, I’ve used the Gold card to build MR points, then cashed them out using the Schwab Platinum. I got the old conversion rate of 1.25 cents per point. Another advantage to the CSP is that there are still a decent number of places that don’t accept Amex. I’ve run into that issue three times in the last month, so I’ve had to reach for a Visa or MC. Thanks for another well done video.

    Hey Anthony, thanks so much for the comment! Glad you enjoyed the comparison video! Yeah I wish I could get into more detail here about those other MR point redemption values like that with the Schwab card. That 1.1 CPP option is still nice in my opinion but really wish I could have gotten the card with 1.25 CPP cash out like you did! Also good to note that some places don't take Amex. I don't think I've really run into an issue with the recently but interesting that its happened to you a few times recently!

From your videos, it seems like I should. Curious what you use your CSP card verus your Amex Gold? Is it simply that you use the Amex Gold for ALL Restaurant and Grocery purchases and then you use the CSP for Travel + everything else? Just curious what your breakdown is as I'd like to keep both and make sure I am using them properly. Thanks!

    I have both cards and I found that the Chase travel portal to be much better than AMEX. I find it can be a lot of work to use transfer partners can be difficult especially if you are booking for more than one person. Amex gold is good if you are single and want to fly business class if you can find a good flight. Overall the CSR is a better value.

Plus, I like if I were to get the Amex gold card, I can transfer to Marriott hotels. So far, chase doest really benefit from groceries. Only if it hits that 5% bonus category from the flex card. I felt like the gold card can fit in nicely.

  • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah I would recommend that Chase ecosystem over the Amex ecosystem first to most people, just because there is a Chase 5/24 rule that I've mentioned before in other videos and because the Chase points are easier to redeem for good value. And from what I know, I believe Experian is the most common for Chase to use, but they use Equifax and Transunion sometimes too so it varies

  • @sjg6158

    While I haven't done a ton of this yet, the Chase Travel Partners (and additional value if you have a Freedom Card) is maybe what tips the scale to the Sapphire Card. Transferring to Hyatt or other airlines to really draw out the value / point is where you really make this card excellent.

  • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Cameron, it definitely can be a good option since you can transfer those MR points to Delta at 1:1 ratio. The only thing is that you probably won't get the highest value for these points compared to if you transferred for things like international flights with some of the other Amex transfer partners. Definitely not a bad thing though and you could still get a little over 1 Cent per point by transferring to Delta which I would be ok with getting sometimes. So yeah, not as much high value potential with Delta, but all depends on the type of travel that you do and it can still be worth it

    How do you maximize benefits and balance the point-earning between different card issuers? For example, if I have Chase and Amex cards, how do I determine what to spend on which cards because using Amex cards will create the opportunity cost of Chase points and vice versa. Appreciate your input!

  • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question Sharina! For me, I value Chase and Amex points equally because there are a lot of great ways to get pretty similar value from both! so I just simply go with whatever one of my Chase or Amex cards will earn points at a higher rate for each purchase. So I use my Amex Gold for dining at 4x points which beats the Chase cards' 3x points. But right now I use my Chase Freedom Flex for Groceries because it gets me 5x points per dollar for the next year as part of my welcome bonus which is higher than the 4x points earned by my Amex Gold. Plus, on top of all that, if I ever get a new card that has a minimum spend requirement for a welcome bonus, then I will use that card for everything because the return will be higher. For example, if I somehow opened a new Sapphire Preferred card today, the welcome bonus is for 60,000 points after $4,000 of spending. That "return on spend" works out to be 15x points per dollar spent on that minimum spend requirement, so 15x points on everything until I get that bonus beats out all of my other cards that I have. Hopefully that makes sense and helps but that's the basics of how I look at it!

    Good question, from what I know, it'll probably be difficult to pool between both Amex points and Chase points to Delta. You can transfer Amex MR points directly to Delta but like you saw, Delta is not a transfer partner with Chase. There are still ways to transfer Chase UR points to airlines that partner with Delta like Virgin, I believe, but it probaly won't work that you can pool all of your points directly to Delta

    For me, personally, I saw more value in the AmEx Green card… definitely a budget version that complements to the AmEx BCP, but since AmEx Gold Uber credits don’t roll over it’s kind of tough to justify since I’d need to adjust my spending habits to accommodate the perk (personal opinion - changing your spending habits to accommodate cards means the card is not right for you). Preferred card is nice, but card ecosystem wasn’t there for me… AmEx Gold used to be a budget friendly version of the Reserve when the $100 airfare credit existed, but once that went away the allure kind of died for me… it feels like an overly expensive AmEx Green, overly expensive Preferred, or an underpowered Reserve. I feel like less folk will get the AmEx Gold in 2022 and hopefully it gets a better boost or the signup bonuses continue to get better

    I actually have both the Amex Gold and the CSP. I just got the CSP and hit the minimum spend and received the 100,000 points. But I struggle to keep the Amex Gold as the Amex Hilton Honors card gives you 5x on groceries and 5x on gas stations. With zero annual fee. But you have to be loyal to the Hilton portfolio. The nice thing with the gold is that sometimes Amex has promotions if you transfer it to one of their partners and gives you extra percentage of points. What are your thoughts? Decisions lol. • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey William! Interesting, I'm not sure how the work reimbursement works in your situation but that's too bad because like you said, the statement credit redemption rate is very low compared to other options like redeeming for travel. If you want to get into the Chase system, then I would just continue using credit cards the right way for the next few months to build up your credit history. In the meantime, also try to see if you could open up a bank account with Chase to get in as a customer of theirs. Then in a few months, you might be able to apply for one of their Freedom cards as long as your credit score is high enough along with other factors that they consider. Unfortunately, it takes some time (but not too long) to get started with building up your credit as an immigrant. Hopefully some of the other videos on my channel can help! Feel free to ask any questions and I'd be happy to answer what I can 👍

  • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    @@williamw8546 Ok gotcha makes sense! So closing a card will all just depend on your own personal factors as to whether or not it will hurt you score. Since you are a new immigrant, then your credit history is probably not too long. So closing any cards would likely hurt your score based on what you said. But I would do some research to look into the different factors that go into a credit score and look at some no annual fee credit cards as well since they are very useful by keeping open to increase age of credit. It'll take a several months of consistent on time payment history and low credit utilization to help as well. There's some other videos on my channel that may be useful to you but I hope that helps!

    No comparison needed. Chase has amex beat in every category. $250 is a waste for coupons I would never use. Just got CSP card and got the hotel credit, saved well over $45 in rental car insurance. Pretty much got paid to have that card. Getting a penny per point beats point 6 cents if I wanted. Chase has the transfer partners I use. Comparing CSP to CSR would be a better comparison than amex to Chase card. At least 3X on restaurants beats 2.4X amex wants to give you. 100k points valued at least $1,000 to $1,250 unlike amex point system. Chase has better cards all around.

    I agree with a lot of those points! Amex is not good for redeeming for cash back because of that 0.6 cents per point value. For Amex, the only way to make it worth it is to either have something like the Schwab platinum to redeem points at 1.1 cents per point into that brokerage account or to transfer the points to a travel partner. That's why I like Chase better for most people because theres so many great ways to get guaranteed good value for those points! So, to get the $120 Ruth's Chris credit, you'd have to spend on 12 visits far beyond what your tip would be for any of those visits. Hmm....I suppose you could just go in for a salad, but why go there unless you are down for a filet at the low end or Tomahawk at the upper? Seems clickbait.

    Yeah I personally think that’s the worst one included on that dining credit list. I doubt many people are going there every month just because of the credit but I guess it’s good to have if you’re there for some reason. Not a very good use of that credit for me though haha
